Where The Buffalo Roam

How is everyone’s weekends going?? Mine has been stellar, I spent it in the Empire State ;)

Friday night I drove to Buffalo, NY with some friends. It’s only about an hour and a half from Toronto without heavy traffic, so it’s a short and fun trip to the States for us!

Emphasis on the fun and a definite lack of healthy. Hey, I’m young and carefree. I know most bloggers skip over these parts, but excursions such as these have been an important part on my journey to find “balance.” I’ve been a good girl these past few weeks in preparation for this…

When in Buffalo my friends. You leave all your rules and regulations at the border ;)

We started off Friday night at a cool bar called Mulligans.

I stuck to mostly whiskey & club soda with a lemon wedge. It’s my go-to drink, a little lower calorie and I lovelovelove the taste of whiskey!

I have no idea what this bar is called, but it’s where we ended the night. Did you know the bars are open till 4am in Buffalo?? That’s crazy! They’re only open until 2am in Toronto and most other parts of Canada. As hard as we tried, we just couldn’t make it to last call and stumbled back early ;)

We woke up Saturday in need of two things: coffee & greasy grub. I asked the front desk where the best breakfast in town was and he directed us to the Towne Restaurant.

It was a nice Greek restaurant with a home-style breakfast menu.

There were a lot of Greek-inspired breakfast options as well, but I went for something more traditional.

Corned Beef Hash & Eggs.

I ate the eggs and hash on top of my toast and it was gooooood. Hit the spot ;)

We spent Saturday afternoon shopping at the outlet stores in Buffalo. So many good deals! I got a pair of Gap jeans for $16. Unreal. I’d normally pay 80 bucks for those! Also hit up the Under Armour outlet for some workout gear. Excited to try it out.

After the shopping, we needed to fuel up again. We lucked out this weekend because it also happened to be the Buffalo Chicken Wing Festival. Apparently people travel from all over to check this out!

Now I’ll be honest here, I don’t like Buffalo wings. I’m not a fan of the excessive sauce, the crappy and minimal meat, and of course the mess! I decided to give wings one last try. I figured if I didn’t like them here, then it was just not meant to be.

I got some mild and bbq wings from the Anchor Bar tent. Anchor Bar invented the chicken wing so I thought they’d be the best. My thoughts? Still don’t like ‘em. Give me a juicy chicken breast or plain turkey drumstick any day ;)

I counteracted the heat of the wings with a cool mixed berry fruit smoothie.

As well as a corn on the cob to get those veggies in!

Hands down, the best thing I tried at the festival…

There weren’t any chicken wings on it – just tortilla chips with spices and a cheese that tasted like con queso dip. Phenomenal.

As we were leaving, we walked past the deep-fry tent. Omg. My stomach lurched.

We continued to class it up Buffalo style Saturday night ;)

I stuck to Blue Moon – my new favourite American beer.

Also tried a Rolling Rock which was quite refreshing!

And, erm, jager bombs…

Believe it or not, I actually took it easy with the alcohol on Saturday. I didn’t feel the need to go all out two nights in a row.

Back to Mulligan’s!

I am a HUGE fan of how many of the bars in Buffalo have jukeboxes. I can be a control freak when it comes to music and looooove picking out songs to listen to!

We ended up at another bar to play some pool, where I lost horribly every time.

Anyone seen Inception? Upside down hotel scene??

Silly boys…

Oh dear.

I think I will need to do a little more training before I’m agile enough to run up walls :P

I woke up feeling a lot more chipper Sunday morning. I had my heart set on going to IHOP for the first time, but the Buffalo location is closed! So we went to the Denny’s across the street instead.

I tried to keep it healthier here. I’ve never been to a Denny’s before either and parts of the menu were frightening.

Dry english muffin, egg whites and a chicken sausage.

Avec ketchup et fruit!

On our way back we stopped at a Target, which I’ve also never been to!

Unfortunately by this point I was done spending money, but it was neat to poke around. For some reason it’s hard to find big stores like this in Toronto. I haven’t been to a Wal-Mart in forever.

So no, definitely not a healthy weekend to talk about on this healthy living blog. But in my opinion, letting loose and living life is sometimes the healthiest thing we can do ;) Now if you don’t mind, I have to go to bed. I have an appointment with the treadmill tomorrow!

Question of the Day: What’s your favourite greasy spoon breakfast? I’m all about the soft poached eggs on dry wheat toast and a pile of fresh fruit! Okay, and I’ll take some fried potatoes in there too ;)

  1. glad you had fun in america!!! I typically get 2 eggs over medium with toast, fruit and coffee. I never feel too full after eating this breakfast, and it’s good everywhere I go.

  2. I love greasy spoon breakfast – corned beef hash, scrambles, omelets, eggs benedict. Oh lordy, anything with eggs.

  3. It looks like you got a good taste of America…Denny’s, Target, and Blue Moon! Haha I am glad you had fun!

My favorite greasy breakfast isn’t necessarily greasy per se but it is a far cry from healthy. In an ode to my freshmen year of college…a HUGE blueberry muffin and an egg omelet stuffed to the brim with veggies and piles of shredded cheese smothered in ketchup.
Every so often my cravings for that meal become almost unbearable! lol!

  4. “I lovelovelove the taste of whiskey!” —ewww, i hate it!

the fact that you dont like wings, ok, that’s good :)

denny’s, yes a freak show of food but nothing better some some greasy denny’s at 5am or at 9am if you still havent been to bed yet :)

i was up til 5am, 6am, and 630am Thurs Fri Sat…so who says late nights are reserved for you young single things :)

running up the walls of the hotel…..glad i wasnt staying there LOL

the boys in this post…umm, they seem date-able. Have you looked into that ? :)

the cheap gap score, nice $!6!!

Sounds and looks like an awesome weekend, congrats!!!

  5. Looks like a totally awesome time! I think its great that you post about stuff like this, your right, life is all about balance and going out and enjoying yourself should be a big part of it! I had a hangover yesterday morning and poached eggs made my perfect hangover breakie.

  6. Sweet pictures!! I am so unamerican. I want to go see NY so bad. My husband was even born there.

    Biscuits and gravy mmm……

  7. So funny to see you cross the border to go to Buffalo. We used to do the trip in reverse in college :-) Toronto was an escape from the US.

I love omelets with feta and spinach and dry rye toast from any diner.

  8. Weekends like this happen to me allllll the time. It’s life and it’s fun! Like you said, you are healthy and balanced and this is part of that :)

Favourite greasy spoon breakfast is usually one of those reedonkulous everything omelettes which basically is the size of your head and sososoososo delicious. YUM.

  9. I would have to say my fave greasy spoon to date in IHOP, but in Toronto I love going to Boom Breakfast – is not super greasy, but great breakfasts!

  10. Sounds like fun, girl:) Glad you had a good time and got to go to Target! It’s one of my favorite stores, but there isn’t one in my city so I don’t get to go very often.

I’ve never been a big fan of cooked breakfast, but I guess I’d have to say pancakes. Does that count?

  11. Looks like a fun weekend! I would invite you about 3 hours south of Buffalo to Pittsburgh. It’s a WONDERFUL city! If you ever make it here I will warn you that the Primanti’s sandwich is as good as it’s reputation says (but also 1200 + calories).

  12. I’m glad you had fun in my hometown! I’ll be honest, I was a little nervous you would not like it when I saw you tweeted you were coming here!

That bar is called “The Pink” and it’s infamous for being the last bar stop before stumbling home. When I was in art school, everyone ended up there (an art school friend of mine even painted that weird exterior….).

I’m glad you went to the Towne though! I rarely go to resturants, but do visit that one sometimes :) I have never been to the wing festival though, even after living here for 24 years! go you! ….allllso, I’m glad you had to pass on IHOP…it is scary :)

    Come back soon!

    • I’ll be honest too – a lot of people told me Buffalo was a hole. But I really liked it!! We kept calling it the “New Brunswick of America.” For some reason it’s look and vibe reminded me a lot of my home back East :)

  13. Greasy spoon breakfasts are all about eggs and potatoes… Pretty much the best hangover cure ever.

  14. Looks like you had an absolute blast!! If I’m ever in your neck of the woods, you have to take me out on the town for a night out, mmk? You know how to have some fun! :)

  15. Haha – I love buffalo wings. I mean love! I love the hot sauce and dipped in blue cheese with the crispy skin of the wing. D’oh! I rarely have them now, but I sure could put them away.

Favorite greasy spoon brekkie? Cheese omelet, toast and home fries. Oh yes.

  16. Looks like quite a fun weekend! I love New York! :-)

  17. My favourite greasy spoon breakfast is the exact same as yours! Looks like you had a great weekend and I’m jealous that you were outlet shopping! I’m definitely not much of a chicken wing fan either – it just seems like so much work, so many bones, and way too much mess for such a small amount of meat!

  18. Oh the debauchery! :-) Yes, I agree with averie- the boys are cute :-)

Love the Inception photos- and you look GREAT- no 5 pounds to lose there, silly sausage!

I don’t think I’ve ever eaten a chicken wing- what’s the point? There’s no MEAT!!!

Never seen Blue Moon- will try that some time.

Glad you had a blast! :-)

  19. Hhhmmm, greasy spoon breakfast. i’m going to say pancakes or waffles with the works. syrup, cream, everything!

  20. Fun to see that I was not the only one with a not-so-healthy-weekend. Yours looked like A LOT of fun too :)

  21. I love Blue Moon beer.

My favorite greasy spoon breakfast is probably biscuits and gravy! YUM!

  22. 2 thumbs up for your fun cross-border weekend. It’s ALWAYS more fun when you make a run for the border my dear, isn’t it. ;)

My favorite greasy spoon breakfast is a tie – Western Sandwich with homefries on the side (pass the ketchup) or belgian waffles.

  23. i love this post! going out and having fun IS an essential part of livin’ the good life. and those inception like pics are hilarious!

    love you lady!

p.s. if you can’t tell, i had 9 posts of yours to catch up on :)
