A Day in the Life…

In order to keep things “fresh” around here, I’m going to take a page from these fabulous ladies, and do a breakdown of my day for ya. Cause you know, it was just that exciting :P

5:50am – Alarm goes off. What is happening? What day is it? Where do I have to be right now? Did I sleep last night? Sure doesn’t feel like it…

5:52am – *Strapping on heart rate monitor* I need coffee in my system right. now.

6:03am – Grab french press out of the fridge, mix it with some almond mix and stevia, and pound it back with half a banana sloppily slathered in PB.

6:12am – Work bag? Check. Gym bag? Check. Garbage bag? Check. Third arm? I need one of those on garbage days…

6:22am – Briefly smile at the girl working the desk at the gym. She wonders if I’m a crazy person for working out everyday at such an ungodly hour. I wonder if she’s a crazy person for taking a job that has her working at such an ungodly hour.

6:29am – Favourite center-driven elliptical is occupied by the grunting man. Opt for a rear-driven one instead. Start my warm-up.

6:34am – First sprint is always a shock to the system.

6:45am – Heart rate breaks the 170 barrier for the first time this workout. Yesssss!

6:50am – Wish my iPod had one of those beep-y things that portable phones do. Then it would be with me at the gym and not in my apartment… somewhere…

7:05am – Try to row away the DOMS in my back on the rowing machine. Only works when actually rowing.

7:15am – Only 10 minutes on the stepmill. Only 10 minutes.

7:20am – Only 5 minutes left on the stepmill. Just 5 minutes.

7:22am – I’m not gonna make it.

7:25am – I am so sorry legs.

7:28am – I WANT TO LIVE IN PIGEON POSE.

7:49am – Having short hair cuts my shower time down SO much.

8:15am – I have microwave oats, but the door to the room with the microwave is locked. Sneak upstairs to use my bosses’, but I am spotted. Yes, I am cooking brown goop. So what??

8:25am – Chocolate-protein-banana-PB oats just don’t cut it anymore. Where’s my custard oats!?

8:35am – Get called to a meeting. Crap! I’m not done feeding the hunger beast!

9:00am – Start what is becoming a ritual of answering and sending e-mails that usually lasts the whole morning.

10:13am – Even though I’m not hungry, I must break up the monotony of e-mailing. Dig into my bag for a healthy-ish bar.

They kinda taste vegetable-y, but I like it. Plus, you can never go wrong with a chocolate coating ;)

11:04am – The usual lunch posse are all busy today. Anticipate finally cracking open my Google Reader for lunch.

12:10pm – Break down and dig into my lunch bag.

12:57pm – Run downstairs for the first of many university events today. A lecture and performance by a traditional folk singer.

1:22pm – I need more Irish folk music in my life.

2:52pm – Rush back up to my office to eat some grapes and cottage cheese while answering a co-worker’s fitness question (I’m getting so many of these now from friends and family – I love it!)

3:50pm – Rush off to lecture #2 called “What We Talk About When We Talk About Art.”

4:10pm – What I was expecting to be a boring lecture turns out to be hilarious, delivered by a witty and observant British man wearing a black turtleneck.

4:56pm – Rush off to my next event. Pause briefly at a cookie tray set up in the foyer. Keep walking.

5:28pm – Listen to novelist and Giller Prize winner David Adams Richards speak. Intense.

5:55pm – Breeze through apartment door, borderline hangry. Immediately reach for some corn cereal. Nosnackingwhat??

6:12pm – Sit down to supper.

Steamed green beans and red potatoes topped with leftover spicy yves ground round/black bean mix with tomato sauce added to it.

6:27pm – Defeat. Giant plate of food wins. I am. So. Full. How was I so hungry a mere 30 minutes ago??

7:35pm – Rush back to campus to meet coworkers for the Oedipus Rex play. Why am I always rushing? Leaving to go somewhere at a normal speed must be possible…

8:11pm – What on God’s green earth are they saying??

8:33pm – Dude. No. She’s your mom.

9:30pm – Well, that was a cheery way to end the evening.

9:43pm – Get a massive nose bleed for the first time in years. Freak out and Google “Am I dying of cancer?”

10:01pm – Bleeding starts to subside, the fullness of supper long gone. A protein cake sounds like the perfect bedtime snack.

10:16pm – Realize that I have to admit I wrote the majority of this post around 6:45 and am only updating it now.

10:20pm – Hit publish

10:22pm – Obsessively proof read post for spelling and grammatical errors

1024pm – Breakfast, snacks and lunch for tomorrow

10:45pm – Pass out on my pillow, dreaming of Friday morning’s Jillian Michaels workout and another Friday night spent in my peejays reading blogs and watching MTV…

Bites & Nibbles

LOVED reading all the jobs you guys have held. There were some good ones:

  • Brie drove a beer cart on a golf course
  • Heidi is an usher at an amphitheatre where she gets to see concerts for free and even Obama!
  • Deb was a sales person at a large-sized women’s shoe store
  • Jenn decorated cakes at Dairy Queen (I have major respect for this, because my friends and I used to be “those people” who would ask DQ workers to write inappropriate comments on the cakes :P )
  • Angela was a reservation agent for Hooters airline (yes, Hooters, as in the restaurant)

I don’t know why, but I get a kick out of hearing about other people’s random jobs :P

Moving on!

I get a big FAIL for sleep last night. 6-ish hours. I’m usually up several times throughout the night, but last night was bad. Starting at 5am I was waking up every 15 minutes! Boo.

Thankfully, I had some steel cut oats soaking in the fridge. Lori posted a quick cooking method for steel cut oats yesterday. All you have to do is soak the dry oats in the water overnight first, then they’re supposed to cook up much quicker in the pot the next day.

Unfortunately, this did not work for me. Maybe it’s the oats I have? I let them cook on the stove for almost 20 minutes until I couldn’t wait any longer. At least I had the perfect dish to eat them out of :)

I mushed up half a banana in there too because my serving of oats looked so small. There actually wasn’t much almond butter left in the jar. I have a hard time saving a tablespoon’s worth for the morning!

Today is my day off, so I spent the morning in bed watching the Today Show and getting lost in the vastness that is the World Wide Web. My sweet tooth (and belly) kicked in during Regis and Kelly.

These taste kinda weird, like a bar full of vegetables (duh) but I really like it!

I enjoy the crumbly (yet sturdy) texture of the bar and the chocolate on the bottom. The ingredients are pretty darn good too, you can check them out here.

Then the cleaning madness began, and I breaked for a delicious lunch during The View.

Egg salad sandwich and carrot sticks. The sandwich is two whole boiled eggs, mayo, onion, tomato and spinach.

Dare I say egg salad is my favourite kind of sandwich? I’m especially a sucker for the little triangle egg sandwiches at church functions. But nothing beats my Nana’s ;)

I was going to take the day off exercise and just clean today, then yoga tonight. But the sun was shining, and we surpassed our predicted daytime high. The weather was just taunting me to go outside and run! I succumbed. It’s going to start snowing soon, and I probably won’t be able to run outdoors anymore. It’s illegal to run on the roads here (I’m in a very busy spot) and the sidewalks are dangerously icy!

Anyways, I kept it short, doing 5k in 28 minutes. I’m pretty happy with this! I haven’t run just 5k in a while, I’ve been doing a lot of looong and sloooow runs. It was nice to see I’ve been able to maintain a little of the speed I gained in late summer :)

I also whittled my middle when I got home. I’ve been getting quite dizzy lately when I do regular planks. I think it’s from being horizontal with my head down. But it’s concerning enough that I’ve cut it short the past few times. Does this ever happen to anyone else? I’ve been known to faint in the past (although, never when working out) so I get concerned when I start getting so dizzy I’m blurry-eyed.

Also odd, is that running short and fast distances always suppresses my hunger. But I always like to get a little somethin’ in me after a workout, so I snacked on some pumpkin spice roasted chickpeas while I iced.

Unfortunately I did not get back to my cleaning after the run. I knew that would happen! I did however make a wonderful dinner, so that’s something ;)

Shrimp “alfredo.” It’s whole wheat spaghettini, shrimp, broccoli and cauliflower. The sauce is two laughing cow cheese wedges thinned with a liiiittle bit of plain yogurt with some parmesan, pepper, onion powder and teeny pinch nutmeg. Heated in the microwave to melt slightly before tossing it with everything else.

I was really craving shrimp pasta for some reason! Which is weird because I don’t usually care for noodles, and that shrimp has been in my freezer for-ever. It was delicious though, everything I wanted and more ;)

But no meal is complete without a little chocolate.

I nibble away at it so it takes me almost five minutes to eat one piece. Mmmm…

Despite my short run, I really didn’t want to bail on yoga class tonight. I was looking forward to it! One thing I don’t appreciate about the Les Mills classes, is that it’s the same for several weeks at a time. Same songs, same moves. Gets dull after the first three times. But our instructor switched it up a little so it was fun. Hips are appropriately open, hamstrings are adequately stretched :)

Well, that’s just about everything I ate today! There was a handful of soy nuts and a few chocolate chips with my morning coffee, but that about sums it up :) Rare that I ever actually do that. I am about to go make a snack of pita bread and tofu spread so it’s not exactly everything. But you get the gist ;)

 

Questions of the Day:

1. What’s your favourite kind of sandwich? Egg salad here! My Nana also makes these asparagus sandwiches that are deee-licious. I think they’re just canned asparagus (mushiness is optimal) rolled up in bread with margarine and cream cheese.

2. What’s the best thing you ate today? Mine was dinner! But who knows, the snack I’m about to have could knock it out of its place ;)

 

Now I’m off to go log my day’s calories. I haven’t done it since breakfast and it’s going to take soooo long. This tracking thing is getting old pretty quick! But I want to have a week’s worth of numbers before I stop, and it’s only been five days.

Cleaning up and Clearing up

I got my hair did!! Not sure if you can tell by the picture on the side, but my hair was getting looooong. I’m pretty sure the longest parts were midway down my back! I didn’t let it go on purpose. I got a trim before my graduation in May, then forgot all about it!! You can tell where my personal priorities lay – gym first, grooming second :P

I also picked up a medium mahogany brown colour to dye it as well. I’m naturally quite fair-haired, but it washes me out, so I darken it. Don’t worry, I’ll obnoxiously take pictures of that as well :P

On to the day at hand…

As you could probably tell from my post last night, I was not on the top of my game. Thus, no breakfast cookie was prepared before my drug-induced sleep. I slept almost solid because of my handy dandy Nyquil. Reading the news on the radio irritated my throat all morning, but I’m hopeful after another 8-hour coma + rest day tomorrow, I’ll be back to somewhat normal :)

Oh, yes, no breakfast cookie. Breakfast sandwich instead.

Back in my pre-weight loss days, I used to eat a fried egg sandwich for breakfast almost every single day. Except, those old-school sandwiches were made with two whole eggs, thick-sliced old cheddar, huge pieces of “birdseed bread” and lotsa butter along the way. Today’s was dry, with one egg, and a pre-sliced piece of light cheddar. For the most part, I really enjoy my “new” foods. But I gotta admit, this did not live up to its former glory.

I chased it down with an orange, in case you were dying to know :P

I rushed through my early morning tasks so I could head to the farmers market before it got busy. I was there at 7am and it was still pitch dark out!! I think it was a little too early, as not all the vendors were set up. It was pretty slim pickings.

Got back and snacked.

I mean, they taste like they have four servings of fruit and veggies, but I genuinely enjoy it! Put chocolate and peanuts on anything and I’ll like it :)

My afternoon snack featured more market goodies. Homemade smoked herring.

On crackers with laughing cow. The lady I bought this from is known for her smoked salmon, but I bought the herring because it was cheaper. Ohmygodsooogoooood. It was the first time I ever had smoked fish that actually melted in my mouth. Definitely splurging on the salmon next time!

I partnered it with a small McCowan apple.

The vendor told me it was “a very good eating apple.” Which I would have to agree with. Very crunchy inside and out with a nice hint of tartness. It reminded me a lot of a McIntosh.

Aaaaand a quick Google search just told me it’s the child of a McIntosh! Also known as a Macoun. I probably won’t be eating a lot of them though. I bought a big bag which is destined for apple sauce and other baking projects.

Then it was off to the mall to get my hair done. Dangerous location for a hairdresser, as I also did a little shopping after. I swear I really needed that purse and matching wallet!

If there’s one good thing about doing an 8-hour work day so early, is that it allows me plenty of time to prepare dinner after. I decided today was the perfect day to step up to Janetha’s kitchen clearing challenge. While I may not be moving, I do have tons of dried legumes and grains in my pantry that should really be used up. Personally, I prefer getting my grains from bread and oats, so I never feel inclined to cook them with dinner. Plus, I’ve somehow convinced myself that it takes tons of time, which it doesn’t!

Kitchen clearing dish #1: stuffed bell pepper.

  • 1 package Yves Original veggie ground round
  • 1 small onion
  • 1 clove garlic
  • 1/2 jar basil tomato sauce
  • 1/2 tbsp chili powder
  • 1/2 cup dry quinoa, cooked with 1 cup water
  • 2 laughing cow cheese wedges
  • 1 red bell pepper
  • parmesan cheese to garnish

Every single one of those ingredients, minus the cheeses, have been taking up room in my kitchen for-ever! Even the bell pepper, I bought a huge bag of them weeks ago!

Kitchen clearing dish #2: Dazzled carrots with pears and balsamic

This dish was 100% inspired by Zesty Cook, whose original recipe can be found here.

I cut the recipe in half, using about 4 carrots and half a pear. I have a few pears in my fridge that are starting to look sad, so I knew this dish was a must when I saw it! I also didn’t use chicken stock because I don’t have any. Instead, I cooked the carrots in a little water, onion, garlic and parsely, then added the pears and balsamic until my tastebuds were happy. This was a stunning dish – I loved it!

Overall, a delicious meal that I couldn’t even finish.

I would also like to add that the $25 I spent at the market today is the only money I’ve spent on groceries in over 10 days. I need to buy some essentials (*cough* yogurtandcottagecheese*cough*) soon, but I’m pretty pleased with myself. I spend soooo much money on food!

1. What’s your favourite kind of apple? Honeycrisp, galas, and red/yellow delicious :)

2. How often do you get your hair done? I typically only get it cut/dyed every six months. I’m pretty sure that’s too long though! I always get a few horrified looks at the hairdresser :P
