Eleventy Eleven

Tamzin has tagged me to 1) provide 11 things about myself and 2) answer 11 questions she made up for me. I don’t usually do these things (even though I love reading facts about other people) but I figured it might be fun since I’ve gotten a lot of new readers over the course of my cancer treatment. I’m not all about cancer all the time!

11 Things

1. I collect elephant figurines. I’ve got dozens of elephant trinkets from all around the world.

2. I know how to Highland dance. My older sisters were more competitive with it but I still remember the basic steps. I remember using metre sticks to practice the sword dance and wearing rubber bands at the top of my knee socks to prevent them from falling down while I jumped up and down.

3. I love the smell of second hand smoke. I smoked for six years and quit purely for health and vanity reasons. I never turned into one of those ex-smokers who wrinkle their nose at how “gross” it is. That’s why I haven’t touched a cigarette since I quit, because I could probably easily become a smoker again.

4. The first dog I ever owned was named Prudence. I believe she was a shephard/beagle mix. She died near Parlee Beach after choking on a shell.

5. I didn’t get my license until I was 22. I failed my beginners written exam when I was 16 and never bothered with it again until my boyfriend in university insisted that he teach me.

My first car - a 1993 Dodge Shadow. Bought in 2008.

6. Speaking of cars, I dream of owning a Vespa someday.

7. The only reason why I learned how to play harmonica was so I could play this song:

8. The first recipe I ever tried was stuffed tomatoes from Jamie Oliver’s old show The Naked Chef. I was 13. I turned out awful.

9. Even though I’m not sure if I’ll even ever have children, I love picking out names for these fictional children of mine. Right now my favourite girl’s name in Rosalie while my current boy’s name is Simon.

10. I really dislike horror movies. I claim it’s because they typically have bad plots, but it’s mostly because I don’t like being scared. Although, I do kind of love Evil Dead.

11. I spend a lot of time going between really wanting a tattoo, and wanting to keep my body tattoo-free. Currently, I am in a wanting a tattoo phase. The main thing that keeps me from ultimately getting one is that I’m cheap.

11 Questions

1. What is your favorite Pop song?

I don’t listen to a lot of pop, how about some Britpop?

2. What is your first ever memory?

Bothering my sisters while they were playing a board game in the basement. I was 2 or 3 years old and they were yelling at me to go away because I was knocking around the pieces.

3. What food are you most addicted to?

Peanut butter. It was the only restricted food I had while on chemo that I just couldn’t 100% give up. Chocolate and cheese were easier to resist!

4. The best place you have visited?

Banff, Alberta. I feel like I should say one of the cool European places I’ve been to, but Banff is beautiful without all the manmade stuff. I’m not much of a city person and when it comes to the great outdoors, Banff is wonderful.

5. The book you’re currently reading?

I haven’t read a book since… October? I usually read a book every couple weeks, but I have a hard time concentrating on and retaining information these days thanks to chemo brain.

6. A life goal you have yet to achieve?

Make homemade croissants.

7. Smoothie or Juice?

8. Favorite App?

Instagram!! I’m balancesusan on there.

9. What did you want to be when you were little?

Veterinarian. I’ve always loved animals.

10. Top ten fruit and veg?

Apples, oranges, grapes, spinach, carrots, tomatoes, blueberries, artichoke hearts, potatoes, mangoes.

11. Favorite way to drink coffee?

Black and strong. There is a joke about men in there somewhere.

  1. The first “recipe” I ever tried was a James Barber/Urban Peasant recipe. It was a dessert that was supposed to look like a fried egg: half a canned peach on a scoop of whipped cream. It worked…but I’m not sure I really could have messed that one up (maybe by over-whipping the cream and ending up with butter?) even at 10 or 11 years old.
Speaking of James Barber- I watched a re-run a few years ago and found myself cringing and being genuinely worried for him the entire time he was using a knife! I’m not sure how half his shows didn’t end in injury.

I love Banff too- other than my family, the thing I miss most about Alberta is the mountains.

    • That’s the great thing about old-school cooking shows – they weren’t the production they are today. Julia child was partially infamous for screwing up (and nicking herself) on her show!

  2. I quit smoking two years ago and I still love the smell. (I quit for my husband.) It’s hard for me to be around smokers because I still get “cravings”. I smell my brother’s cigs (he socially smokes) all the time.

You should definitely get a tattoo. People always told me to think about it or a couple years once I decided what I wanted to get, but I ended up spontaneously getting a tattoo that I thought about for approx. two days. I LOVE it.

  3. My BFF collects elephants and I am wearing my elephant necklace today!

How terrible about your first doggy! So sad! :(

I remember learning to cook as a kid! I used to make recipes out of my mom’s ancient Better Homes and Gardens cookbook. Everything called for oleo which totally confused me! lol

  4. Collecting elephants and loving second hand smoke! A girl after my own heart!!

  5. I’m with you on the baby names. I’m not sure I even want kids, but I have a list in my iphone where I stockpile names just in case.

I’m also in the same boat re: a tattoo. I designed a tattoo for myself when I was 18 and never got it done. Since then I bretty much bounce between loving tattoos and wanting one badly, and thinking there’s something really pristine about a “clean” body.

  6. I failed my first drivers test also! Didn’t get my license until I was 18 and got a ticket for driving without one. The cop told me that they would drop the charges if I got my license before I went to court. If that never happened I may have never got my license!

When I used to waitress, I heard just about every insinuating comment about coffee “I like mine like I like my women…sweet and creamy” etc. ha-ha, who would have thought coffee was so much like men/women?

  7. I wanted to be a vet when I was little too! And peanut butter would be EXTREMELY difficult for me to give up too!! (love the black and strong comment…that’s what she said?!)

  8. Now I can’t stop trying to figure out what my first memory is! I’m pretty sure it’s watching The Cosby Show with my family. Or even if that’s not technically my first, it should be. :) And also, Guess Who is SUCH a good game! (and I do the same thing with kid’s names!)

  9. The one thing that sucked about Guess Who was its sexism… there were only 5 women so if you got one you were screwed! :(

I got my first (and only so far) tattoo senior year of college after wanting one for about 2 years… I wish I’d gotten mine a bit sooner, but I do think it’s wise to make sure it’s definitely what you want. If you ever get one, please share!

  10. Banff National Park is probably my favourite place in the world too!! Normally I love urban environments but the natural beauty of the mountains, lakes, and trees can’t be beat.

That’s awesome that you know how to highland dance! One of my roommates studied it for years and I loved watching her dance. It looked like an intense workout!

  11. I loved reading this :) I don’t like the smell of secondhand smoke, but when I smell it I still get that itch to have a cigarette, even so many years after quitting. It’s so weird!

  12. Good Britpop choice although I now feel terribly old after looking up how long it’s been since that song was released!

  13. I’ve been obsessed with going to Banff after watching it on the Bachelorette when Jillian went there. Sad to admit that’s what first drew me to the beauty of Banff but now I want to go.

  14. I <3 Banff, we go every May Long!
Also , just recently became obsessed with Instagram. Am now following you.

  15. I loved your 11 facts … I have a small tattoo where my watch sits on my wrist … people are often surprised that I have a tattoo … I guess they think I am not the type … is there a type? The truth is that they messed up so I really would love to get it removed and maybe have another small significant tattoo in a discreet location like my current one … I loved the significance of mine but it bugs me that it is not how I wanted it to be. Have a wonderful day … I am off to Vancouver today … (work)

  16. I agree, Banff is amazing. I’m not a city girl even though I live in Seattle. It’s all about the surrounding beautiful outdoors for me. I think you would love Vancouver, B.C.. U.S. cities I think you would enjoy are Bend, OR, Santa Cruz, CA, Flagstaff, AZ, Moab, UT and Boulder, CO. I know you will be seeing Boulder soon which I think you will enjoy. Make sure you go for a hike in the Flatirons while you are there.

  17. I love the you can highland dance!! That’s AWESOME!!

  18. Love these posts going around the blogs. I got tagged but I am boring so I keep putting off doing it but I will….

My dad collected elephants – we all have some from him – he loved them!

You are one very interesting lady! :-)

  19. No way! That’s MY car! Except it’s the 1992 model, but it’s the exact same colour and everything! That’s too funny. :D

    • Haha, I have only ever seen one other Dodge Shadow in that colour. I was pulling out of a parking lot and it drove by – the guy driving it opened his mouth and pointed at me. Apparently he was excited too.

  20. I agree wholeheartedly with you about Banff. I’ve done some traveling in other parts of Canada and in Europe, and it’s still one of the most beautiful places I’ve ever been. So amazingly peaceful.

  21. I ALSO love second hand smoke for the exact same reasons that you described. I’m a proud non-smoker these days…. but have to admit that I’ve stepped outside with smoker friends just for the smell! :-)

Also – I was on the tattoo fence for a long time… I jumped to the “dark side” and have 2 now with several future plans for more. You won’t regret it if you do it!

  22. Hello Susan,
I saw your blog on Freshly Pressed a while ago and I drop by now and then just to see how you’re doing.
If you’re an elephant fan, you might enjoy this clip from the Aunty Jack Show, an Australian comedy from the early 1970s. There is some swearing, but probably nothing compared to what you hear on the school bus nowadays…

  23. were you the only one who smoked in your family? I find banaff too cold and nothing great about it. Anywhere in France r Italy is so much more beautiful.

    • My dad smokes cigars, and my sisters used to be social smokers. But I was the only one who consistently smoked cigarettes – about a pack every three days.
