Walkabout

Hellooo… How is everyone’s weekend going? Mine started with work. At 5am. I spent so long going through old pics for Flashback Friday last night that I didn’t have time to prepare a breakfast cookie! So I microwaved oats at work instead…

One packet of President’s Choice multigrain instant oats, 1 cup water, 2 tbsp soy protein powder, cinnamon, shredded coconut, 4 dates, cashew butter. Oats never keep me full on these early mornings for some reason. My tummy was growling less than two hours later. Ohhh the mystery that is my tummy…

Lunch was also microwaved.

Campbell’s herbed chicken with brown rice. I “beefed” it up with some leftover tofu from last night.

It was a crazy busy morning. One of those mornings where I found myself running down the hallways and reading newscasts out of breath. Ahhh…deadlines. I did however find time to scoot on over to the market and get a bounty of goods!!

Despite all my wonderful fresh food, I was having a major hankering for chocolate. So I snacked on a chocolate chocolate chip crisp Myoplex bar.

Well, it was definitely chocolatey! I found it was a little dry and mega rich, but still good. The cinnamon flavour is still my fave!

Oh, and I also had the world’s gooey-est fig.

Bursting with yumminess!! I wish I could find fresh figs around here, I’m curious as to what they taste like…

I’m running a 5k race tomorrow, so I wanted to keep my exercise today light. I opted for a walk downtown so I could pick some stuff up. The weather was gorgeous!

Until I got downtown.

Passed a few familiar buildings, like the courthouse where I spend many days reporting.

And city hall, where many late nights are spent covering council.

Then it was off to Victory Meat Market.

Ironically, I was there to pick up some of their cheap fruit! :P

Cantaloupes for 99 cents. Suh-weet deal.

Then it was off to the Running Room in search of some Gu.

Luckily, I got there just as they were closing, otherwise I would have easily dropped money I don’t have on expensive running gear :P

And my final stop before making the trek back home was Second Cup.

I wanted something to quench my thirst, so I got myself a little treat.

Sugar-free strawberry Italian soda. Basically sucralose in club soda :P

The other wonderful thing about the river route, is there are gorgeous homes on the other side of the road.

I’m partial to this one because I have extended family that used to live there. It’s beautiful (and huge) inside.

And then home!

Overall I covered about 5 miles (8 km) in two hours. Much longer than planned. I live an extra 15 minute walk from my old place, I forgot to factor that in!

I was starving by the time I got home. It’d been a long time since my 10am “lunch.” I threw together a meal made up of my market goodies.

Haha, that cabbage roll looks so gnarly, but it was delicious! It was filled with rice and ground beef. Bought from my favourite Lebanese stand :) There’s also a cucumber salad made up of just cucumber, yogurt, lemon juice, garlic and dill.

Finally, the green stuff! Those are the greens from my beets!! I couldn’t just cut them off and throw them away, especially since there was so much. So I cooked it my favourite way to eat greens, sauteed with garlic, olive oil and parmesan. It was delicious. I couldn’t really distinguish a huge difference from spinach. It’s maybe a little less “tough” and didn’t dry my mouth out like spinach always does.

Dates + cashew butter. This is a combo that was just meant to be. I don’t know what it is but the two flavours compliment each other perfectly, more than peanut or almond butter!

I’m starting to get pumped for my race tomorrow! I kinda feel like a huge loser because I’m doing it all alone. But it’s at 2pm, and I work till 12pm, so I figured I might as well go run it seeing as I’m always working during the morning races. I don’t have any huge expectations as I’ll likely be sleep deprived and coming off a full day of work. I just want to go run my little bottom off and have a good time! :D

Question of the day: What’s your favourite kind of “ethnic” food? I’ll gobble up anything Greek, Lebanese or Moroccan. Yum!

Maid for hire

Anyone out there have green thumbs?

I have a ledge that runs around my apartment, and I thought this window spot would be perfect for plants! Except, I kill everything. Seriously, I killed a cactus last year. Anyways, this is an aloe vera and some funky cactus that I have no idea how to take care of. How often do I water them? I’d like to put some herbs here too…

 

Moving on to the more important things at hand. I had a chocolate macaroon breakfast cookie when I got to work.

I normally don’t photograph it, but my breakfast cookie ritual always includes a hot coffee (I drink it black).

It was a sloooow long-weekend news day. I came prepared though.

Reading material and a liverwurst sandwich with onion and mushrooms. So good!

There was also some bar snackage, a peanut caramel crisp Myoplex Lite.

I like the peanuts on top! I find chocolate chips always fall off and melt on my clothing without my knowing. It’s no cinnamon flavour, but it was still pretty darn good ;)

I snacked and decompressed a little once I got home.

I got a particularly runny jar of PB, perfect for drizzling. That thing on the left is a wasa cracker with raspberry jam and PB.

Once digested I hit up the gym for a little cardio/weights. The people at my new gym are so different than those at my old campus gym. At the university gym, it was mostly people who play on sports teams, girls working off the previous night’s vodka coolers, skinny guys trying to bulk up for said girls, and professors. New gym is almost all fit people. The girls are super hardcore, and the guys are all beefed up. The people who go to the classes are more “normal” I suppose. But it’s definitely a different vibe, not as laid back, but it should at least be motivating :)

I made another fabulous dinner tonight!

My own version of a lentil bulgur salad.

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup dry lentils
  • 1 cup dry bulgur
  • 1/2 pint cherry tomatoes
  • 1 tomato, chopped
  • 1/2 onion, chopped
  • 1/2 green pepper, choped
  • 1 garlic clove, minced
  • 1/4 cup feta cheese
  • 1/4 cup fresh basil
  • 2 tbsp lemon juice
  • 1 tsp olive oil

I cooked the lentils and bulgur together, let it chill in the fridge for a while, then stirred in the rest of the ingredients.

I ate 1 1/2 cups of it on top of some massaged kale.

And homemade pita chips on the side with baba ghanoush. Pita chips are so easy to make. I just cut up a pita, sprayed some olive oil on it with a little barbecue seasoning at baked at 350 F for maybe 5 minutes.

After hearing Jenna rave about this chocolate for so long, I had to try it! It did not disappoint…

I love how I was complaining about salty food yesterday, then bought salty chocolate today :P There is only one time when salty is acceptable – when it’s paired with sweet!! :D

 

Unfortunately, putting two plants on the ledge has been the only work I’ve done on my apartment today. I’ll probably get a little done before bed, but today has not been as productive as yesterday. In order to keep on top of my household duties, I’ve designated cleaning days on my Google Calendar.

For example, Sundays will be a laundry day paired with cleaning my closet. Then Mondays will be my vacuum day, etc. This way I can’t procrastinate and it’ll get done! Hopefully it will save me time in the long run as well. My strategy before has always been to let everything get messy then spend my days off cleaning it :P

That was fun! I have a surprising number of pre-blog food photos on my hard-drive. Guess I’ve always been a little weird that way ;)

I hope you all continued to challenge yourself a little and celebrate your accomplishments today :) I challenged myself as soon as I got out of bed. First, I prepared with some PB + banana + toast.

I also guzzled back a bunch of iced coffee and water before heading out under dark skies for my 70 minute run. Anyone else bummed the sun is rising later now? It wasn’t up till 6:45 this morning. I don’t mind running in the dark, but it’s cold before the sun comes up!

Not gonna lie, today’s run wasn’t as easy as my other long ones have been. I can’t complain though, I can’t expect all of them to be flawless. One thing that made it harder is that I changed my intervals to 10 minutes running, one minute walking. I’ve been slowly increasing the length of my running intervals as I also increase the time of my overall runs. But I was just not feeling these intervals. I think 9:1 may be my magic number. Ain’t nothin’ wrong with that!

I also have to mention that I learned how to snot rocket today! Haha. Monica’s recent post on how she deals with her snotty nose on runs got me thinking about it. I forgot my usual kleenex today and started cramping up because I couldn’t breathe properly. Desperate times call for desperate measures people! So I took a deep breath and snot shot like a pro. It helps that I run on deserted trails :P

 

To finish off my Waffle Week I went for a savoury wafflewich a la Tay.

Two eggs, 1/2 an Yves veggie chicken burger and salsa on maple cinnamon waffles. Unfortunately, this wasn’t as amazing as I thought it was going to be. I’ve done eggs and syrup on these waffles before, which was awesome. But I wasn’t really feeling the salsa with the sweet flavour, and the salsa made them soggy! Next time, I’ll make this on unflavoured waffles ;)

I was super excited for my morning snack today. I packed one of my new cinnamon roll crisp Myoplex Lite bars.

One word – foodgasm. Let me explain. I used to eat these Quaker oatmeal-to-go brown sugar & cinnamon bars that were basically one of my favourite things ever. But they sort of fell out of my diet as I changed my eating habits. To be honest, I’d completely forgot about them until I bit into this bar today. It tastes the exact same. I’m in love.

Moving on… I tried a new combo in my lunchtime pita.

Hummus + cottage cheese. Lovely. Those of you with texture issues may be iffy about it, but garbanzos and cottage cheese were meant to be.

Hahahaha. I know, I know. They were having a barbecue out back at my office. I knew my over 7 mile run deserved a treat today, so why not a hamburger and piece of chocolate fudge? The burger was meh, you could tell it was cheap meat. That piece of fudge though was soooooo good. *droooool* 

It wasn’t exactly the most substantial dinner, so I had a snack when I got home.

I had big plans of unpacking everything in my closets tonight, but my bedtime has snuck up on me! I’m working at 5 am every day this long weekend. I’m actually looking forward to it, my afternoons off will give me a chance to finish unpacking and get to decorating!

Today’s random Q’s…

Those of you with food blogs, have you always taken pictures of food? I guess I have! It actually comes pretty naturally to me, especially after studying TV and photojournalism. I just love playing with cameras :)

How do you feel about snot rockets? One of the first things Chris told me when I started cycling was that I had to learn how to do it. I thought he was super gross for suggesting it. Guess I’m just h-core now :P
