Goodies & Answers

I got some woooonderful feedback on my last post about maintaining healthy lifestyles and dealing with food cravings. I loved reading through the responses on my my new handy-dandy phone while on my break at work today :)

So I know today is Waffle Wednesday and all. But in the spirit of cravings – I just had to give in to mine today!

Molasses custard oats.

  • 1/2 cup rolled oats
  • 1 cup water
  • 1/4 cup almond milk
  • 1 egg (stirred in while cooking)
  • cinnamon, pumpkin spice, ground ginger
  • 2 tsp molasses (one in the oats, one drizzled on top)
  • 1 tbsp almond butter
  • 2 tbsp coconut chia granola

I swear there was oatmeal under there!!!

This was a crazy delicious bowl. One of my best in a while!! I owe it all to Bekah, who sent me a Christmas care package full of food blogger friendly goodies :)

Thank you SO much Bekah!! Included is the coconut chia granola, maple cumin almonds and two pumpkin cookies. I’ve nibbled on the almonds and omgtheyaregood. Cumin is one of my favourite spices ever.

While on the topic of fun gifts, I also received a boatload of bar samples from the fine folks at Vega!

All the flavours of the new Vibrancy Bar. I’m really excited to try these. I’ve been eyeing the Vega bars at the grocery store for a while now. Thank you so much Kelly and Sequel Naturals! I have to say, Vega is one company I really like. Even though I’m not a vegan, I love their healthy approach to nutrition for athletes and active people. I’ll be reviewing the bars as I devour them ;)

I’d actually brought a Clif bar as a morning snack to work today. But while in the stock room, my lovely coworkers baked an extra blueberry muffin for me as a morning treat. It was a nice gesture, and to be honest, the muffin sounded fabulous!! Knowing they’re giant and mega calorie dense, I cut it in half and partook in our muffin feast. It was fun and delicious. Nothing beats muffins fresh out of the oven. Being around all those treats at work can sometimes be hard. But I’m learning to turn down the ones I don’t really want, and having little pieces of the ones I know I’ll enjoy. So far, I feel okay about it :)

Cake disguised as muffins isn’t really filling though, I was starving come lunchtime!

Turkey n’ hummus pita. Probably my favourite pita combo of all time. Chased down with an uber ripe pear.

I had to run a bunch of errands after work, which resulted in me walking in the door ready to eat my arm off again. Dinner needed to be quick. Enter lunch, revised.

Smoked tofurkey slices, jarlsberg, mustard, pickles, mushrooms, onions, tomato and spinach on lavish bread. With sweet potato cheetahs.

Followed by a candy cane from Santa for dessert.

My Starbucks kiosk is directly beside the Santa’s workshop set-up in the mall where the kiddies go to sit on his lap. Today’s Santa was particularly jolly and came over to give us candy canes :)

Today’s question comes from Lauren, who asked:

The question is what’s been the hardest part of your journey to health so far? What’s the most important thing you’ve learned about yourself?

I’d say the hardest part has been learning not to alienate myself or those around me in my quest to be healthy. Socially, it can be hard to always take the “healthy” route when everyone else around you isn’t. This happens a lot when I’m out at bars, at work, or even at home with my family. Today’s muffin feast is an example of that. I didn’t want to blow off my coworkers by making them think I was too good for them and their treats. But at the same time, I wanted to make a wise food choice. So I compromised, and in the end was happy with my decision.

Additionally, trying to be healthy is a time commitment. Going to the gym, preparing healthy meals, and even yoga, all take time away from what I could be spending with friends and family. I often don’t get to hang out with Chris much in the evenings because I’ve committed to waking up early to workout the next day. Or I want to prepare a whack of healthy food to bring with me to work. I haven’t always succeeded at this, but I’m thankful to have people in my life that are so understanding about it.

In that vein, I have definitely learned that it’s important to be up front and honest about my health goals. I can confidently say that everyone in my life now knows there’s a “New Susan” in town, and life is infinitely more easy with them knowing that. When I go home, my mom makes sure there’s oatmeal and gym access for me. And people don’t push beer on me nearly as much as they used to ;)

Most importantly though, I think I’ve learned that I’ll always be a work in progress. There is no “end date” to this journey, because the quest to being healthy never ends. I am learning more about myself and what I can achieve every single day. I no longer have a “goal” in mind as to what I want to be or look like some day. The best I can do is just that – do my best every day. So far I’ve been really happy with the results from that :)

Tomorrow wraps up Q&A week! You can still get any last minute questions in. Just leave a comment or pop me an e-mail at thegreatbalancingact@gmail.com :)

Question of the Day: What’s one thing you’ve recently learned about yourself? I’ve learned that I can’t survive without coffee in the morning. I had to go 90 minutes today between waking up and making an Americano when I got to work. It was brutal!!!

  1. I think in honor of your missed waffles, you should make tomorrow an honorary Waffle Wedthursday.

I have found the same difficulty with alienating others in my change in diet and lifestyle. Even after a few years of this, I still feel awkward going to restaurants with my family and making strict requests (no oil or butter, sugar free this, etc.). Dinners at the in-laws feel even worse. I always think that declining that piece of cake or the side of mashed potatoes is an insult. I’m so glad that someone feels the same way I do. It’s always going to be a work in progress.

Here’s my question for you – If you could, with no consequences, throw the “Great Balancing Act” out of the window for 24 hours, what would you eat and do?

  2. YAYYYY. So happy my granola made its way onto a holy yum bowl of oats. Seriously, other than sending my love via snail mail, my intentions in sending food were to make its way from my kitchen to yours and be stellar. Thanks for the shout out. :)

And yummm that turkey+hummus pita looks awesome.

  3. My question- from a fellow embarrassed muncher to another: When you munch, what are your munch foods?

Mine are chocolate chips, cereal/granola, and the PB jar. Gross I know- but it happens.

  4. i LOVE that wrap combo girl! and adding an egg into your oats? ive never tried that! i bet its very filling tho!

  5. ohh. love the part about not alienating yourself. i know that all too well! good answer susan :) the hot blueberry muffin sounds delicious and you know i am a sucker for a good pear!! i need to try these custard oats. i still have never put egg whites in oats~jumping from no eggs to egg yolk could be interesting :) hope your thursday is fantastic!!! xoxoxo

  6. Glad to hear that the mall has a *good* Santa, in addition to the one that we saw with DS :(

DH and I were quite ticked. The guy was sitting there, tapping his foot and looking like he was just waiting to get out of there. No “ho, ho, ho” or anything jolly. We actually had to tell DS that the mall Santa is not the real Santa because after sitting on his lap, he said that he didn’t think it was Santa!! Pathetic.

    Now I’m craving molasses :)

    • Yeah, the Harvey Studios girls said there are about five Santas, two of which are actually fun and jolly. Except the jolly ones have a tendency to “Ho Ho Ho” loudly at random intervals and it always scares the crap out of me!

Funny, when I was a kid, I didn’t believe mall Santas were the “real” Santas either ;)

  7. What a fab looking bowl of oats.
Those new vega bars look good- I can’t wait to see what you think!

I love love love muffins straight from the ove… but I hate they don’t fill me either!

Loved the answer. True in every way.

    xo
    K

  8. I couldn’t go 90 minutes without coffee after waking up. I turn on the kettle and my laptop before I even throw on my fluffy bathrobe!

How are you liking your coworkers? Overall…the job? Good/bad? Ugly? :P

I’ve loved the Q and A this week! I think it’s hard to not alienate yourself when you are on a different path from others. It’s something I struggle with a lot- ALL my friends are people I have met in hospital and it’s not easy to break away from friendships/relationships that aren’t healthy. I guess that’s kind of different? IDK.

  9. Sometimes I feel like I’m a burden on others with my ‘healthy’ eats but with time it has become easier. I think I’m just more self conscious about it – I think that my friends really don’t care but I’m afraid that I’ll be the trouble one, I hope that made sense. With time I’ve gotten over it though :)

  10. I love molasses! The other day I was making gingerbread cookies and couldn’t help but sneak a couple tastes! haha

  11. Good answer about balancing healthy living and not being alienated. Since I’ve had to quit eating gluten I feel like it would be very easy to alienate myself from friends and cowokers, but I’m making it work!

I wish I could come up with a question. When the time comes to post one I draw a blank! lol! Later I think of dozens.

  12. Great answer to that very common question. It’s such an important part of working through our own personal journeys.

    Great looking oats!

  13. gah, susan. you said it so beautifully – it iS a journey. there is no end, which is why i need to constantly remind myself (like now) that off weeks are going to happen. but its getting back into things and not letting everything slide that is important.

love you, your wrappage, your oatmeal AND the fact you said it was cake disguised as a muffin. i couldn’t have said it better myself :)

    have a wonderful day!

  14. I just saw Bekah make Molasses custard oats on her site. Or something kinda close to that…anyway, i am egg allergic so couldnt do the custard thing…but dear god those look AHHH mayzing!!!

Love your q & a sesh, too. I can go without coffee til about 12 noon but am jones’ing for it all day. Then I tend to OVER drink it. Whereas if I just had it at the normal time, I wouldnt have guzzled more than necessary :)

  15. Once again, you just shared some really wise advice, Susan! I love what you said about not making there be a “end date” to your health. So true! Health is a lifetime commitment!

Oh, and one thing I learned: There is a reason why people avoid too much candy…my teeth is hurting and I think I might have cavities!

  16. Lynn at The Actors Diet

breakfast looks amazing – i need to get some molasses in my pantry STAT!

  17. oh that bowl of oatmeal looks SO good :) egg in the oats is my new favorite thang. so creamy and delish!

  18. Breakfast looks delish.

I’ve never heard of Vega bars but will have to keep my eye out for them. :)

  19. Amen to a work in progress. I’m still a work in progress and I’ve got a number of years on you (sniff), so I imagine I’ll probably be a WIP for EVER!! Still learning. Still trying. Still failing sometimes and succeeding others.

Miss Beek’s yummies are soooo delish. We are lucky.

Funny, I just commented about how you’re doing well with eating around the bucks as you were concerned about the attack of the killer muffin from years past. But I think that you did the absolute right thing. If you can’t enjoy a fabulous half of a muffin straight out of the oven every once in a while, life would be rather sad. You’re not doing it daily- nor are you eating a whole 500 calorie muffin+. That’s why your blog is the Great Balancing Act!
