Wigging Out

From all the accounts I’ve read, and from what various health professionals have told me, lymphoma chemotherapy is notoriously potent. Part of the reason why the disease is so treatable is because they create a chemo cocktail that really pounds it down. And in return, may pound me down a little too.

One of the side effects of chemo that everrrryone talks about is the hair. Some people get really, really disturbed by the idea of losing their hair. And chances of me losing mine are pretty darn high.

Now, it’s hard to predict how I’ll react to such events, because I suppose pulling out clumps of one’s mane will certainly be upsetting. But I also know myself, and I know that losing my hair probably won’t be the most upsetting part of this whole process.

I’ve never really been attached to my hair like most other girls. When I was 14-years-old, I chopped it ALL off and had it every colour (and I mean every colour) of the rainbow since. I cut my own hair for a long time, never really caring to spend a whole lot of money to get perfect locks.

Actually, in some sick way, I am looking forward to losing my hair. Because it will give me an excuse to rock looks I’ve never been able to achieve with my own hair before. I’ve got my sights set on some pretty funky wigs.

Currently topping the list are:

A very straight short black cut with thick bangs.

A red wig of some sort. Long ones like this are probably expensive, but I figure if I’m going to go red I might as well go bright red ;)

Or hell, maybe I could just go all out.

Hot pink maybe??

Anyways, I am off to surgery in about an hour. They’re cutting into my armpit to take out a lymph node which will hopefully, finally give me a diagnosis. I’ll be all doped up on anaesthesia and pain meds for the next couple days, so don’t worry if I don’t respond to messages and e-mails. See ya on the other side!

  1. Always in my thoughts Susan!
    xo

  2. Thinking of you!! I say go with Hot Pink :) The bob with bangs is super cute too!

  3. What a GREAT way to make this a *little* bit easier on you! I was hoping you wouldn’t say you were going to be all depressed about losing your hair…because I was going to say, “You can have ANY hairstyle you want now!”

I say the second you start losing your hair…you should make a youtube video copying the G.I. Jane scene where Demi Moore shaves hers. :) Make it a fun thing for yourself.

Good luck today, girlfriend…I hope it goes well and you get your answers!

  4. I love the long red one!

I can imagine that losing hair would be tough but at the end of the day it is saving your life and it will grow back!

Your positive attitude it very inspiring.

  5. I would totally be looking forward to the wig experience a bit too. I think because you rock the red hair so well you can pull off a lot of looks. So have fun with it!

Good luck today! Yay for anesthesia and a diagnosis!

  6. Thinking of you today ! I like ALL of the choices above – you’d look fab in any of them or with no hair at all. You are fricking amazing either way!!! Sitting here in Atlanta sending all the healing energy I can muster right to your surgery room.

  7. Bob with bangs!!! So cute!

  8. My mom said the best part of her chemo was that she never had to shave anymore! I’ll be keeping my fingers crossed for you today (and tomorrow and the day after, etc.). Your positive attitude is absolutely amazing and you are so inspiring that I can’t help but think you’ve got a very very very long life ahead of you. You’ll totally beat this, I’m sure of it.

  9. Good luck!!! I’ll be thinking of you today!

  10. Please know I am completely sincere when I say this: you have a beautiful, genuine, and infectious smile (which, rest assured, I know from the pic above, not because I spy on you :) ). Every time I visit your site that thought hits me, and for some reason it is really important to me that you know it.

You will rock whichever funky wig you choose.

Absolutely all best wishes for the surgery today. I know it’s not fun, I’m 2-days off the operating table myself and empathise, but heck, you said so yourself – you’ve already made it through much longer and worse. You’re a strong one.

  11. Thinking of you and the surgery! I hope it goes well and you are able to get a diagnosis very soon.

  12. I think you should just shave your head bald before it can start falling out. I tried to get Judy to do that, but she thought I was being foolish :)

Good luck today and I’ll be praying for you.

  13. See, this kind of stuff is why I think we would be awesome friends in real life. I am also not at all attached to my hair, and like chopping it off/coloring it regularly. It grows back!

I’ve gotta endorse the redhead look, for sure.

Hoping all goes well today! <3

  14. How about a glitter wig?! I’d be all over that!

    Thinkin’ on ya!

  15. Hope your procedure goes well, and they get enough from it to determine a diagnosis. And I hope it’s the most treatable form of lymphoma. I’m thinking of you (especially when I’m at work on my haematology-oncology ward). I’ve met some inspiring people on it, and I’m sure you’d be one of them if I was looking after you on there x

  16. ~ thinking of you today ~

  17. Good luck with the surgery. I’ll be thinking about you.

  18. Even though I don’t personally know you, I’ve been thinking about you all the time. Wishing you the best today, and every day. :)

  19. You will rock any of those wings! Some girlfriends and I went to a wig shop and tried on different ones – each one gave me a total alter ego – and it was so fun. I did long brown with bangs – felt like a sassy vixen. Then short blond arched bob – which made me feel like I should be at a disco! haha

Good luck with your surgery today – thinking about you!

  20. You have such a pretty face and coloring you could do just about any style or color you’d want! :)

I know losing hair is a very emotional part of the chemo process for a lot of people. A guy at work’s wife is very religious and hasn’t cut her hair since 1976!!! She is undergoing chemo and he is worried about how she will deal with the loss. I’m glad you are thinking ahead as to how to make it easier and maybe even have fun with it! I actually have experience with wigs due to a perm that literally made all my hair break off like right at the scalp. I had three different ones and they really were a bit fun! I had a serious one for work and two fun ones for hanging out!

  21. i think you + hot pink hair would be super cute. thinking of you today!

  22. What? I thought that blondes have more fun, no?? ;-)

  23. I love your attitude, and the red hair! Good luck with the surgery.

  24. those are some awesome wigs. can’t wait to see what you pick out! hugs and healthy thoughts from this coast. :)

  25. Praying for you today as you enter into surgery, Susan! My husband had the exact same one done – his pain was pretty minimal and I hardly notice that scar under his armpit (although he probably has more hair there than you)… ;) And so fun with the wigs! You are beautiful inside and out, and I think it says so much about you that you’re willing to have a more light-hearted perspective when it comes to your hair. Will continue keeping up with your story, friend. :)

  26. Um, I’m really looking forward to your posts about wigs! Promise me one thing, okay? If you do a hot pink wig, please paint your nails hot pink as well :-) Good luck today! I will be thinking of you.

  27. That’s a freakin awesome way of looking at it. And SO true too. Rock some fabulous wigs! Prayers for you during your surgery.

  28. Good luck!!! Saying many many prayers. I think you would ROCK the pink hair :)

  29. I didn’t even think about the fact that you will lose your hair! Oh my gosh, you have to get, like, 18 wigs.

PLEASE text me when you get out of surgery. Waiting to hear!

  30. Yesss, I LOVE the Pulp Fiction wig idea!! :) You will look hot, no matter what. I’m crossing my fingers and toes that this surgery goes really well!

  31. Thinking of you. Your attitude is amazing!

  32. I say get the whole bunch and rotate according to your mood (:

Oh and sometimes when hair grows back it comes in curly…my mom’s did and she used to have straight hair.

I read your blog often (thanks to Deb’s blog) and especially lately.

Sending prayers and good energy to you…you’ve had a tough time these past (many months). Glad you are near your family these days..what a blessing.

    • Yes, I hear that hair will often grow back differently!! Everyone I know who has lost their hair had it grow back in much nicer. I just pray it won’t be as frizzy when it comes back ;)

  33. Hot pink for sure! Prayers going up for you now!

  34. Good luck lady your an inspiration to us all x x

  35. Pearl Paskell

  36. I would totally rock the pink ‘do!

  37. Just stumbled across your blog. I’ll be thinking of you and sending positive energy. By the way- I love the Pulp FIction look!

  38. Your positive attitude is so inspiring. I love all those wigs/ cuts. I say go crazy!

  39. I just started following your blog not too long ago. I really enjoy visiting everyday. I wanted to let you know that you are in my thoughts and prayers!

  40. Praying and thinking of you!

  41. Praying for a speedy recovery! XOXO

I say go all out! But that’s just me :D The red would look amazing on you too!

  42. All those wigs would look so cute on you, your face and coloring could pull off all kinds of looks. My mom said she only had to shave her legs once a month during chemo so there is something good right there. Good luck Susan, I will be sending you good thoughts!

  43. So glad to see you have kept your sense of humor!! I’m a new reader, but I know I probably wouldn’t sound as ‘upbeat and positive’ as you do! Your positive attitude reminds me to not get all stressed out over the little things and that I should have a more positive attitude… I guess I am trying to say that you are an inspiration and THANK YOU for that.

I totally think you should ROCK the redhead look ;)

  44. You could totally rock that red!
    Thinking of you <3

  45. The red one would look great on you. If you get chance you should go for a crazy hairstyle before you start chemo. I vote for a bright pink mohican!

    Hope surgery went well.

  46. I know what you mean about sort of looking forward to losing your hair. I had cancer about 12 yrs ago (thyroid) and cut my long hair very short in preparation for it to thin and fall out. Being a child of the 60’s I’ve always valued my long blond hair and it got a lot of attention, but I really wanted to see how I looked and felt without it. Short was liberating as far as washing, styling etc. Bald would have been …. like a social experiment on myself. Anyway, thyroid cancer treatment doesn’t include chemo and the radiation was slight so I kept all my hair. Good luck with your hair. I’ve heard it sometimes grows back after treatment as different hair, curlier, straighter, whatever it wasn’t before.

  47. Go nuts! Wig shopping is great fun, why not embrace your situation and try out some awesome new looks- I’m loving your attitude. Keep your chin up, you can do it! :) xxx
