A Speedy Start to December & A New Set of Goals

Hello friends! Well, today has not been great. In fact, I am very happy to be full of spin class endorphins and cuddled up in my jammies right now.

It started with my french press breaking. This is nothing short of a tragedy. I took apart the filters yesterday to wash them and I think the screw that holds them together went down the drain. I ended up just pouring my coffee over the filter into the mug this morning. Thankfully, I do a coarse grind, so they were easy to pick out.

Then on my way to work, I got pulled over for speeding!!! Aaahhhhhhh. I was going 70km/hr in a 50km zone (ie 43 mph and not 31). A long stretch of road in the woods that just screams to be sped down. It’s my own stupid fault, and I was late for work. I cannot believe just weeks after getting into my first accident, I get pulled over for the first time too.

I’ve only had my license for a little over two years, so my slate is was completely clean. I probably would have gotten away with just a warning, had my registration and insurance cards been in the car. I know, I know. I got my new car at the end of the summer, and everything switched over during The Great Move. Moving into my current apartment was so chaotic (and maybe traumatic) that I never realized I never got my documents in the mail. Probably because they went to my old address.

Aaannnyways, what could have been $1200 in fines, ended up being $126 because I had a very nice police officer. Moral of the story is: don’t speed, make sure you have all the necessary documents in your glove compartment, don’t drive down long deserted roads that are too tempting to speed on.

Phew! But lets get to the good stuff, shall we? My protein pancakes this morning were particularly fluffy and delicious.

Recipe can be found under the Eats tab along with my new additions: Peanut Butter Hummus, Peanut ButterNut Squash Muffins, and Thick n’ Spicy Moo-Beef Chili.

For breakfast dessert, I got to crack into my advent calendar!!!

Some Christmas traditions don’t need to end just because your grown up. I look forward to this little piece of cheap chocolate every day leading up to Christmas!

Today was my day off from the radio station, but I still had to go in for training at Starbucks this afternoon. Normally, I would work out before work, but I really wanted a leisurely morning in bed. It was nice :)

My new favourite lunch…

Smoked salmon is not only tasty, but full of Omega 3’s to bump my fat intake up. And pears are the new apples, right Janetha? :P

Packed lots of snacks for Starbucks this afternoon so I would be sufficiently fuelled for spin class after.

I snacked on the green pepper and peanut butter hummus while working through my training book. Then had the chocolate banana protein bar muffin (with PB in between) before leaving for spin. Don’t worry Brie, the KIND bar is still in my purse ready for my next snack attack ;)

As always…. spin was awesome!!! Usually I do the normal “RPM” class, which is another one of the Les Mills pre-choreographed classes. But tonight’s was called “Mixed Terrain,” i.e. whatever the instructor makes it. Lots of fun sprints and really good music. Great way to change up the regular ole’ spin routine :D

Dinner was a “burger and fries.”

The burger is actually real! The fries however are some of Meghann’s “okra fries.” I’ve never tried okra before! I sprayed them in olive oil and sprinkled some salt, paprika and chili powder on top, then roasted at 450F for 20-ish minutes. They were really good. I was not expecting the seeds in the okra. They actually reminded me a lot of papaya seeds. The okra itself was just what I expected. Typical “green veggie” taste, and a little stringy to bite into.

Goals for December

Here we go again, I’ve got more good ones for this month…

Spend 30 minutes everyday cleaning something in my apartment.
I got this one from the wonderful Holly. I’m not going to sugar coat it, I’m a slob. I always say I’m going to do something like this, but I never do. Well now I have to and hopefully my apartment will get and stay clean!

Stop procrastinating.
In other words, spend less time dinking around on the internet when I could be doing more productive things. I’m going to have a lot on my plate soon, and it’s important I start making things priority and getting them done.

One of the things I looked forward to most when I graduated university, was being able to read whatever I pleased. But besides a few cycling books and the Twilight series, I haven’t read much! There are so many books I want to read, it’s time to start cracking their spines.

Read at least one chapter a day from my personal training textbook.
I want to get through the individual course work before my classes in January. It’s a pretty info-heavy book, with a lot of science talk I haven’t seen since high school. I want to put lots of time into it so I’m good at what I do!

Listen to my body.
Now that I’ll soon be working on my feet all day, it’s even more important to tune in and see when I’m too tired to push it at the gym, or when I need to eat more energy to get me through the day.

Try more recipes.
Oddly, I don’t follow a lot of recipes when cooking meals. I’m more into trying out new ingredients, no necessarily meals. Time to dig out my cookbooks and whip up some fun dishes :)

Spend less on groceries.
Ugh, this is ongoing for me. Problem is that I eat every single thing I buy. I never throw any food out. But I’ve got to work harder at taking advantage of sales and coupons.

Get a grip.
Honestly, I feel like my life is a little out of control right now. My speeding incident today only reinforced that. How did I not realize I never got those documents?? Ever since finishing final exams in April and diving head first into a full-time job just a week after, my life has been in a spiral. It’s still messy now, but this is my chance to take a biiiig step back and start picking up the pieces. This month is all about tying up the loose ends. I’m going to get shit sorted out, and get a firm grasp on life again.

I’m excited for what this month has to bring! I think I have my work cut out for me, but hopefully the heavy weight that’s been bearing on my chest lately will slowly start to lift. I’ll of course be checking in every Sunday and updating on how I’m doing with these goals :)

Question of the Day: What are your goals for this month? Write them down and remember them! I’ll be checking in on you too every Sunday!

  1. The french press breaking?? Devastating! Maybe it is time to buy just the plastic filter that sits over the cup ala Alton Brown.

That is one hefty list of goals for the month!

I will join you on the cleaning something, but I will break it into segments of 15 minutes. (short attention span here).

  2. Oooh, I have too many goals, I really should pick some and write them down! Your ‘read more’ is at the top of my list!

  3. Wow. You really are dedicated! You’ve already accomplished so many goals for Nov, and now you’re cranking out new ones!

I have only a few goals, but one of them is to be under budget. I hope to spend less than $500 per month. Wait. It’s Christmas. Sigh. Never mind!

  4. Ooh! Sorry to hear about the rough day. I’m glad you had a spin class to look forward to after such a crappy beginning to the day.

    Goals are looking great!

  5. great goals girl!! love them!
and im wanting some pancakes NOW :)

  6. LET’S DO IT GIRL!!!!!!!!!!!

  7. I think I am making those pancakes in the morning!

Sorry to hear about your ticket…I got my first one in May for talking on my damn cell phone. So dumb (of me). And as for goals, you inspired me to write a “goals” post (heehee goalpost) so that’s what I did! I only listed a few though, to not set myself up for failure :-)

  8. I loved that you:
For breakfast dessert, I got to crack into my advent calendar!!!

Because I bought Skylar one and after dinner tonite, we cracked it open. The MAGIC of a 2.75 yr old when they see a door open with choc behind it. It’s like what makes parenthood all click in sweet moments like that :) Hope you enjoyed yours as much as we did round here :)

  9. Wow, I agree with the person who said you’ve got a lot of goals set for december! I’d be lucky to set a third of those!

Bummer about the coffee machine and ticket. I always get a sick feeling in my tummy when I get a ticket. Ack. Thank goodness you didn’t have the $1200 fine!!

Hang in there- you’re a strong and smart gal. You’ll do great!

  10. Ack, rough start indeed. Time to use your Starbucks employee discount for one of their French presses?..

I agree with a LOT of your goals- reading a chapter a day, spending less money on groceries (ongoing challenge to the MAX, lol) and yeah…need.to.get.a.grip.

  11. I share in a lot of these same goals as you. I’m sorry about the speeding ticket! If it makes you feel better, I heard something dragging on the bottom of my car like two weeks ago and I just remembered yesterday to actually care about it. I should probably check my documents…
Sometimes it just feels like life is one stressful big event after another and you really have to take the time to catch up on it all, huh?
I really need to work on the grocery thing to, what is UP with groceries haha

    • “Sometimes it just feels like life is one stressful big event after another and you really have to take the time to catch up on it all, huh?”

You took the words out of my mouth Kelly!!

  12. I’m sorry about the speeding ticket. I hate being pulled over by a policeman, it makes my heart race like I’m having a heart attack.

I hope that today goes better for you! Poor you.

  13. Oh crappy start! BUT, at least you ended on a high note with your yummy dinner and spin! I’m glad you didn’t let those things totally ruin your day.

You know, I thought of a GREAT goal for myself yesterday and was going to email you about it. Now I have no idea what it was. Aaak! Let me get back to you on that one.

And that salmon looks SO GOOD. DO you think they sell that brand down here? xoxo

    • I can’t remember the name of the salmon, but it’s made in New Brunswick. The best smoked fish is always locally done, so I’d just keep your eyes peeled :) Let me know if you think of that goal!

  14. My husband and I are trying to cut down on groceries lately too… it’s just so hard when you want to eat healthy and menu plan!!

  15. Boo hiss for the broken french press and the speeding ticket. But you still managed to get in a great workout after a rotten start to your day – good stuff. Many people would have considered the whole day in the toilet and not gone for the workout, so you definitely have something to brag about!

Like you, my life feels totally out of control. My goal for the month of December:
this morning I am printing a December calendar, filling in all of my “to do’s” and then following it to the best of my ability – stress free. I’m not going to let this crazy month make me crazy miserable. I’m just not.

  16. Shoot, I hit send too soon! I grew up having an advent calendar every year too!! I bought my kids one at Chapters last year – it’s wooden with little doors and you put your own toys and candy in it. They are crazy about it! Also, re: okra – my MIL is Greek and makes okra quite often. She has a DELICIOUS recipe that I’ll get from her to share with you. It’s okra braised in tomatoes and olive oil. Yummmmmm.

    • Growing up, we had felt advent calendars and my mom put little chocolate “loonies” in the pockets. So good! I have to admit, my cheap-o calendar doesn’t really shape up :P

  17. Oh no!! That’s always my fear with me driving my “new” car around the roads up here. Back in Newfoundland I knew exactly where all the coppers hid, and I knew what places to not speed and whatnot. Here, I don’t – so I don’t feel like I get to have any fun, as bad as that sounds. But you know what? I don’t trust a lot of the parking lots (especially my building’s parking garage) because windows have been busted out :( Way before I got my car though, so now I carry my insurance and whatever else the pink and green papers are, in my zip-up wallet :/ It’s annoying, but I think it’s safer there!

p.s: I haven’t had a pear in a LONG time, like a year. Thanks for re-introducing them to me, I should seriously pick some up when I head out for groceries next.

  18. Oh my goodness! You had quite the day as well!! Glad you didn’t get fined the full amount though – that would have made it 10x worse. Leisurely mornings are the best, aren’t they? I cherish my mornings like that!

Great list of goals!! You’ll be able to accomplish them :)

  19. Aww I’m sorry to hear about your speeding ticket! I speed a lot and have only got pulled over once. . luckily he let me off the hook and I got away ticket free!

I have that same little tubbaware! I love them.. they are so small and work for small portions :)

  20. Oh, rough morning! Seems like you made the best of the day though. Sweating out the frustration in a good spin class helped I bet. I love spin and wish my gym offered more of the instructor’s own workouts. We have all RPM classes at my new gym and I seriously miss the variety of my old gym’s spin classes.

    • Tina, you should recommend that your gym offer a non-RPM class! I bet they would if people showed interest :) (and seriously, those instructors have GOT to be dying to play their own music…)

  21. I too need to commit to cleaning each day. I’m a slob as well. Also spend less on dining out. Start working out again. Also try not to get so stressed! Those are my tentative goals!

You have quite a list! I’m so excited about your personal training education! :)

  22. Awwww, you have an advent calendar! That is so cute. I agree that those special things don’t need to go away simply because we are trying to be grown ups ;) I want one, too!

Goal this month: get a place to live!

  23. I want an advent calendar! :) I used to LOVE those!

Your goals look great! Very similar to mine–hopefully I can stick to them!

  24. Ah car stories always suck. they’re just the worst- glad the fine was lowered though. :(

Your goal list is great- you’ve inspired me for my next post. Lol. (ie.. i have nothing else to ramble about!)

I tried okra fries for the first time this week too! Totally weird- but good at the same time! Def something I’ll be having again.

  25. AHHH so sorry about the ticket! at least you got off a little easy though. that is good. YES pears~i am going to eat one in just a moment actually :) still never tried (nor seen) okra! i love your goals! i cannot wait to see how they all pan out. you are a goal setting and achieving machine! xoxo

  26. That smoked salmon looks good! Now I’m going to buy some of that. :)

As far as the documents and such… it is more work to put stuff off in the short term and deal with a lot later than to just methodically try to always do the most important stuff first.

The way I’ve learned over the years is paying late fees on credit card, paying extra for late auto registration fees and so on. I now give myself a date things have to be done when they come in and I force myself to look at it once a week. :)

It sounds like you are doing fine though… Keep up the great food suggestions!

  27. The Healthy Apple

I love your protein pancakes and that smoked salmon looks delishyy!!

  28. yay advent calendars!!! I’m so excited for mine everyday too! :-)
