Hello blog friends! I am currently blogging from my mother’s living room. It’s fabulous. This guy is currently curled up next to me keeping my feet warm.

Hi Archie!! What my mother doesn’t know is that I’m packing him up in the Focus and bringing him back with me tomorrow ;)

Would you believe it if I told you I got another 8 hours sleep last night? I know! Three nights in a row. That’s a record. I was awake after my usual 6 hours, but was actually able to fall back asleep when I tried to this time. Led to oversleeping, but I’ll take it! :D

Cool-down:
5 minutes stretching

Phew! I was going to tack on abs at the end, but this took me exactly one hour so I decided to call it a day.

Rushed back home and filled my hungry belly with a big bowl of savoury.

100_9567

Savoury oats! I was reeeally craving a bowl.

  • 1/2 cup rolled oats
  • 1 cup water
  • pinch salt
  • 1 tsp Earth Balance
  • 1 breakfast sausage, sliced and stirred into oats
  • 1 fried egg
  • lotsa saaaahlsa

100_9570

Runny eggs are a thing of beauty, right Sophia? ;)

100_9575

I know I harass you guys about this every time, but you really gotta try savoury oats if you haven’t yet!! The protein, fat, and fibre in this dish always holds me over forever. Close to five hours today, which is almost unheard of for me!

My 90-minute drive home was rather boring. I arrived home and my mother popped this wonderful taco dip in the oven for me.

100_9577

It’s a mix of lean ground beef, black beans, kidney beans, homemade salsa and cheese.

While it was heating I prepared this:

100_9579

Which then turned into this:

100_9583

Hm. Looks gross there, but I know you’ll trust me when I say it was delicious ;)

Then I went searching for the Halloween stash. I knew it was somewhere! Found it hiding in the pantry closet.

100_9595

I went for the Reese’s pieces and savoured every little piece.

100_9585

I also arrived home to a house that smelled of turkey! My mom had one roasting in the oven all morning, and we were treated to it this evening.

100_9590

My mom forgot the cranberry sauce, so I put some plum sauce on it instead. We also had stir-fried veggies in a gravy made with soy sauce and mustard. It was delicious!!! And then I swiped a few french fries that were made for the kids.

And I maaaay have attacked the candy stash again for dessert.

100_9594

I like these little chocolate balls because I suck on them until they melt in my mouth. I actually suck on Reese’s pieces the same way too. Makes them last longer!

Now I’m just tucked in with my mom, Mark (her boyfriend, although that term is a little silly applied to their situation. Life partner? Common-law?) and the doggies. I’m just happy to be home and in their company. Tomorrow my mom and I are going to the gym together, then meeting my dad for lunch, visiting my Nana and then Costco!! Woot! See ya after!

Question of the day: What dishes does your mom always make? My mom is famous for her vegetarian chili. She also makes a mean hummus and vegepate :)

I’m not dead! Just dyed.

Good morning! I’d apologize for not posting last night, but to be honest, I’m not that sorry! :P I was feeling c-to-the-rappy yesterday and didn’t want to spread my sickness through blogging.

My sore throat has progressed to a cough, and I got a solid 8 hours of sleep last night (a rare occurrence for me). So things are at least looking up this a.m. I am currently fisting a giant mug of coffee and sporting my new hair colour :)

100_8893

A little less red than I’ve been wearing lately, but no doubt will fade into a red shade anyways. And yes, I do not exaggerate when I say a giant mug of coffee. You can tell my wrist is working hard to hold it up in that picture.

Yesterday was very uneventful. I had to be at work earlier than the usual 5am. I was starving by the time I got to my breakfast cookie.

100_8825

Same mix as last weekend. It’s amazing how long a bag of M&Ms can last when you only eat a few at a time! “Old Susan” would have polished those bad boys off a long time ago… “New Susan” is enjoying savouring them :)

I was very excited to try out a new bar as my snack. For the longest time, we’ve only been able to get the Kashi chewy bars in Canada, but the cereal bars have made their way here!!!

100_8831100_8833
At 120 calories, they’re pretty dinky. Not to mention only 2g of fibre and protein each.

100_8839

I’m not the biggest fan of cereal bars actually, but I thought this was still pretty decent. However, I ate it with a cheese string, and my tummy was growling 90 minutes later. So it doesn’t make for a very sustainable snack.

I dug into my lunch mega early. Thankfully, it was also mega filling and delicious :)

100_8843

Salami, laughing cow, tomato, field greens, mustard on whole wheat bread. The salami is from the market. I was really excited to find it from a safe and healthy source, as the packaged salami in grocery stores is super sketchy. I’m learning that my city’s market is not always the greatest for deals on produce – but it’s awesome for fresh meat!

I also munched on edamame.

100_8847

I find these single-serving packages of edamame in the freezer section of my grocery store. They’re great for packed lunches!

I was a hungry hungry hippo yesterday. A lot of snackage happened that went unphotographed. When I finally broke for dinner, I figured it was time for more kitchen clearing.

I rescued a box of Casbah falafel mix from my very top shelf.

(Recycled photo). I’ve tried many times to make falafel from scratch – but this mix still makes the best kind! Not the best ingredients compared to what I could make at home though. Just add water to the mix, shape into little patties, and bake till hard :)

100_8853

Falafel salad.

  • 6 falafel patties
  • hummus
  • tabbouleh
  • tomatoes
  • red pepper
  • onions
  • field greens

100_8852

Yum! I love me some falafel :) Although, I think this would have been better in a pita… with tzatzkiki…

I spent my evening watching Glee. I’ve been hearing a lot of people talk about this show, but I haven’t caught it on Canadian TV yet, so I downloaded the episodes I’ve missed. So good! Chris stopped by and proceeded to make fun of me for watching it though :P

More snackage occurred, including another kashi bar. This time seven whole grain and almond kicked up a notch with some almond butter.

100_8863

Divine :) I definitely snacked more than I like to yesterday, but I also felt legitimately hungry at times. I just don’t have it in me to not eat when I’m hungry. I was also awake for 20 hours… which I guess gave me plenty opportunity to eat!

I started my morning off today on the right foot with a delicious bowl of savoury oats.

100_8871

  • 1/2 cup rolled oats
  • 1 1/4 cup water
  • 1 tsp Earth Balance spread
  • pinch kosher salt
  • 1 breakfast sausage
  • 1 soft-fried egg
  • salsa

100_8876

Have you tried savoury oats yet?? If not, what are you waiting for!? I think nothing tastes better with soft egg yolks than a creamy spoonful of oats. Yummmmm…

In other news, today is my third rest day in a row. You may recall that I hurt my hip at the gym on Friday, so I took the weekend off all activity. It actually feels pretty good today, but I feel like it’s better to be safe than sorry in cases like these. I much rather take a week off exercise at the first sign of injury, than push it and have to take months off down the road to heal a more serious injury.

I think I need the rest anyways, for the first time in a while, I don’t have an inkling to exercise. I just want to work on getting my hip better, and getting rid of my cold. Then I’ll be able to give it my all when I get back to it :)

I also probably won’t be posting again tonight. I’ve got a 10-11 hour work day ahead of me and I just don’t think I’ll have the energy. I’ll be back Tuesday! Have a great start to your week!!

Question of the day: Do you dye your hair? What colours? I’ve had every colour of the rainbow – including pink, purple, blue, green, orange and fire-engine red :)

Letting it all out

When was the last time you cried? I mean, really cried. Wept, sobbed, shook your shoulders and snotted everywhere…

I did that tonight. It’s been too long since I let it all out. Apparently, I had a lot building in me.

I have to be out of my current apartment before my new apartment is available. I’ve hired movers for Saturday who are too expensive to cancel. I work at 5 am both Saturday and Sunday. There is a very real chance I will have to sleep on the futon in the newsroom.

Both my sisters are in the province this weekend with their significant others. I would love nothing more than to be at our beautiful cottage with my beautiful family this weekend.

My dad and his family are going through rough times. I wish I could be there to help them.

For the first September in my life, I will not have plans to return to school. I am working a permanent job indefinitely. This terrifies me.

The last of my friends has moved away. I am left behind in this city, alone.

As of right now, I am looking forward to:

  • going to the gym in the morning
  • Waffle Wednesday
  • reporting on important trials tomorrow
  • getting my new glasses frames on Thursday
  • swimming for the first time since the triathlon
  • my long run on Friday
  • seeing my mom and one of my sisters on Monday
  • joining a new gym
  • starting my new life in a place to call my own

And what’s life without a little flavour?

100_7137

Savoury oats

  • 1/2 cup rolled oats
  • 1 cup water
  • pinch salt
  • chopped up breakfast sausage
  • fried egg
  • hot salsa
  • mozzarella

100_7143

Mahi mahi in a peach sauce. Pan-fried mahi mahi filet in Bragg’s topped with one chopped peach, onions and plum sauce. Brocolli and brussel sprouts with a little Bragg’s for the side.

Also, do not freeze watermelon then thaw it out. It turns slimy and meaty, and can only be saved in a smoothie.

100_7146

At least it was pretty. 1/2 cup plain yogurt, handful watermelon meat, handful frozen papaya chunks.

When was the last time you cried? What is stressing you out at the moment? What are you looking forward to?

Thankfully, today is over. I’m going to bed and look forward to the brand new day ahead of me. It will be better. My outlook alone will allow that to happen.
