I’m not dead! Just dyed.

Good morning! I’d apologize for not posting last night, but to be honest, I’m not that sorry! :P I was feeling c-to-the-rappy yesterday and didn’t want to spread my sickness through blogging.

My sore throat has progressed to a cough, and I got a solid 8 hours of sleep last night (a rare occurrence for me). So things are at least looking up this a.m. I am currently fisting a giant mug of coffee and sporting my new hair colour :)

A little less red than I’ve been wearing lately, but no doubt will fade into a red shade anyways. And yes, I do not exaggerate when I say a giant mug of coffee. You can tell my wrist is working hard to hold it up in that picture.

Yesterday was very uneventful. I had to be at work earlier than the usual 5am. I was starving by the time I got to my breakfast cookie.

100_8825

Same mix as last weekend. It’s amazing how long a bag of M&Ms can last when you only eat a few at a time! “Old Susan” would have polished those bad boys off a long time ago… “New Susan” is enjoying savouring them :)

I was very excited to try out a new bar as my snack. For the longest time, we’ve only been able to get the Kashi chewy bars in Canada, but the cereal bars have made their way here!!!

At 120 calories, they’re pretty dinky. Not to mention only 2g of fibre and protein each.

100_8839

I’m not the biggest fan of cereal bars actually, but I thought this was still pretty decent. However, I ate it with a cheese string, and my tummy was growling 90 minutes later. So it doesn’t make for a very sustainable snack.

I dug into my lunch mega early. Thankfully, it was also mega filling and delicious :)

Salami, laughing cow, tomato, field greens, mustard on whole wheat bread. The salami is from the market. I was really excited to find it from a safe and healthy source, as the packaged salami in grocery stores is super sketchy. I’m learning that my city’s market is not always the greatest for deals on produce – but it’s awesome for fresh meat!

I also munched on edamame.

I find these single-serving packages of edamame in the freezer section of my grocery store. They’re great for packed lunches!

I was a hungry hungry hippo yesterday. A lot of snackage happened that went unphotographed. When I finally broke for dinner, I figured it was time for more kitchen clearing.

I rescued a box of Casbah falafel mix from my very top shelf.

(Recycled photo). I’ve tried many times to make falafel from scratch – but this mix still makes the best kind! Not the best ingredients compared to what I could make at home though. Just add water to the mix, shape into little patties, and bake till hard :)

Falafel salad.

  • 6 falafel patties
  • hummus
  • tabbouleh
  • tomatoes
  • red pepper
  • onions
  • field greens

Yum! I love me some falafel :) Although, I think this would have been better in a pita… with tzatzkiki…

I spent my evening watching Glee. I’ve been hearing a lot of people talk about this show, but I haven’t caught it on Canadian TV yet, so I downloaded the episodes I’ve missed. So good! Chris stopped by and proceeded to make fun of me for watching it though :P

More snackage occurred, including another kashi bar. This time seven whole grain and almond kicked up a notch with some almond butter.

Divine :) I definitely snacked more than I like to yesterday, but I also felt legitimately hungry at times. I just don’t have it in me to not eat when I’m hungry. I was also awake for 20 hours… which I guess gave me plenty opportunity to eat!

I started my morning off today on the right foot with a delicious bowl of savoury oats.

100_8871

  • 1/2 cup rolled oats
  • 1 1/4 cup water
  • 1 tsp Earth Balance spread
  • pinch kosher salt
  • 1 breakfast sausage
  • 1 soft-fried egg
  • salsa

Have you tried savoury oats yet?? If not, what are you waiting for!? I think nothing tastes better with soft egg yolks than a creamy spoonful of oats. Yummmmm…

In other news, today is my third rest day in a row. You may recall that I hurt my hip at the gym on Friday, so I took the weekend off all activity. It actually feels pretty good today, but I feel like it’s better to be safe than sorry in cases like these. I much rather take a week off exercise at the first sign of injury, than push it and have to take months off down the road to heal a more serious injury.

I think I need the rest anyways, for the first time in a while, I don’t have an inkling to exercise. I just want to work on getting my hip better, and getting rid of my cold. Then I’ll be able to give it my all when I get back to it :)

I also probably won’t be posting again tonight. I’ve got a 10-11 hour work day ahead of me and I just don’t think I’ll have the energy. I’ll be back Tuesday! Have a great start to your week!!

Question of the day: Do you dye your hair? What colours? I’ve had every colour of the rainbow – including pink, purple, blue, green, orange and fire-engine red :)

  1. That is a HUGH JASS cup of coffee. It’s almost as big as your head, which is amazing! Whoa girl. I need a mug like that.

Also, love the new hair color. I am considering dying mine sometime soon! I’ve never ventured to the edges of the rainbow but I’ve been black, lots of browns, even auburn.

  2. Cup of coffee – now *that* is what I’m talking about! That’s a Lori cup for sure :)

Hope you are feeling better. Glad to hear you are resting up and trying to get better instead of pushing yourself.

Haven’t tried savory oats. I keep meaning to, but then get sidetracked.

I don’t color my hair. I have done highlighting with red and blondes before, but I am just too lazy to keep up with the touchups.

  3. i want your cup of coffee right now – i just drank coffee but could totally go for more :)

love your hair color – its very rich and complements your skin so well. it seems as though the cool thing to do this weekend was dye your hair!

rest up, feel better and relax – i completely agree, better to take it easy now that risk injury later on!

  4. That salad looks absolutely like something I would knock old ladies and young children out of the way to get to. Kidding…kind of. Anyway, glad you’re resting and in some sick way, it makes me feel less anxious about the relaxing, restful weekend I forced myself to have. Rock on.

About the hair…love it. I just went to my “winter hue” in that the blonde highlights are gone and I’m back to a mocha java/reddish tint. I have also been all over the spectrum, from light to orchid (yes, dark purple). Hope you feel better!

  5. Haha, I love your huge coffee mug! Hope you feel better soon. I love that breakfast cookie. It reminds me of a healthier version of those hugh jass M&M cookies at the mall. haha! Your hair looks super cute, too :)

  6. Dude, I’m sitting here wondering “Why don’t I feel it necessary to exercise right now?” All I want to to is take a legitimate rest day (week?!) without beating myself up about it. ;-)

    Hope you feel better soon!

    • Lindsey – take a rest if you want it! In my opinion, it’s better to take a few days off and come back full force, rather than half-ass it because you’re not into it. You’ll get better quality workouts that way :)

  7. I love the hair color!

And that breakfast cookie looks great! A healthy twist on those m & m cookies for sure!

And I think it’s great your listening to your body and resting! My legs have been feeling pretty achy.. I may need to do the same! I hope your hip feels better!

  8. Loving the color!

I’ve done my hair pretty much every color in the book. I am naturally a boring mouse brown. I’ve been blonde, black, dark brown, red. And they all, surprisingly, look good!

  9. I took the whole weekend off blogging because I’ve felt down and out too! Also no exercise. Sometimes you just need a break!

As for hair…I’ve had all colors as well. I like purple best but it doesn’t really work in the accounting world! Right now I color my hair dark brown (which is my real color). I did too many highlights so the ends get real pale if I don’t brown them up every couple of months!

    Hope you feel better soon!

  10. I like the new colour.

Yes, I dye my hair. For the first 29 years of my life I didn’t touch it. I was a natural strawberry blonde and got many compliments. Then I put in a few highlights and so developed my obsessive habit of hair colouring. As I’ve gotten older and my hormones changed after having kids, my beautiful strawberry blonde became a duller, lifeless version of what it used to be. Now I colour it a deeper auburn in the Fall and let it go to my natural red and get highlights and lowlights in the Summer.

  11. Don’t most girls dye? My hair right now has blond highlights but I’ve done red and dark dark brown (ok, black) before too.

Good luck with your long day! I don’t do well with the 10-11 hr work days…I turn into a zombie :-)

  12. So, I’m not supposed to be on the blogs (I’m supposed to be studying, shhh!) but I just had to say I’m so happy that you jumped on the Glee train!!

I highlight my hair to make it blonder than it naturally is. It’s a pretty dark blonde normally but I jazz it up.

Love the savory oat combo you had!

  13. Whoa! Helloooo coffee!

I have naturally light brown hair, and I often dye it chocolate brown! :)

  14. I think I need that mug! I would love to try and make those falafel balls–I’ll have to hunt down the mix!

  15. Your hair looks GORGEOUS. I missed reading your blog! So good to be finally caught up with it all…I need a hair cut…

  16. Glorious falafel!
    I don’t dye my hair…mostly because I’m cheap:)

  17. green? REALLY?! @__o!! Do you have pics? lol.

Ooh I love your coffee mug! Mine is half the size and I have to get up to pour more coffee each time!

  18. I completely agree that rest days are necessary–ESPECIALLY when your body is “talking to you” like yours has with your hip!

Your hair looks great…both the cut and the color! I haven’t colored my hair for years but no one believes me. It’s this weird brassy, red/brown color that looks fake, but it’s always been that way! Sometimes I love it and sometimes I hate it.

So glad you rested and indulged your snackiness, too. You deserve it :)

  19. Love the new hair color! Very sassy and pretty! :)

  20. love you hair susan! and that mug is MONDO!! you falafel just put the “rock the casbah” song in my head!! i havent tried runny yolk in savory oats yet. this is a must. soon. i am not good at making runny yolk eggs though, i always bust them open while cooking and they turn into a scramble! glad you are taking it easy on the hip. i havent worked out since thursday because i am under the weather.. so i feel you on that. i am anxious! i highlight by hair but never have full on dyed the whole head. xoxo

  21. I think that hair color is so flattering on you!! I do color mine – but to keep the grey away. (I started to get some grey hair at 28!)

I hope you feel better soon.

  22. wow- that is a CRAZY mug of coffee. i think i need one.

i used to dye my hair but decided to stop after reading that hair dye isn’t all that kind to the environment. i figured i’d stop for now and then when i start to go grey i’ll probably dye it. i know it is a little hypocritical to start when my hair starts to go grey, but i guess i’m vain :)

i love your new colour- it looks great!
