Food Rules

Happy Hump Day friends! Unless you’re reading this on a day other than Wednesday. Than I guess happy __day :P

So happy I took a rest day yesterday, because I was rarin’ do go for spin class this morning. It was so much fun!! I’ve been dragging during my past few early morning workouts. This morning, I went back to guzzling an iced coffee before heading out the door (after being too lazy to do it these past few times!). I think that, plus being well rested, led to one stellar hour of spinning :)

Of course, the best part about hump day is that it’s also Waffle Wednesday! Pretty sure everyday is Waffle Wednesday at my place, but it’s nice to celebrate regardless :)

My usual waffle + almond butter + yogurt + berries combo. Except today, I french toasted the waffles.

For the waffles, I just zapped a couple frozen ones in the microwave, soaked them in egg whites and pumpkin pie spice and cooked in a frying pan. Holy delish! Dare I say Wednesday is my favourite day of the week? :P

Work was kind of eventful today. I got to witness a mock plane crash at our airport. Except it also involved me standing in the freezing cold for over two hours. Literally, it was around freezing. Brr! I’m still not back to my usual temperature!

I’m still a starvin’ marvin today. I ended up eating a super early dinner.

Chicken breast sandwich. George Forman-ed a chicken breast in Montreal chicken spice, and added it to a bun with laughing cow cheese, tomato and grilled onions and red pepper.

Plus edamame

So fun to eat edamame in the shell!

Dessert was an example of why winter sucks for taking food photos…

A chopped pear, tossed in pumpkin pie spice and cooked in the microwave till soft. Topped with whipped cottage cheese blended with stevia, more spice and coconut.

Ohmygosh!! How come no one ever told me whipped cottage cheese is so freakin good!!!? I just creamed it with my hand blender, and it immediately turned into this thick and delicious treat. True love!

Food Rules

I stumbled across this New York Times feature (can you tell what I do when bored at work?) on reader submitted food rules. All were pretty good, but I saw some favourites I had to share!

I thought it would be fun to share some of my own personal food rules:

  • Eat what you’re craving. Sometimes I crave a big crunchy salad, sometimes it’s something rich and chocolate-y. Either way, so long as it’s an acceptable serving size, and fits into a varied and balanced diet – I eat it!
  • Never get caught starving. Always have back-up snacks on your person! A growling belly will sometimes lead to bad food choices, and is always followed by a yucky feeling.
  • Don’t snack when you need a meal. When I’m hungry, I eat. Sometimes I’m super hungry come 11am. Instead of putting lunch off with a dinky snack, I eat a real meal and feel satisfied for much longer.
  • Start with your protein. Like most people, my mind is very carb-centric. In order to not eat meals consisting of toast and oatmeal, I always start with my protein when meal planning. Tonight for example, I first decided I was going to eat a chicken breast, then went from there.
  • Every meal is a new chance. We’re all human, and sometimes we all splurge more than we mean to. Instead of wallowing in the fact that I ate too many nachos with a piece of cake, I take each meal opportunity to start over. Why wait until tomorrow when you can do it today?
  • Exercise is not an excuse to go all-out. If anything, it should make us more conscious of how we’re fuelling that activity! Believe it or not, it can be pretty easy to eat back 500 calories! (helllooo 5 tbsp of peanut butter)
  • Go with the flow. Food is not something that needs to be constantly controlled. Sometimes you just need to let go and enjoy the food that’s being offered!

What are some of your personal food rules?

  1. Mmmmm….. toast and oatmeal! I would eat that for every meal if I could get away with it.

I do the same thing as you do with decided on the protein base first, then build the meal on that.

And I hate getting caught hungry when I am out. I call that falling off the cliff and I make horrible choices.

    Nice list!

  2. haha i love that you french toasted your waffles. thats gorgeous :) never get caught starving is my best tip too! i get so cranky and then when i do eat, the food doesnt even seem to make a difference!! i turn into a bottomless pit LOL

  3. crazy – you can whip cottage cheese?!?!!? you’ve made a food revelation!

i read that ny times mag article too – i thought it was kinda funny that he chose “don’t yuck someone else’s yum” b/c that’s all he was doing (about highly processed foods)

  4. Yay! I get to read this on Wednesday…our time zones are closer! :D (and my internet has decided to work just as I am falling asleep).

I am trying to break a lot of the unhealthy rules- ie, no eating outside of ‘set’ times (structure is good, panic attacks if dinner is 10 minutes late it not good!). The only rule I am keeping is that each meal needs to contain all food groups- maybe slightly rigid in some circumstances, but when I stray from that, I feel the affects.

  5. If I can’t picture it in a natural state, I probably shouldn’t be eating it!

If I want a steak, I can think of a cow. If I want ice cream, I can think of cream and sugar canes and milk. But if I want Cheetos…can’t picture anything other than machinery and chemicals, so probably not the best choice.

  6. Those are wonderful rules! I love the ‘every meal is a new chance’ one :)

Never get caught hungry/starving is my #1 rule!

  7. Food rules… currently I’m trying to break all of mine. I lost almost 100 pounds, mostly through starving, overexercising, and bulimia but I would like to learn to eat and take care of myself in a way that lets me stay at a healthy weight while actually being healthy. The one I’m currently working on is not being able to eat a meal that is over 200 calories. It always seems to shock me when I see Luna bars eaten as snacks when I still view them as a meal…

I really like the idea of planning your meals around a protein. I’ll have to keep it in mind when I go shopping. :)

  8. French toasted waffles?! They look amazing. I love cottage cheese but have not tried it in whipped form, I must try. I need to work on rule #1 and I’m all over #2!

  9. I completely agree with the when you’re hungry – eat a meal not a snack. If I’m starving, no snacks will cut it. I keep mindlessly eating until I finally eat a real meal!

  10. Ummm Susan.. I’ve been telling you about blended cottage cheese this whole time!! lol It’s so good isn’t it?? If your feeling brave you should try my pumpkin cottage cheese combo ;)

Your rules are great! I always snack throughout the day so I’m never caught starving like you said. If I don’t snack once I start to eat I’ll never want to stop!

  11. I am loving these food rules! In fact, I may print them off for a couple friends of mine! Thanks!

  12. Hee hee, my food rules: Just enjoy! If you truly enjoy what you eat, you really won’t overeat. At least, that works for me. Also, be mindful of what you’re eating, but don’t obsess. It’s great to be responsible for what you’re eating and try to eat healthy, but don’t let it turn into an obsession that can control you. YOU control your food, not the other way round!

  13. I love that idea to pump up the frozen waffles! They never seem to hold me over very long, but I bet that little egg bath would really help! Duh–I told you whipped cottage cheese was that good! Yummy, right? So glad you tried it! I have tons of food rules, but most of them are unhealthy so I’ll reserve those, but I am working on more positive ones, especially the “never get caught starving.” It makes way more sense to have an extra so many calories in a snack than to get home famished and eat three times that many trying to satisfy your hunger.

  14. One of my food rules is when I’m offered a dessert or other food item I give it a rating from 1 to 10 in my head. If it’s not way up there on the number scale I pass.

  15. I love these and posted them on my blog too :) My favorite is #9, “If you’re not hungry enough to eat an apple, then you are not hungry.” So true!
Also love your rule about every meal being a new chance :) It’s a wonderful reminder!

  16. oh! I love your tips! I alwayyyys have emergency snacks in my bag haha because if I’m hungry and I’m with other people I’m going to be a not so friendly friend haha

happy thursday! AND I loveeee your waffles wednesday!

  17. I really like the don’t yuck someone’s yum. This happens to me at work all the time!

I think your rules are very sane and overall great advice!

I love the french toast waffle idea!

  18. love the NY times quotes! i have been seeing those around. ummm your chicken sammie looks delectable – i am a firm believer that caramelized onions make everything better :)

  19. I love all of your rules and try to impliment them into my own thinking. Especially never get caught starving and eat what your craving (actually, I have to work on the last one a bit). I have one food rule I haven’t broken since…childhood – eat breakfast!!!
French waffle toast is pretty genius.

  20. I LOVE your food rules, Susan! I think I need to print them out and tape them to my fridge. The one about exercise and food is a biggie for me as I get more into running :-) and I think the whole “eat what you crave” is super important too because I’ve totally done the whole “sugar-free pudding instead of ice cream….then the ice cream anyway” thing in the past

  21. haha, happy thursday! i still need to french toast waffles. i love the idea. ive never whipped cottage cheese.. ive blended it.. but not whipped. i wonder how i could get it to whip? the rules are great! i too plan most meals around my protein. and i also have the rule to balance my protein/carb/fat.. not always a perfect 40/40/20 but i do want to get some of each in there. also, don’t eat for an hour prior to cardio. this makes me barfy. love to you!

  22. Oh wow, your french toast waffles look fantastic!! Actually your waffles ALWAYS look fantastic but yesterdays batch sound 10x better :)

I love your food rules! They echo a lot of my ideas as well. I always make sure I have a snack with me and NOTHING is ever off limits.

  23. I like the one from NYT, “if it’s a choice between eating some ice cream and obsessing all day about eating the ice cream, I’ll eat the ice cream”. That one hit close to one of my only rules, which is to no longer be obsessive about food. I will also just eat the damn ice cream, if only to end the conflict. I realize maybe it’s counterintuitive, but it keeps my psychology in line.
