Where My Feet Have Been

Consider this my version of Chuck Taylor Tuesday. A little peek at what I’ve been up to so far this weekend during my great escape from the hospital.

Breaking free from the IV pole has given me a lot more mobility.

I’m not allowed to do anything strenuous because of those pesky blood clots and cancer around my beating heart. And trust me, after another month with cancer, being home allows me to see just how my health has deteriorated. But that hasn’t stopped me from moving around a little and soaking in the fresh air.

So no 4-mile jogs or trips to the gym (ha!). But a short and gentle stroll with the poodle is more than welcome.

Afternoon visits to Nana’s include tea, digestive cookies, and a quick catnap.

First thing I did when I woke up on Saturday? Make pancakes!

I was scared that I’d be addicted to sleeping pills after almost a month of taking them. But it only took me an extra 45 minutes or so to quiet down my brain enough to fall asleep. I slept in a little and immediately took to the kitchen to make apple buckwheat pancakes with a bit of Vega vanilla protein powder added.

Lunch was the best one I’ve had since being admitted to hospital – homemade pasta from a family friend. With spinach, shrimp, feta, tomatoes and olives.

Dinner of course happened at one of my favourite restaurants in the world – Calactus! With my dad:

I opted against my favourite veggie burger in favour of the Club Flute and some raspberry green iced tea.

Oven baked wrap on handmade chapati bread with veggie pate, mushrooms, tomato, carrots, spinach and their crazy delicious tofu cream sauce.

Archie, my mom’s poodle, doesn’t leave my side when I’m at my mom’s. He either really missed me, or knows something is up. Probably both.

As fantastic as being home has been so far, it’s been really, really strange. But I’ll share more on that later. For now, I have a Sunday to enjoy. I’ve got 24 hours left of freedom.

  7. Oh Susan, how I can relate. Not for me, but for my Dad- it was always so sweet when we got short respites from the hospital and things were a little bit normal. I think I told you about that drive that we took up one of the keys in Florida- it was so memorable as we (he) hadn’t had a taste of freedom in weeks. Colors were that much brighter, everything crisper and life just felt so precious that every minute was meant to be cherished that much more.

I’m interested to hear how you feel that things are ‘strange’…I’m sure it will be very interesting for us to learn about that.

Animals TOTALLY can sense when something is wrong- TOTALLY. Whether it’s wrong with your body or if you are sad- they totally pick up on it and they are there for you no matter what. That is probably why I love animals as I do- they are totally giving and nonjudgemental- they love unconditionally and especially when you need it the most.

By the way, you look radiant and stunning and gorgeous and healthy- so any cancer you may temporarily have has certainly not taken its toll on you physically at ALLLLLL.

    Love you!!

  8. Looks like you are having a great time! Enjoy your Sunday!

  23. You know I read a story once about how animals can identify humans who are suffering from cancer and the like, there’s supposedly a smell that they can detect?! It’s kinda interesting!

Looks like you’re enjoying the freedom!! :)

  27. Just catching up on your weekend dear – congratulations on getting away!!! It must feel wonderful to just be “out” for a while. And rocking the chucks instead of your cute blue socks ; )

At least when you must go back you know where to find the flat screen and the shortcake!

  28. So glad you’re back home!! Breakfast, lunch, and dinner all looked so delicious, I’m happy you were able to ditch the hospital food for such tasty looking meals

  29. Sounds like a great weekend!

It’s Monday already here in the UK so just wanted to wish you all the best for your first round of chemo xxx

  30. Seriously so glad you got to break free for a bit! Made my day when I saw that on twitter. Poodle time and some good food seems perfect. Seriously I love poodles.

  31. Glad you were able to enjoy the fresh air and get some real food :)

  32. I’m so glad that you got to get out of the hospital for a bit.
My mom has colon cancer and we talk all the time about how their dog Molly can sense that something is wrong. My mom is actually able to complete part of her chemotherapy at home every other week when she gets it but while she is home with the chemo Molly will not leave her side. Not even to go potty. When my mom gets up in the middle of the night to go to the bathroom or to get a drink Molly wakes up my dad and wines and cries until my mom comes back. Once I unhook my mom at the end of the weekend, Molly will slowly start to leave my mom’s side little by little over a few hours but she knows something is going on and really keeps an eye on my mom. Animals are wonderful in that sense. They are so protective and intuitive.
