Run With Me & Goals for November

I loved hearing the things you guys (girls?) learned over the last month. Some made me giggle, but some also really made me think. The comments are always worth reading through! :)

Reader Jenn (hi!!) asked me what route I took for my 10 mile run. An excellent question, because I’m quite attached to my trail. When I transitioned from the treadmill to outdoor running this spring, I hated running outdoors. But I eventually learned it wasn’t running outside that I hated, just my route. I was running on sidewalks and busy streets, when my heart belonged on the trail! So today I brought my camera, and subsequently you, with me! :)

No nap was needed after work today (thanks Daylight Savings!) but I did fuel up with a tootsie pop first.

Worked pretty well actually!

I’m lucky that my trail is literally across the street from my house. Was definitely a selling point for me when I found my new place.

100_9478

I only see maybe a dozen people on my runs. Most are pretty friendly. Too bad the leaves have all fallen – would have been a lot prettier a couple weeks ago.

Part of the trail runs directly along the St. John River.

100_9482

My hometown Moncton has a river that’s known as the “Chocolate River” because it’s so muddy and gross. So I never take the beauty of Fredericton’s river for granted.

100_9477

The other side of the trail is littered with gorgeous homes. Some have beautiful backyards and gardens.

100_9485

There’s also a little farm country along the way (I saw horsies on my 10 miler!)

100_9496

And don’t worry mom, it’s not totally deserted! There’s an Irving gas station along the way (I am in New Brunswick after all…)

100_9500

The worst part however comes on the last kilometre when I actually run past my house. I like to do a little loop, so I get a 7 minute cool-down walk in at the end.

100_9503

This is usually where I start running fast. I can’t help it. My brain was all set to keep my pace for the last 5-6 minutes today, but my legs just started moving faster on their own! :P

This was supposed to be a 45 minute run, but turned into 50 minutes with the photo taking. I was running close to 9 minute miles the whole time too, so I actually covered close to 5 miles. I was feeling good after resting Friday then just doing yoga on Saturday.

I also have to share the stellar breakfast cookie I had this morning.

100_9455

I’m not sure whether to call this a s’mores or fluffernutter breakfast cookie.

  • 1/2 cup rolled oats
  • 1/2 scoop chocolate whey powder
  • 1 tbsp peanut butter
  • 1 tbsp Fluff
  • 1/2 tbsp mini chocolate chips
  • splash almond milk

It was pretty decadent – even for me!

However, not all my eats were stellar today.

100_9467

Store-bought apple sauce will never be the same now I’ve experienced the glory that is homemade apple sauce.

100_9470

It was borderline gross. I think I’ll save this for baking and get a bag of apples for sauce-making asap.

Today also marks the start of a new month! Which means it’s time to set a new set of goals for the days ahead.

First, let’s check in and see what goals I set for October:

  • Manage my time better so I get more out of my day.
    • I kind of sucked at this one. It’s a work in progress!
  • Continue using my new tiny kitchen to the fullest.
    • Check! There was lots of activity in there last month :)
  • Complete my first double-digit run
    • Check!!! :D
  • Do some freelance writing. Preferably paid.
    • No check. Unfortunately, since I sucked at goal #1, I didn’t have time to set this up. But this is something I’d still like to continue to work on.
  • Make a trip home.
    • Does one meal at home count? How sad is that, especially since my hometown is only a 90 minute drive away. Luckily, I’m heading there on Tuesday, so we’ll just call this one “late” :)
  • Get the guts to take a Zumba class.
    • Check!! Glad I made this a goal, otherwise I would have continued to chicken out.
  • Be more social. Join groups and reconnect with those I’ve lost touch with.
    • This didn’t happen. However, I think quitting my job is a step in the right direction toward this. Hopefully, I’ll be able to join groups when I’m working normal hours for once.

Now, for November?

  • Spend less on groceries. Seriously, time to batten down the hatches.
  • Have fun workouts. No training plans this month, no workout stress!
  • Be less complacent with food. This will be explained in further detail in tomorrow’s post.
  • Get more sleep. This is an ongoing issue that I think is more than just scheduling and bad time management. There are reasons I can’t sleep, and it’s time to get to the bottom of it.
  • Make it through the last month of work with a positive attitude.
  • Try my best to not let anything hold me back.
  • Figure out a way to get into the holiday season. I hate Christmas, but it would be nice to not be so miserable and grouchy about it this year.
  • Spend more time with my grandparents. I am lucky to have three left, and they need to see more of my face, and I need to soak in more of their warmth and wisdom.
  • Be more honest with people. I tend to sugar-coat things, and sometimes that does more harm than good.
  • Look for a job. Not just for security, but one that will ignite some passion in me.
  • Start playing music again. I haven’t picked up my guitar in seven months.

It’s quite the lofty list! Last month was my first month doing this, so I maybe didn’t take it as seriously as I should have. But this month I really want to commit myself to this. So every Sunday, I’m going to be checking in and updating on how they’re coming along.

Question of the day: What are your goals for November? Better make them good, I just might check in with you too! ;)

  1. That is a lovely trail! Is there a reason why you can’t bike on this trail? I would have mine there in a heartbeat :D

November goals… some are mundane – like refinancing my rental property (which will be a huge relief, actually).
My husband and I have been doing a lot of chatting about business possibilities, and I really want to maybe settle on one and flesh out a business plan to see how doable it is and if the scare factor is too much.

Don’t you just wish money didn’t make the world go round?

    • Lori, gravel is a no-go with the road bike :( Another reason why I want to get a hybrid for next year. It’s a pretty low speed trail though, I think there may actually be speed restrictions on it.

  2. I can’t believe you hate Christmas. That’s insane! :D But, there are lots of holidays that aren’t my favorites, so alls fair, right?

I was wondering… exactly how do you get your cookie to a consistency that it’s able to be held? All the breakfast cookie recipes I’ve seen require leaving the cookie on a plate. Is the fluffernutter the key?

  3. Very pretty! I would honestly run outside a ton if I didn’t live in a neighborhood full of scary Alpine hills. Sigh.

Goals for November? Hmm. Well, the big one is to break 30:00 on my 5K on the 22nd, but I should think of some other ones.

  4. ahhhh susan…GOOD FOR YOU! i think all your goals sound fantastic. i am a little sad to hear you aren’t the biggest fan of christmas (we can change that…) but soooo fun to spend time with grandparents. i have one left and didn’t see him this weekend when i should have, and i am sad about that.

my november goal is just to be really money smart, work work work (its only temporary this part-time job!!!) and really just try to enjoy the month! okay, those are totally vague but i am tired and its only 7:12pm.

    enjoy your night :)

  5. Chocolate River – that kind of reminds me of Willy Wonka! What a pretty trail to run though!

Your breakfast cookie is one of the best versions I’ve seen! YUM!! Good luck with your November goals :)

  6. i love that your breakfast cookie is portable enough to put in saran wrap – is that from the freezer method? i have only made one cookie attempt, but it was so soft and mushy…

  7. I love you and your goals.

November for me, is going to be centered around the Pile On The Miles challenge. I really want to clock in at least 10 miles of walking A WEEK. I can’t run right now but I can walk so I’m going to give it my best!

Another goal is just to stay on top of my classwork and maintain my “A”.

I am also hosting my first ever Thanksgiving so my goal there is to make a GREAT turkey! :-D

  8. Aack! Susan, how could you?? I have already come to the conclusion that store bought sauce is for suckers….and baking :) I can’t remember if I told you this, but I’m eating mine now with a touch of vanilla caramel ice cream on top. It is so. good.

Hmmm…goals for November….I’ll have to think about that one! xoxo

  9. What a great blog! I just found yours. You live in NB? I live in Canada as well. Hi! I would love to get back to trail running – there aren’t any near where I live right now :(. Your a Journalist?! I love to write and wish I could do it full-time. What position do you currently hold? Do you like it? And, great goals as well. Take care.

  10. I just wrote goals for Nov on my blog too! I love the idea of checking in on Sunday night, what should we call it? everything needs a catchy unique name. Sunday’s Track? who knows….good luck on your goals!

  11. love the reflecting back on oct goals and the new ones you have set. and i loved seeing your trail! fun!! my november goals? organize my life!! the move was rough.

  12. Very sweet about your grandparents- you won’t regret that.

Qs about your COOKIE!! I need to know what “fluff” is and why the cookie looks hard- did you bake it? The stats seem like they’d be very good!

  13. Susan, I love your November goals. I’ll have to list mine myself. I esp agree with cutting down on grocery budgets, and also that you’re gonna be more honest with people!

  14. Out of curiosity, what is it about Christmas that you don’t like? If it is the materialistic focus that everything seems to have now, then I agree. I have been in a struggle for the past few years with some of my other family members about cutting back on spending for Christmas presents. It’s not that I’m trying to be cheap… I like buying things for those I love, but I hate how MUCH we spend at that one time of year. To me, (aside from religious meanings) the holiday should be about spending time together with your family, and eating lots of delicious food, not seeing how much money we can spend.

    • I tend to agree- a few years ago we decided as a family to “pick names out of a hat” and only get one person a gift- it made the holidays SOOOOOO much better. I’m actually gonna write about it- took so much stress away and made it enjoyable to concentrate on just one person and not buying loads of useless things for all the familia.

    • Seth, I’ll go into the Christmas thing in a post soon. Mainly, it’s just a very depressing holiday for me for family reasons. I sort of hold a grudge against the whole “togetherness” part of it. I agree though, I’ve never been able to afford presents for other people. Luckily, my family doesn’t mind. My gifts may be cheap, but I at least try to make them thoughtful :)

  15. LMAO….Petitcodiac = Chocolate River

As a child, I can remember going to Moncton to visit my Aunt and Uncle and we’d always go to the park on Main Street beside Rodd’s Inn to watch the Tidal Bore. I guess the old folks remember it being amazing “back in the day” but to me it was exactly what it’s name suggested…..a bore.

The Saint John is such a spectacular river and now that I’ve moved away I appreciate how truly special the area is. Nothing beats a trip across the Princess Margaret on one of those mornings just as the sun is rising….the river is as still as a sheet of glass with maybe the odd crew of rowers causing a ripple. To be able to run along side of it…..sigh…..my heart be still.

November goals: get more sleep; have more patience with the kiddos; get back on track with eating (darn Halloween); bake more; make a dent in Christmas shopping; try to run 10k

    • Haha Jenn, Tidal Bore = huge bore indeed! They’re actually opening the causeway gates in hopes to somewhat restore that river. I think if I move from Fredericton, the SJ River is what I’ll miss the most..

  16. My main goals for November are to try to stay well for a change and get to the bottom of my health issue and to make it through my cousin’s wedding.

I love that you have time with grandparents on your list. I am now grandparent-less and am all the time thinking of things I’d wished I asked them! I loved hearing stories about how things were when they were young!

  17. Gorgeous trail! :D I was so psyched to see your tweet that you took pics…thanks for sharing! (do you run in the dark?..*worries* )

Love the sound of that breakfast cookie- s’moreffernutter? Lol. I just got some chocolate whey powder so am playing around…every powder seems to require different amounts of mix-ins!

    • No need to worry Ellie, I definitely do NOT run in the dark! :D (besides being being dangerous, it gets freakin’ cold when the sun goes down! :P )

  18. hit submit to soon!

goals…LOVE the ones you set for the coming month. Being social and taking up music again is on my November list. My mom is bringing my harp over soon. Yay!

  19. Hey! I just got all caught up with you! Congrats (wrong word?) on quitting your job. Here’s to new futures full of who-knows-what. And yay for your November goals! I have seriously let myself go the last 4 weeks so my goal for the next four is to get back into regular cardio exercise, ditch the “treats” that are not making me feel good, and establish some sort of goals with working out – I’m at such a loss without a training plan!
Annnnd p.s. your running trail looks amazing!

  20. I (would) have almost all the same goals you named for November!
I have issues with sugar-coating too, but I am way too scared I’ll hurt someone’s feelings if I’m too honest (though, other people seem to worry less about that when it comes to dealing with me…)
Grocery shopping has been an expense-issue here too, but hey, we’re foodies for a reason, right?
And I also have to start playing guitar again (I’ve been better with the piano though :P)… but I should really be ashamed, cause this summer I bought a brand new acoustic Fender! And I haven’t touched it yet!

I’ll think about some more goals, but I wish you luck with yours!

    xxx

P.S. I’m sure you will anyway, but I wanted to ask you to please, please make it a priority to visit your grandparents. I lost my grandmother (the only grandparent I’ve ever really had) almost 2 years ago, and though I know I shouldn’t regret, I still wish I had spent more time with her (even though she lived on the other side of the continent). Anyway, I don’t mean this as a presumptious or arrogant piece of advice but as a well-meant request, from someone who wasn’t on time.

    • Tina, I lost my Papa two years ago, and even though I feel like I got to spend a lot of time with him, it still made me realize that my time with my other grandparents is very limited. Now I just need to put that into action. Your advice isn’t arrogant at all, but very true!!!

  21. I just found your blog and I love it! I love the idea of doing monthly goals – so many of your goals are like mine. I am going to be a regular visitor from now on!

  22. First, congrats on your double-digit run! What beautiful scenery to have for it.
Second, I didn’t realize you were quitting your job! I’ll read up on the backstory, but I hope it’s a good thing! :)
Third, I am definitely with you on spending less at the grocery store. We are getting completely out of control! Need to balance the budget ;)
