Heyo!!

IMG_2422
Ch-ch-check out the sweet headband I got from Matt at No Meat Athlete. Thanks Matt! You’ve just helped me plump up my future personal trainer wardrobe ;)

Okay, honestly, I had no idea how to start this post, but at least I now have your attention :)

Totally loved hearing all the personal items y’all need with you at work. Hand cream and chapstick were definitely the most popular, with pictures and post-its slightly behind. Although Emily has rubber bands in the shape of zoo animals and Janetha suggested a day-by-day calendar. I was actually quite entertained by the responses!!

In other news, I was up at 5:30 am for spin class today. It was stellar as per usual. I’m actually starting to get to know some of the faces in the class. Not to mention, I feel hardcore in the bike jersey Chris got me for Christmas.

Came back home after to shower and celebrate Waffle Wednesday.

IMG_2381
Two Nature’s Path maple cinnamon waffles topped with a blended ricotta-cashew butter-cinnamon-maple syrup mixture. I was pressed for time, but still managed to get in a fantastic waffle feast :)

Work eats look disgusting, but I promise they were fantastic.

Morning snack was yogurt mixed with vanilla protein powder and strawberries. For lunch I had leftovers a la Leah! I have a fridge next to my office, and I’ve been eating in a cafeteria with a microwave. It feels like such a luxury to have a hot lunch! (how sad is that?). Anyways, it was Indian Cauliflower Stew with added shrimp. Afternoon snack attack was two carrot cake protein squares and a cheese string.

Nothing exciting to report from work. I ran into an old colleague at the drug store after, and he was asking me all about switching from journalism to communications. Or as reporters call it – “going to the dark side.” PR work is a whole different ball game. Totally different than journalism work. I feel like I have so much to re-learn (and forget!).

I bought a can of baked beans a while back after seeing them on Caitlin’s blog so frequently. I suddenly had a hankering for them and eggs for dinner. Breakfast supper of champions.

With an egg scramble. Various veggies from the fridge with cottage cheese and laughing cow cheese. What really made it was the green olives I added. Green olives and eggs are such a fantastic flavour duo!

Dessert…

My three addictions wrapped into one. Date + PB + M&Ms. Times two.

So a while back, I was a recipient of a Beautiful Blogger Award by Averie – a beautiful blogger herself ;) It’s about time I display it proudly!!

blogaward
With the award, I must divulge seven random facts about myself. I’ve done this a few times, but I suppose I can always dig up a few more things to share…

  1. I don’t like wine. I’ve tried, numerous times. But I just never developed the palette for it.
  2. Babies scare me. They’re cute to look at, but please don’t ask me to hold or interact with one.
  3. I refuse to have the colour pink anywhere on my road bike.
  4. A childhood friend died downhill skiing when I was 10 years old. I’ve since developed a fear of ski hills and have only ever done cross-country.
  5. I only own two exercise bras. Instead of doing laundry every day, I often hand wash them in my sink between washes.
  6. The Beatles are my favourite band of all time. You will be “shushed” if one of their songs comes on the radio.
  7. I’m still wearing that headband. It’s keeping my forehead warm!

I must pass this on to seven other bloggers. In order to keep this fair, I randomly picked seven people who commented on my last post. Kinda like a giveaway, except it’s a jpeg and not something you can eat ;)

Lizzy (random.org actually picked you three times!!)
Lisa
Paula
Katie
Jessie
Diane
Angela

Wow, random.org is pretty smart. All totally deserving and beautiful bloggers in my opinion!!

Speaking of smart websites, I urge you to go check out www.cleverbot.com. Ask it something, although the responses aren’t always that clever..

Okee, bedtime! See ya tomorrow!

All Spun Out

Aahhhhh… I gotta tell ya, I never thought I was a 9-5, Mon-Fri person – but I could get used to this weekend thing!! Monday to Friday doesn’t seem so bad when it’s followed by two glorious whole days off! Alas, I don’t think it will happen often working at Starbucks now. I just got lucky :)

I slept in until 8am today. That’s crazy for me, I never sleep that late. I think my body is slowly starting to adjust to not getting up at 4am for work two days a week. I may in fact be taking on normal sleeping patterns.

Yesterday’s breakfast was so good I had it again.

101_1468

Everything bagel with almond butter and strawberry jam with an egg white pillow + laughing cow cheese in the back. Part of the reason I love this so much is because it’s a real bagel!! Usually I buy smaller or “light” bagels. But this week I splurged and bought larger ones and they are so much better. Can’t say I’m surprised ;)

I spent aaallll morning in bed reading blogs, the news and watching the news. I made the mistake of not immediately wrapping up and hiding my baked goodies last night. Two cake balls were consumed before I properly packaged and put them in the freezer. The coconut ones are fabulous, but the Lindt 70% ones are a little too rich. There may have been a turtle pretzel consumed later in the day. Uff round 2.

Inspiration for lunch hit while catching up on Lori’s blog.

101_1479

Egg salad with two whole eggs, laughing cow cheese, mayo. mustard, onion and pickles on toast. Sliced pear on the side.

Then at 2pm I had my special 90 minute RPM spin class!! It was SO much fun!! We had three instructors – all of which were dressed up in Christmas gear. One was wearing antlers and a rudolph nose! The class itself whizzed by. I sipped some Gatorade they provided, but felt I didn’t really need it. I was able to pace myself well enough to hold it through, and ended feeling I worked really hard. Oh yes, and during the cooldown, they passed out Jell-o shots!! Okay, virgin Jell-o shots. So technically just Jell-o in a small cup. But it was still awesome :)

Wasn’t feeling my usual post-workout shake when I got home, so I refuelled with a bowl of yogurt and granola.

101_1484

Coconut chia granola that is ;) I’ve got to start making my own granola more often. I stopped buying cereal to sprinkle on top of things because it usually just gets sprinkled directly into my mouth. But for some reason, I don’t munch on granola.

Dinner was something I’ve been craving foreverbutternut squash soup! Specifically, Wonkeynut Squash Soup.

101_1494
The only change I made, was I added leek instead of the shallots and kale. It’s an incredibly basic soup recipe – that way I can dress it up!! Tonight I added shredded chicken breast, basmati rice, brussel sprouts, cumin & curry spice and maple-cinnamon-cumin almonds. I loooove me a chunky soup, and this turned into more of a “stew” with all the add-ins. It was fabulous! And incredibly filling.

It’s that time of week…

December Goal Check-In Time!

Spend 30 minutes everyday cleaning something in my apartment.
I did this almost every day this week. Although most of it was spent cleaning my kitchen every day! I miss my old dishwasher…

Stop procrastinating.
I did okay at this. Got lots done (Christmas presents) but could have done more (cleaning).

This one is already a giant fail for the month. This will definitely be making a reappearance in next month’s goals.

Read at least one chapter a day from my personal training textbook.
I only got two chapters read, but I did some of my online modules, so it evens out :) Going to make a big dent on it tonight once I finish blogging!

Listen to my body.
I think I may have ignored my body a little this week. Perhaps splurging too much, and tricking myself into thinking I was just “listening to my body.” Working on my feet for eight hours does not justify mass amounts of sugar and chocolate! :P However, I do think my body if finally starting to adjust to all the standing I’ve been doing. My workouts felt much better this week.

Try more recipes.
I did three new ones yesterday :) I’m also taking over Christmas dinner this year. Okay, okay, I’m contributing a few side dishes and dessert. But that’s huge, my mom normally handles the meal all by herself!

Spend less on groceries.
I was doing okay on this until I bought all my baking supplies yesterday. For example, my three batches of turtle pretzels cost approximately $17. That’s not exactly cheap :(

Get a grip.
Okay, so my life is still a little chaotic. But I’m getting there. I’ve got a long list of “life administration tasks” that I’m slowly getting through. Hoping to get all those things checked off in January. Cause, let’s face it, Christmas is in five days. Ain’t nothin’ getting done from now until Jan. 3 :P

I also have to share this one tidbit I heard while listening to a Jillian Michael’s podcast at the gym earlier this week. She took a phone call from a guy who was saying he would give up and totally drop the ball on some days. He said he would get mad at himself for eating a piece of pizza, so then he’d just eat the whole pie.

Jillian used this really great analogy of getting a flat tire. If one tire gets a flat, you wouldn’t get out and slash the other three tires, would you? Well, you shouldn’t do that with your eating/exercise either. I love this way of thinking. I always used to be a “tomorrow” person, but these days I’m a “right now” person. If I made a bad food choice earlier in the day (ahemcakeballsahem) that doesn’t mean my whole day is lost. It just means I should take extra care in choosing my next meal.

I think this is something to remember entering “Christmas week.” Some of us may already by worn out by holiday parties and get-togethers, with no immediate end in sight. Just because we lose it on a plate of sugar cookies, doesn’t mean our good eating intentions for that day are totally lost. So this week, I’m just going to try to make the best choices I can in between the inevitable not-so-great ones ;)

Question of the Day: Monthly goals aside, do you have any goals for this “Christmas Week?” Mine is above. To consciously eat clean foods when I get the chance, but to not stress about it when I don’t. I also reeeeally want to make it to a spin class Boxing Day morning! What do you think those chances are? :P

P.S. Feel free to check out my guest post over on Lara’s blog – Thinspired!

Staying Accountable!

Love all the questions I’m getting! Keep ‘em coming, I’m thinking I’ll do a series of posts answering them this week :)

My body clock got the hint today and let me sleep till 7am. Thank you!! I had spin class at 8:30, so I kept breakfast light.

101_1105

Two Nature’s Path maple cinnamon waffles with peanut butter and strawberry jam on top. Not very photogenic is it? On the bright side, the days are going to start getting longer again after Dec 23. So it soon won’t be dark at 7am anymore!

After a couple days of lacklustre workouts, today’s RPM spin class was just what I needed!! My legs finally felt recovered after my day off work yesterday. One of the instructors showed up to take the class, but ended up hopping up front to help teach it. Can I just say that all the instructors at GoodLife Fitness in Fredericton are awesome? I always talk about my “favourite” ones. But really, I love them all. They’re what make the classes so fun and motivate me to keep wanting to go back!

I was hungry when I came home, so I had a small snack to keep me going till my early lunch.

101_1107 101_1112

Three puny dates stuffed with PB and a PVL Peach Whey Cooler.

I worked 12-5pm today, so I ate lunch before I left.

101_1118
I call this an “egg torta” because it’s just like the ones I ordered when I was in Mexico. Really, it’s just fried eggs (1 whole + 2 whites), cheese, mayo, tomato, onion, sprouts and spinach on a toasted bun. Holy yum. On the side is a sliced braeburn with a healthy dose of cinnamon.

Work wasn’t so bad today. I stuck to the cash register and stayed relatively clean. I had one customer tell me I’m the only barista he’s seen smile profusely while taking an order. I told him it was the endorphins from spin class ;) In my experience, it’s a lot easier to be nice to people than mean or rude to them.

I haven’t been taking pics of my work eats lately, but Clif bars have become one of my new favourite snacks to eat on break. Especially the Carrot Cake flavour.

101_1120

I like them because they’re a little larger than the other bars I usually eat, so they hold me over for longer. I usually go 3-4 hours between breaks at work with lots of activity in between. I need the extra energy! I also had a short skinny vanilla crème today. Basically, 8oz of steamed skim milk with a couple squirts of sugar-free vanilla syrup. For 70 calories, I feel like I’m having a decadent treat :)

For some odd reason, I reeeally wanted chicken stuffed with laughing cow cheese and spinach for dinner. I had to laugh at myself when I lifted the lid on the george foreman grill. I may have been a little too keen and overstuffed just a tad ;)

101_1123
As always though, the messiest dishes are the tastiest!

 101_1138

I had my chicken with some broccoli + cauliflower in Bragg’s and kale chips. Awesome meal! I always combine the foods on my plate. There were a lot of mouthfuls containing all three foods :)

In other food news, I made my first jar of nut butter!!!

101_1144

I knew I wanted my first batch to have maple syrup, which seemed to pair perfectly with the big bag of pecans I conveniently had in my cupboard. I didn’t have the patience to blend it until absolutely smooth. The food processor was starting to get hot and I was getting a headache! I also completely forgot to toast the pecans first. I was just too excited to get started on my first batch. It still turned out absolutely delicious though. My goodness. I licked the food processor clean! Can’t wait to top my oats with some maple pecan butter tomorrow :)

Checking in on those December goals…

Spend 30 minutes everyday cleaning something in my apartment.
I think I did this maybe 5 of 7 days? Not bad! Still not enough to keep my place clean though. I’m like the Tasmanian Devil. I leave a mess behind wherever I go :P

Stop procrastinating.
Again, I didn’t have much time to procrastinate! Any leisure time I took this week was decidedly so. I didn’t spend much time putting stuff off.

I didn’t read anything besides articles this week. Not even Breaking Dawn!

Read at least one chapter a day from my personal training textbook.
I did really good at this one :) I’ve started bringing my textbook to work with me, and getting the chapter read on my breaks. Now I just need to start doing the online work and set up job shadowing…

Listen to my body.
I think I’m doing okay on this. I’ve definitely been eating a little more and not depriving myself. Still trying to figure out how not to exercise when I’m sore from work. I really like working out and get bummed when I can’t do it :(

Try more recipes.
I didn’t follow any recipes this week. I have tons of stuff planned for the holidays though, including making treats for gifts and dishes for Christmas dinner. I’ll get lots of new recipes in at some point!

Spend less on groceries.
I had to do a big grocery haul this week and feel really good about how much I spent. I have a bad habit of picking up everything that looks good to me. But this week I stopped and asked myself if I reeeeally needed 8 different kinds of fruit to get me through the week. I can actually survive on much less than I thought!

Get a grip.
I don’t quite know how to measure this one. But I can say, I am entering this week much more confident than I did last week, or the week before last. I feel like my mind is a lot more clear now that I’m not worrying and stressing about work so much. Going into Starbucks everyday requires no extra thought outside of my shifts. This alone has helped me become a lot more focused and get a sense of order back in my life.

Question of the Day: How are you doing on your goals this month? Anything you still want to achieve in these last couple weeks of 2009? Honestly, I’m just looking to get out of this month alive :P

Don’t forget you can still leave a question for me in the comments or e-mail them to thegreatbalancingact@gmail.com. It can be any sort of question, blog related or not. I’ll even get personal ;) First series of answers will go up on Monday. See ya then!
