191 Days.
For 24 years I always lived in my home province of New Brunswick. Population: 730,000.
I grew up in a town of 16,000 people.
In high school I moved to a city of 100,000.
At 18 years of age, I moved to a city of 60,000. It was a mere 160km away, or a 90 minute drive.
Six months ago I moved to Toronto, 1200km away and home to 5.5 million.
It’s been 191 days since I was last home to my small Atlantic province. The longest I’ve gone in all my 24 years.
After 6 months away in a bustling urban centre, I thought my small home city would seem too dull. Too small. Too ugly.
But you know what? It’s still home.
It’s where my mom’s raunchy sense of humour is.
My favourite furry poodle and wet poodle nose (who still busts through my door at 7am every morning).
It’s where you fall into conversations with people walking their dogs along trails.
Where you can go anywhere and see a familiar face.
A place where you don’t have to fight your way through the sidewalks, but go at your own pace.
Where baristas take your order without a snooty face.
Where bacon is always fully stocked in my mother’s fridge. Perfect for maple bacon oatmeal with fried eggs.
Along with the expensive ezekiel bread I love but can’t afford.
Home is where even after torturously bathing and clipping my dog, he’s still ready to be my best friend a mere 15 minutes after being dried.
It’s where the haddock is fresh and flavourful.
And lobster rolls are a weeknight dinner.
My friends and co-workers in Toronto keep asking me if I’m actually going back after Christmas because I miss my hometown in the Maritimes so much.
The answer is yes, I’ll reluctantly return. But I’m now officially back to plotting operation Grand Theft Poodle.

what a lovely post. i haven’t been back to my little hometown in like 3 years! no one in my family lives there anymore so it’s hard to find an excuse to go back. but this post made me nostalgic and now i’m thinking about taking the trek out there! :) enjoy your time at home!
I totally feel the same about my hometown! And Mmmm on the lobster roll, I miss the fresh lobster/sea food from my east coast trip this summer.
It looks like you are having a great time at home! Tea with Grandma too!
I live 200 or so miles from my hometown (Seattle) so it’s not THAT far to travel but I definitely don’t go home enough.
Ohgosh, I wish I’d taken pictures of that, my Nana’s “high tea” is the bestest!
Aw, I love this post! And the pup!
It looks absolutely beautiful. :) I am back in my hometown, but I do love getting out and about, seeing the world. It makes me appreciate where I came from so much more.
My parents have a Cockapoo, looks very similar to Archie. :)
super sweet and tender post, susan!
i am happy for you that you’re returning but i know how much you HAVE loved toronto, the past 6 mos feels like you’ve moved and been a moving target and i have witnessed you grow and make your life even more amazing than it was…and it’s beeen awesome to see.
but glad you’re going home if you miss it so.
On lighter matters, THANKS for the camera help and advice. I am ordering something…tonite i think, amazon, look out :)
I HEAR you sister! I really love Philadelphia, but NOTHING beats home! I get to be home for a full 7 days and I am practically jumping out of my skin to get there
You should be a toronto tour guide! This post made me want to move in with you! I used to hate my hometown (LA) but when I went to Santa Barbara for college, I really missed it. There really is not place like home sometimes.
It sounds like you were over-due for a visit home!
:)
Enjoy your time with your familia! And if you do kidnap the puppers let me know. ‘Cause I’d love to meet that lovely poodle!
I feel the same way every time I visit my parents. I am totally a small-town girl at heart!
Take me with you.
The end.
There is something special about home, huh?
And I love the new look!
I think I will always feel attached to where I grew up. My parents moved to my current town when I was 12 but I still feel truely at home in Arlington, Va. Kind of the opposite for me though…we moved to a dull, boring, small town. lol
Poodle in the tub! Priceless! I love it! :)
Wow, your hometown seems really lovely.
Btw I really like your blog, it’s fun to read & kinda useful at the same time:) Kisses from Poland
Have a great time at home :)
Jen
It’s always so nice to be home. Enjoy every minute girl!
oh this is beautiful
Bahah love the pillow- your mom has a wicked sense of humor!
The poodle = love.
I used to get terribly home sick when I was in grad school in San Francisco. So much that when I took the quick 50 minute flight from SFO to LAX I would get terrible anxiety as I desperately did not want to die on the way home. I just wanted to get home to be with my Mom and my dogs. But funny enough on the way back to SF after a wonderful visit with the family, I had no anxiety on the plane. Didn’t care if I died. I could die happy as I just had my dose of family and love. :-)
I’m sure that you are having a WONDERFUL Christmas holiday with them at home <3 Enjoy and stay warm!
