Staying Accountable!

Love all the questions I’m getting! Keep ‘em coming, I’m thinking I’ll do a series of posts answering them this week :)

My body clock got the hint today and let me sleep till 7am. Thank you!! I had spin class at 8:30, so I kept breakfast light.

Two Nature’s Path maple cinnamon waffles with peanut butter and strawberry jam on top. Not very photogenic is it? On the bright side, the days are going to start getting longer again after Dec 23. So it soon won’t be dark at 7am anymore!

After a couple days of lacklustre workouts, today’s RPM spin class was just what I needed!! My legs finally felt recovered after my day off work yesterday. One of the instructors showed up to take the class, but ended up hopping up front to help teach it. Can I just say that all the instructors at GoodLife Fitness in Fredericton are awesome? I always talk about my “favourite” ones. But really, I love them all. They’re what make the classes so fun and motivate me to keep wanting to go back!

I was hungry when I came home, so I had a small snack to keep me going till my early lunch.

Three puny dates stuffed with PB and a PVL Peach Whey Cooler.

I worked 12-5pm today, so I ate lunch before I left.

101_1118
I call this an “egg torta” because it’s just like the ones I ordered when I was in Mexico. Really, it’s just fried eggs (1 whole + 2 whites), cheese, mayo, tomato, onion, sprouts and spinach on a toasted bun. Holy yum. On the side is a sliced braeburn with a healthy dose of cinnamon.

Work wasn’t so bad today. I stuck to the cash register and stayed relatively clean. I had one customer tell me I’m the only barista he’s seen smile profusely while taking an order. I told him it was the endorphins from spin class ;) In my experience, it’s a lot easier to be nice to people than mean or rude to them.

I haven’t been taking pics of my work eats lately, but Clif bars have become one of my new favourite snacks to eat on break. Especially the Carrot Cake flavour.

101_1120

I like them because they’re a little larger than the other bars I usually eat, so they hold me over for longer. I usually go 3-4 hours between breaks at work with lots of activity in between. I need the extra energy! I also had a short skinny vanilla crème today. Basically, 8oz of steamed skim milk with a couple squirts of sugar-free vanilla syrup. For 70 calories, I feel like I’m having a decadent treat :)

For some odd reason, I reeeally wanted chicken stuffed with laughing cow cheese and spinach for dinner. I had to laugh at myself when I lifted the lid on the george foreman grill. I may have been a little too keen and overstuffed just a tad ;)

101_1123
As always though, the messiest dishes are the tastiest!

 101_1138

I had my chicken with some broccoli + cauliflower in Bragg’s and kale chips. Awesome meal! I always combine the foods on my plate. There were a lot of mouthfuls containing all three foods :)

In other food news, I made my first jar of nut butter!!!

101_1144

I knew I wanted my first batch to have maple syrup, which seemed to pair perfectly with the big bag of pecans I conveniently had in my cupboard. I didn’t have the patience to blend it until absolutely smooth. The food processor was starting to get hot and I was getting a headache! I also completely forgot to toast the pecans first. I was just too excited to get started on my first batch. It still turned out absolutely delicious though. My goodness. I licked the food processor clean! Can’t wait to top my oats with some maple pecan butter tomorrow :)

Checking in on those December goals…

Spend 30 minutes everyday cleaning something in my apartment.
I think I did this maybe 5 of 7 days? Not bad! Still not enough to keep my place clean though. I’m like the Tasmanian Devil. I leave a mess behind wherever I go :P

Stop procrastinating.
Again, I didn’t have much time to procrastinate! Any leisure time I took this week was decidedly so. I didn’t spend much time putting stuff off.

I didn’t read anything besides articles this week. Not even Breaking Dawn!

Read at least one chapter a day from my personal training textbook.
I did really good at this one :) I’ve started bringing my textbook to work with me, and getting the chapter read on my breaks. Now I just need to start doing the online work and set up job shadowing…

Listen to my body.
I think I’m doing okay on this. I’ve definitely been eating a little more and not depriving myself. Still trying to figure out how not to exercise when I’m sore from work. I really like working out and get bummed when I can’t do it :(

Try more recipes.
I didn’t follow any recipes this week. I have tons of stuff planned for the holidays though, including making treats for gifts and dishes for Christmas dinner. I’ll get lots of new recipes in at some point!

Spend less on groceries.
I had to do a big grocery haul this week and feel really good about how much I spent. I have a bad habit of picking up everything that looks good to me. But this week I stopped and asked myself if I reeeeally needed 8 different kinds of fruit to get me through the week. I can actually survive on much less than I thought!

Get a grip.
I don’t quite know how to measure this one. But I can say, I am entering this week much more confident than I did last week, or the week before last. I feel like my mind is a lot more clear now that I’m not worrying and stressing about work so much. Going into Starbucks everyday requires no extra thought outside of my shifts. This alone has helped me become a lot more focused and get a sense of order back in my life.

Question of the Day: How are you doing on your goals this month? Anything you still want to achieve in these last couple weeks of 2009? Honestly, I’m just looking to get out of this month alive :P

Don’t forget you can still leave a question for me in the comments or e-mail them to thegreatbalancingact@gmail.com. It can be any sort of question, blog related or not. I’ll even get personal ;) First series of answers will go up on Monday. See ya then!

BodyFlows and BodyShapes

I finally, finally, slept for over eight hours last night. It’s been weeks since I’ve had more than seven. It was glorious. There was no other way to celebrate than by pulling out this bad boy.

100_7585

My belgian waffle maker :)

I ended up with a delicious stack, using my protein pancake recipe, topped with an “easy berry cobbler” of sorts.

100_7592
I just put leftover berries in the muffin tins yesterday and cooked them with an oatmeal/cinnamon/honey mix. This totally hit the spot. I love my day off feasts!

I got in some quality Regis & Kelly time this morning, while unpacking my last box! Yay! I’ll be taking my tour pictures tomorrow when the natural light is best :)

I breaked for a delicious lunch…

100_7600

Liverwurst and laughing cow cheese on a bun with carrots + hummus and my po’ man’s version of a caprese salad, with laughing cow. Mind you, it was crazy delicious. This is one of my market heirloom tomatoes. It was melt-in-your-mouth good. Sometimes life doesn’t get better than a deliciously fresh tomato ;)

After digestion, I did something I haven’t done in fore-ever. Okay, since August 17th (thank you blog archives!). I went for a bike ride!

To be perfectly honest, I wasn’t doing a lot of biking a) because I hated carrying it up and down the four flights of stairs in my old apartment, and b) I get scared on it! I can only ride on busy, high-speed roads with little to no shoulder.  I’m still not confident enough on my bike to feel safe on it all the time. Especially in traffic, when I have to unclip at intersections, turn left, etc.

Anyways, I went at a low-traffic hour today, which helped. Once I got on the bike I was immediately filled with all those happy endorphins again and loved every minute of it.

Until… I hit the hill. My new place is on a hill. I have two road options to get back up, so I took the one that I’ve done before and already knew I could finish. Oh. Man. I think I’m a little out of cycling shape because it was so hard. BUT I pushed through…going at 9km/hr :P In all, I did 24 km in 60 minutes.

When I came home, I realized a green smoothie had grown in my absence.

100_7610

My aloe vera is already crumbling just by being in my presence. Definitely should have gone for fakes…

100_7612

It was my usual Vega combo, 2 scoops Vega Smoothie Infusion, 1 box One Coconut Water, 1 cup frozen papaya chunks.

Dinner was another attempt at kale chips. This time with a lot less salt and a touch of paprika.

100_7616

Dipped in baba ghanoush.

100_7620

Muuuuch bettah :) I also had some leftover lentil and bulgur salad.

Tonight, I tried out the BodyFlow class at my new gym. I really liked it! You can check out what a typical class looks like here. It’s a mix of tai chi, yoga and pilates. The tai chi was just the warm-up, with mostly yoga, and a little pilates ab work in the middle. There were lots of hip openers which I loooved, as my hips are one of my “trouble spots.” The tai chi was… interesting. I’m not sure if I’m coordinated enough for it.

Post-BodyFlow snack:

100_7623

Fibre tarts with some Abu on top (a mix of almond butter and almond milk). Nomnomnom. Pretty filling from all the fibrousness :)

Now I just want to make this post a touch longer by talking about something I’ve learned over my weight-loss/health journey. It’s embracing my body shape. You see, I’m an apple. I’m big around the belly, and have long, thin limbs that stick out of it.

I had always been envious of women who carry their weight in their butt and thighs. They can put on a few pounds, and still maintain this itty bitty waist and still fit into their pants. I put on three pounds, and my jeans no longer button.

I’ve never been “curvy.” My thick middle has always given me rectangular measurements (ie my chest, waist and hips are all very similar sizes).

I always thought that my body would transform into this dream shape when I lost those extra 30 lbs. Instead, it looked the exact same, just smaller. Weight lifting definitely helped change this a lot. But even that won’t change my body shape.

I write about this because I am finally in a place where I fully except the body I have. So what if my tummy is plump? My legs are lean, arms free of flab, and chest perfectly pert. I may never drop jaws in a bikini, but I will rock a miniskirt like nobody’s business :P

So my question of the day is: What body type are you? What are the good attributes of it?

Also, Lara wrote a wonderful post today on losing those last 10 vanity pounds that is worth a read!!

See ya tomorrow for a tour of my new place :D

The Saturday Market

Happy weekend everyone! I’ve been workworkworking away. ‘Tis the tale of my weekends. But worry not, I’ll be livin’ up on my days off mid-week when all you normal folks are back at it ;)

Last night was my first “early night” in the new place. Ugh. Chris text messaged me and woke me up at 9:30, then the people upstairs started vacuuming at 10 pm. Needless to say, it was not awesome.

You may have heard me complain in the past about working every Saturday morning during our city’s Farmer’s Market hours. Well, a co-worker gave me the great idea of rearranging some of my work tasks in the morning to clear up time to go. Genius!

I really wish I’d taken pictures today, but I was too focused on getting food and back to work on time. So I present you with photos taken circa March 2008 for a photojournalism project I did on the vendors of the Fredericton Boyce Farmers Market.

That was fun actually! Brings me back to when I shot these photos. All super nice people. That old lady just warms my heart. Also, that juice man refused to stop juicing so I could take his picture. He was in “the zone” I guess…

Anyways, here’s my loot!

100_7458

  • Plums
  • Kale
  • Heirloom tomatoes
  • Blackberries
  • Purple potatoes
  • Zucchini
  • Basil100_7460
  • Pita bread
  • Dolmadas (stuffed grape leaves)
  • Baba ghanoush
  • Smoked liverwurst

I actually went there with the goal of getting smoked salmon, but I came across this liverwurst and remembered loving it when I was a meat eater.

100_7467
Immediately brought me back to eating it on crusty bread when my family and I travelled around Germany and Western Europe. Yum!

The other items were bought at the Lebanese stand, which is always my favourite at any market. The baba ghanoush is the good stuff, made with eggplant and tahini, and not eggplant and mayo like many store bought varieties.

100_7464

Kinda like the eggplant’s version of hummus :)

I put many of my market goodies to use for dinner.

100_7469

Lets get a little closer, shall we?

100_7472

I stuffed a chicken breast with baba ghanoush and grilled it on my new George Foreman. Then I finally tried some of Kath’s kale chips. I tossed kale in a little olive oil, kosher salt and parmesan then baked at 350 F for about 15 minutes. They really did turn out crispy! Except, I accidentally over-salted, and didn’t end up eating them. I should have known better, I don’t like salty foods!

I did however eat these up, plus some :)

100_7481

I was pleased to find a few chickpeas in there! I dipped them in plain yogurt and went back and got the two extra ones since I didn’t eat my kale. Sosososo good. My dad used to buy Lebanese food at my hometown market., so I grew up loving this stuff. My mom always joked he was having an affair with the old lady who was Lebanese vendor :P

While not eating (or having power naps) I spent the day cleaning and unpacking. I didn’t realize how much I still have left to do, even though all the important items are unpacked. I started decorating too!

100_7488

This one’s for Janetha’s roommate who also loves elephants! That’s just a snippet of my elephant statue collection.

Some of my favourite art…

100_7489

100_7490

I have a rule that I only hang prints of paintings I’ve seen. Impressionism is my favourite, so I’ve always gone out of my way to check out exhibits when they come here or when I’m travelling. I’ve got way more too, but you’ll have to wait until the official tour ;)

It’s no secret that I’m a messy person. So I want to work really hard to keep my new place clean. Health comes from many places, including the environment you live in. So want to surround myself with things I love and treat them well!

Question of the day: What are some of your favourite items in your home? Obviously, I choose my prints. But I also love having my instruments on display, music makes me happy!

And with that, it’s my bedtime. One of my neighbours is playing club music. Ugh. I may have to invest in earplugs…

Nightynight!
