The World’s Best Veggie Burger. Ever.

Hello everyone! I don’t know what it’s like where you are, but the Maritimes are getting pushed around by a nasty storm today. Rain, strong winds, overall ickyness. Fret not, I spent most of this Tuesday in my pyjamas watching Dexter. Followed by an amaaaazing hot yoga class with the bestie (more on this new hot yoga later).

But I’m not here to talk about Tuesday because you’ll probably be reading this on Wednesday, or Thursday. Or maybe next January. So let’s just get to Monday, shall we?

Monday is a day worth blogging about. On Monday, I ate the best veggie burger in the whole wide world.

Well, in my humble opinion anyways.

Remember when I rambled on about my favourite hamburgers? Well I’ve got a top veggie burger list too. And as hard as Toronto tries, it still can’t trump the ones being served up at Moncton’s own Calactus.

Unlike Toronto, Vegetarian/Vegan restaurants are hard to come by in these parts. For a long time, it was the only place in Moncton that offered a wide range of veggie options. Which was important to me in my vegetarian days.

Back in high school, Calactus operated out of a little colourful home on Mountain Road. Since then, it’s classed up with a larger home on the corner of Church and St. George.

They were also one of the first restaurants in Moncton to serve up fresh, organic, local food. Back before hummus became a mainstay at the local pub.

I’ve tried almost everything on this menu by now. The flutes are fabulous, the pizzas delicious and the burritos hit the spot. But the one item I order again and again is the Big Marc Burger. This has been the subject of dreams for over a decade now.

Our famous all-dressed veggie burger with cheese. Served with oven-baked potatoes and Caesar salad.”

I arrived here after a noon-hour spin class with my dad. The old man out-spun me, again ;) First things out of his mouth after class were “Chocolate soy shake.” Mine were “Big Marc Burger.”

Pops, ready to dig in.

Me, with an old friend.

Word on the street is that Marc, the burger’s inventor, used to sell these puppies while living in Europe. He then came home to Moncton to open his own restaurant and these became the star of the menu.

As far as I can tell, it’s a patty very reminiscent of veggie pate. Topped with their signature tofu cream sauce, mustard, sprouts, lettuce, tomato, red onion, and cheese melted into crisps.

I opted out of the potatoes and got all salad. I love this caesar salad. Topped with that tofu cream dressing and these little vegetarian bits that taste just like bacon bits. Textured vegetable protein or nutritional yeast perhaps?

In case you are wondering here are the runners up for “Susan’s Top Veggie Burgers”:

2. Q.M. Burger from Queen Mother Cafe

A high protein vegetarian patty of grains, nuts, herbs and mushrooms, covered in melted cheese and served in a whole wheat pita with our own special sauce, romaine lettuce and tomato.

3. Deluxe Burger from Fresh

“Our high protein almond, grain, tofu & vegetable burger is grilled and served with a side of slaw.” Toppings are tomato, lettuce, red onion, alfalfa sprouts dill pickle & vegan mayo.

So you see, yes, I will never compare a veggie burger to a real hamburger again. But that doesn’t mean I still don’t appreciate a kick ass veggie patty ;)

Question of the Day: What’s the best veggie burger you ever had?

Posted on December 21, 2010, in Restaurants, Reviews and tagged , , . Bookmark the permalink. 24 Comments.

  1. Best veggie burger…hmmm, being that I never liked meat and stopped eating red meat by about age 7, I never even like veggie burgers that much. I am the only veg/vegan who isnt obsessed w/ making black bean and/or tofu burgers. I’d rather have chocolate. haha! I will admit that about 10 yrs ago, i used to adore morningstar burgers with tons of ketchup after drinking. All that sodium. Delish :)

    I ordered the cam!!

  2. Hmmm. You know, I don’t think I have had a truly out-of-this-world, blow-my-mind veggie burger, ever! I’d love to find one, though. I’ll let you know if I find a San Francisco gem!

  3. I’m not sure that they’re the best but I used to be a HUGE fan of the veggie burgers at Lick’s! It’s been years (!!!) since I’ve had them but I swear they tasted like meat, only better! :)

  4. Ha! Love the digging in pic! :)
    Sadly I haven’t had any award-winning veggie burgers lately. Chili’s isn’t bad… haha

  5. I’ll add this to my long list of vegetarian friendly restaurants worldwide… I never know where my next trip might take me (and it’s never easy being a veg-traveler)! Has anyone ever told you that you look like a young Diane Neal? Maybe I just watch too much Law & Order ;)

  6. BGR in dc has a pretty godd veggie burger. Not sure if they are a local chain or a national one

  7. Christina @ Food.Fitness.Fun.

Looks delish!! The best veggie burger I’ve had was at Aux Vivres in Montreal, I’ll have to try the one at Calactus if I’m ever back there again.

  8. I’m not sure who I would give the award to for best veggie burger ever, but I had the most amazing Portebello and avocado burger the other day! It was pure heaven!

  9. i’m always on the quest for the best veggie burger. i dunno what “the best” is – but it usually has texture and cheese!

  10. God I love veggie burgers! The fact that I would always choose a veggie burger over a beef burger kinda conveinced me that going veggie was right for me! I love Angela @ohsheglows In a Jiffy Spelt burgers in a pitta with hummus, I’m drooling right now!

  11. I feel silly saying it but Chili’s black bean burger with cheddar cheese was probably the best veggie burger I’ve ever had. Then again I’ve not had many!

  12. So nice to see a pic of your dad! Being an omnivore, I dont often choose veggie burgers when there are delicious meat versions (vegans, go judge me, i dare you). I know most people hate them, but I like those Boca Burgers. But when I’m craving a burger, I’m craving a real one.

  13. This was a favorite of mine, from White Water Cooks.
    Merry Christmas Susan!

  14. The Big Marc burger looks incredible!! I love me a good veggie burger…they can be hard to come by, though.

My personal favourite so far is the tempeh burger from Aux Vivres, a vegan restaurant in Quebec. Also the lentil-cashew burger at the Jane Bond (in Waterloo) is quite nice.

  15. The best one I had was at Word of Mouth Cafe outside of Salem, Oregon. They made them in house, and it was unbelievable. You could see every veggie ingredient in the burger, and it was huge! *drool*

  16. Well, I do love my burgers. As long as it’s not “fake meat” but made with real veggies that taste like veggies, I’m down for veggie burgers too!

The best veggie burger shall be the burger I’m planning to make as soon as this stupid rain is over so that I can take a pretty picture of it. lol.

  17. WOW. This looks amazing! I need to make it out to the East coast… :D

  18. hahaha i love your chomping photo! so cute. and i haven’t clicked out to read your blog in a bit–I LOVE the new look! geez i should really comment more often, eh?
