A Day in the Life…

In order to keep things “fresh” around here, I’m going to take a page from these fabulous ladies, and do a breakdown of my day for ya. Cause you know, it was just that exciting :P

5:50am – Alarm goes off. What is happening? What day is it? Where do I have to be right now? Did I sleep last night? Sure doesn’t feel like it…

5:52am – *Strapping on heart rate monitor* I need coffee in my system right. now.

6:03am – Grab french press out of the fridge, mix it with some almond mix and stevia, and pound it back with half a banana sloppily slathered in PB.

6:12am – Work bag? Check. Gym bag? Check. Garbage bag? Check. Third arm? I need one of those on garbage days…

6:22am – Briefly smile at the girl working the desk at the gym. She wonders if I’m a crazy person for working out everyday at such an ungodly hour. I wonder if she’s a crazy person for taking a job that has her working at such an ungodly hour.

6:29am – Favourite center-driven elliptical is occupied by the grunting man. Opt for a rear-driven one instead. Start my warm-up.

6:34am – First sprint is always a shock to the system.

6:45am – Heart rate breaks the 170 barrier for the first time this workout. Yesssss!

6:50am – Wish my iPod had one of those beep-y things that portable phones do. Then it would be with me at the gym and not in my apartment… somewhere…

7:05am – Try to row away the DOMS in my back on the rowing machine. Only works when actually rowing.

7:15am – Only 10 minutes on the stepmill. Only 10 minutes.

7:20am – Only 5 minutes left on the stepmill. Just 5 minutes.

7:22am – I’m not gonna make it.

7:25am – I am so sorry legs.

7:28am – I WANT TO LIVE IN PIGEON POSE.

7:49am – Having short hair cuts my shower time down SO much.

8:15am – I have microwave oats, but the door to the room with the microwave is locked. Sneak upstairs to use my bosses’, but I am spotted. Yes, I am cooking brown goop. So what??

8:25am – Chocolate-protein-banana-PB oats just don’t cut it anymore. Where’s my custard oats!?

8:35am – Get called to a meeting. Crap! I’m not done feeding the hunger beast!

9:00am – Start what is becoming a ritual of answering and sending e-mails that usually lasts the whole morning.

10:13am – Even though I’m not hungry, I must break up the monotony of e-mailing. Dig into my bag for a healthy-ish bar.

They kinda taste vegetable-y, but I like it. Plus, you can never go wrong with a chocolate coating ;)

11:04am – The usual lunch posse are all busy today. Anticipate finally cracking open my Google Reader for lunch.

12:10pm – Break down and dig into my lunch bag.

12:57pm – Run downstairs for the first of many university events today. A lecture and performance by a traditional folk singer.

1:22pm – I need more Irish folk music in my life.

2:52pm – Rush back up to my office to eat some grapes and cottage cheese while answering a co-worker’s fitness question (I’m getting so many of these now from friends and family – I love it!)

3:50pm – Rush off to lecture #2 called “What We Talk About When We Talk About Art.”

4:10pm – What I was expecting to be a boring lecture turns out to be hilarious, delivered by a witty and observant British man wearing a black turtleneck.

4:56pm – Rush off to my next event. Pause briefly at a cookie tray set up in the foyer. Keep walking.

5:28pm – Listen to novelist and Giller Prize winner David Adams Richards speak. Intense.

5:55pm – Breeze through apartment door, borderline hangry. Immediately reach for some corn cereal. Nosnackingwhat??

6:12pm – Sit down to supper.

Steamed green beans and red potatoes topped with leftover spicy yves ground round/black bean mix with tomato sauce added to it.

6:27pm – Defeat. Giant plate of food wins. I am. So. Full. How was I so hungry a mere 30 minutes ago??

7:35pm – Rush back to campus to meet coworkers for the Oedipus Rex play. Why am I always rushing? Leaving to go somewhere at a normal speed must be possible…

8:11pm – What on God’s green earth are they saying??

8:33pm – Dude. No. She’s your mom.

9:30pm – Well, that was a cheery way to end the evening.

9:43pm – Get a massive nose bleed for the first time in years. Freak out and Google “Am I dying of cancer?”

10:01pm – Bleeding starts to subside, the fullness of supper long gone. A protein cake sounds like the perfect bedtime snack.

10:16pm – Realize that I have to admit I wrote the majority of this post around 6:45 and am only updating it now.

10:20pm – Hit publish

10:22pm – Obsessively proof read post for spelling and grammatical errors

1024pm – Breakfast, snacks and lunch for tomorrow

10:45pm – Pass out on my pillow, dreaming of Friday morning’s Jillian Michaels workout and another Friday night spent in my peejays reading blogs and watching MTV…

Fant – ab – ulous

Hello!! Hope you all had fantabulous weekends :) I always feel so weird writing weekend posts, because I’m speaking to people who mostly had the days off. But I’m smack middle in my work week!

It was a slow news day, my only assignment was to clean the newsroom. Wow. I don’t think it’s been cleaned since the introduction of computers…

I came home tired and hungry, so I decided to satisfy my hunger first. With a parfait!

I don’t like wine, so it was nice to find a use for my wine glasses :)

It had a blueberry bran vitamuffin, peanut butter, blueberry jam and yogurt.

Baaahhh, soooo good!! I just sort of plopped little bits of PB and jam as I layered the muffin and yogurt. Every bite was different and delicious!

Then I promptly passed out for two hours. These early morning shifts still really tucker me out. My body just can’t get used to them!

After navigating my way out of a post-nap fog (and a banana), I went to the gym. Weekend afternoons at the gym are so chill. It’s so easy to just whittle away my day playing around on the equipment. Actually, that’s exactly what I did :P

It’s been a while since I did some serious core work, so I wrote down ab circuits to do, inspired by April’s total core workout.

I’m a total nerd and often bring cheat sheets to the gym with me. If I’m trying out new moves, I’ll write down descriptions so I don’t flub up and get the form wrong!

Anyways, here’s what I did:

  • 15 minutes on the elliptical, increasing resistance every 2 minutes
  • Middle ab circuit (x3)
  • 10 minutes on the rowing machine
  • Oblique circuit (x3)
  • 10 minutes on the stepmill, increasing then decreasing speed
  • Challenge ab moves
    • two 90-second planks
  • 10 minutes running on the treadmill, increasing speed every 2 minutes
  • 5 minutes walking on treadmill

With stretching after, I was at the gym for over an hour and a half! Whoops.

I was staaaarving by the time I got home. So I just threw a bunch of stuff in the oven so it would be ready for when I got out of the shower :)

Then some green beans, mushrooms and onions with a little Bragg’s.

Deeeelicious!! My favourite parts were actually the mushrooms and onions. They make such a mean combo when cooked!

I’m still pretty hungry though. This was eaten at 7pm, and my “lunch” was at 10am, with a couple snacks and a long ass workout in between. I find I need a substantial meal every few hours. Now I feel like I just can’t get satisfied!

Well that wraps it up for me. Regardless of my afternoon coma, I’m still exhausted! I want to be nice and chipper for my step class tomorrow. Ohthatsright. I’m going back!

Question(s) of the day:

1. What’s your favourite time to go to the gym? Definitely love my weekend afternoons! I used to go on Friday nights which was a lot of fun. My least fave is after work. It’s when it’s the busiest and just seems like no one wants to be there.

2. What are some of your favourite ab moves? I used to hate the plank, but I love challenging myself with it now. I also really like the Pilates “roll up.”

Ellipticized

Hey guys! Hope you all had awesome weekends :) Mine was dull. That’s how it goes when you work every Saturday and Sunday I guess…

I just wrote a whole big spiel about how stressed I am at the moment and then deleted it. I’m sure you don’t want to hear that. Just know that a number of factors are making this week’s move way more difficult than it has to be, and that working 9 days in a row is not making matters any easier! I’m pooped!

Now, how bout some eat highlights?

Yesterday’s popsicle experiment was a grand success!!

It’s a frozen PVL cran-raspberry whey cooler. A protein popsicle if you will ;) One of these bad boys clocks in at 10 calories and 2g protein. It was a little watered down in frozen form though, next time I’ll make the mix a stronger.

I also experimented with some new flavours in my breakfast cookie today.

Apple cinnamon breakfast cookie.

  • 1/2 cup rolled oats
  • 1/4 scoop vanilla whey powder
  • 2 tbsp unflavoured soy protein powder
  • lotsa cinnamon
  • few shakes pumpkin spice
  • 1 tbsp almond butter
  • raisins
  • dried apple pieces
  • Splash almond milk

This flavour was inspired by Janetha who reminded me that cinnamon is my favourite flavour. Next time, I’ll take it up a notch and use a scoop of applesauce instead of almond milk for my “liquid.”

We were supposed to get a hurricane today, and I am very disappointed in the lack of both rain and wind. I still played it safe and brought my workout indoors.

Warm-up:
15 minutes on the elliptical, increasing the resistance every 2 minutes

A1 – Deadlift:
3 sets @ 60 lbs x 10

B1 – Incline dumbbell shoulder press:
3 sets @ 20 lbs ea x 10

B2 – Step-up:
3 sets @ 25 lbs ea x 10

C1 – Single-leg Romanian deadlift:
3 sets @ 20 lbs ea x 10 each leg

C2 – Bent-over dumbbell row:
3 sets @ 20 lbs ea x 10

D1 – Hip bridge:
3 sets @ bw x 15

D2 – Prone jackknife:
3 sets @ bw x 10

E1 – Plank:
1 set @ 2 min

HIIT:
15 minutes on elliptical, 1 minute intervals, 2 minutes recovery.

Cool-down:
Stretching

Recovery drink:
Papaya Peach Mango

  • 1 scoop Iso Lean peach mango whey powder
  • 1 cup almond milk
  • 1 cup frozen papaya chunks
  • 2 scoops plain yogurt

This was soooo thick and delicious. Kinda like a fruity ice cream without the cow’s cream funk taste!

I tried to switch up my ellipticizing today, but it didn’t quite work. I’m told ellipticals are miracle machines that are low-impact and easy on your muscles and joints. Except, most ellipticals are the opposite for me. The best I can think of is that my freakishly long legs don’t match the range of motion of most machines, so I end up straining my knees more by forcing them to move unnaturally.

Anyways, the one machine that works for me is the Reebok Body Trec.

It sort of simulates running, but almost feels like cycling standing up. Plus, my knees don’t scream at me on this thing, which is always good ;)

But in the past few days, I’ve heard about the Cybex Arc Trainer from both Anne and Lynn. So I figured I’d give it a shot!

Ow. No-go on the knees. It was such a weird motion! Sort of like a Gazelle, but more forward reaching and circular moving. I spent two minutes on it until I moved back to my trusty Trec. And least I tried, right?

 

By the time I showered and such, Chris showed up. So we just decided to head out to our friendly neighbourhood pub (ie The Lunar Rogue) so I could get dinner. I played it safe with a grilled chicken Greek salad.

Dressing and feta cheese on the side. If I had to choose a favourite salad, I think it’d be a toss up between Greek and spinach.

Chris ordered some hot boneless chicken wings.

I tried a bite of these and liked them much better than the boned variety. Still don’t care for the buffalo sauce though. I did however enjoy more than a couple of those tortilla chips ;)

After supper, Chris and I partook in one of our favourite evening activities – a stroll through the downtown.

Chris totally called me out for taking the picture because I was wearing my contacts. Dammit! Must get less clever boyfriend… :P

Alrighty, it’s my bedtime. Want to get some quality zzz’s in so I can pound out a 5k in 27 minutes tomorrow morning. Not sure if it’s possible, but I’m gonna try!
