Things I Learned The Month That Wasn’t

  • I’ve been working a little too hard lately. Something that is easy to do when you genuinely love both your jobs. But I’ve lost all work/life balance.
  • New running shoes make me want to run all. the. time.

  • Candy makes the world go round…
  • …and beer makes everything better.
  • If I don’t pay attention, whole months can pass by without my notice. I need to be more present and less preoccupied.

IMG_2920

  • I miss my mom and feel homesick more than I admit.
  • I’m still young and allowed to be a little reckless sometimes. That includes booking tickets for the Foodbuzz Festival in San Francisco on a whim!

IMG_3160

  • The only thing better than candy is candy baked into a cookie

IMG_3157

  • Except Tootsie Rolls and caramels DO NOT bake well. Holy candy explosion in my oven.
  • My cellphone is my lifeline and living without it is difficult!
  • I have absolutely no desire to do any form of journalistic work at the moment. The thought of deadlines and story meetings make me feel short of breath.

  • I will however dress up as a journalist for Halloween. My idol, April O’Neil from the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles cartoon circa 1990.
  • B vitamins and Gatorade really do help a hangover.
  • I’m really bad at settling down and feel like I need to be in a constant state of “unsettled.” Instead of fighting this desire, I think it’s time I embrace it and just go wherever the wind takes me!

Question of the Day: What did you learn in October?

Bonus question: Did you dress up for Halloween?

Home Cookin’

Hello blog friends! I am currently blogging from my mother’s living room. It’s fabulous. This guy is currently curled up next to me keeping my feet warm.

Hi Archie!! What my mother doesn’t know is that I’m packing him up in the Focus and bringing him back with me tomorrow ;)

Would you believe it if I told you I got another 8 hours sleep last night? I know! Three nights in a row. That’s a record. I was awake after my usual 6 hours, but was actually able to fall back asleep when I tried to this time. Led to oversleeping, but I’ll take it! :D

Cool-down:
5 minutes stretching

Phew! I was going to tack on abs at the end, but this took me exactly one hour so I decided to call it a day.

Rushed back home and filled my hungry belly with a big bowl of savoury.

100_9567

Savoury oats! I was reeeally craving a bowl.

  • 1/2 cup rolled oats
  • 1 cup water
  • pinch salt
  • 1 tsp Earth Balance
  • 1 breakfast sausage, sliced and stirred into oats
  • 1 fried egg
  • lotsa saaaahlsa

100_9570

Runny eggs are a thing of beauty, right Sophia? ;)

100_9575

I know I harass you guys about this every time, but you really gotta try savoury oats if you haven’t yet!! The protein, fat, and fibre in this dish always holds me over forever. Close to five hours today, which is almost unheard of for me!

My 90-minute drive home was rather boring. I arrived home and my mother popped this wonderful taco dip in the oven for me.

100_9577

It’s a mix of lean ground beef, black beans, kidney beans, homemade salsa and cheese.

While it was heating I prepared this:

Which then turned into this:

100_9583

Hm. Looks gross there, but I know you’ll trust me when I say it was delicious ;)

Then I went searching for the Halloween stash. I knew it was somewhere! Found it hiding in the pantry closet.

100_9595

I went for the Reese’s pieces and savoured every little piece.

100_9585

I also arrived home to a house that smelled of turkey! My mom had one roasting in the oven all morning, and we were treated to it this evening.

100_9590

My mom forgot the cranberry sauce, so I put some plum sauce on it instead. We also had stir-fried veggies in a gravy made with soy sauce and mustard. It was delicious!!! And then I swiped a few french fries that were made for the kids.

And I maaaay have attacked the candy stash again for dessert.

100_9594

I like these little chocolate balls because I suck on them until they melt in my mouth. I actually suck on Reese’s pieces the same way too. Makes them last longer!

Now I’m just tucked in with my mom, Mark (her boyfriend, although that term is a little silly applied to their situation. Life partner? Common-law?) and the doggies. I’m just happy to be home and in their company. Tomorrow my mom and I are going to the gym together, then meeting my dad for lunch, visiting my Nana and then Costco!! Woot! See ya after!

Question of the day: What dishes does your mom always make? My mom is famous for her vegetarian chili. She also makes a mean hummus and vegepate :)

Things I Learned – October 2009

Another month, a whole new set of Things I Learned! If you’re curious, you can also check out what I learned in September and July. (apparently, August was void of any life lessons…)

October turned out to be a big month for me, I learned:

  • I am the only person who can make ME happy. In every sense of the phrase.
  • Sometimes, the small things no longer cut it, and it takes some big things to change that
  • Running out of coffee when you’re up at 4am really, really sucks
  • Gas station coffee will never cut it

100_9412100_9411

100_9413

  • Never buy cheap cheese, it’s not worth it.

100_9424

  • Sometimes the known is much scarier than the unknown
  • Home is wherever your family is. Whether it be immediate family, extended family, or a family of friends
  • There is no such thing as too many apples

100_9437

  • Size and weight do not dictate my happiness. Being thin may make life easier sometimes, but in no way does it make life perfect.
  • Daylight savings is awesome when the clocks go back and you work at 5am the next day.
  • Just because I can’t hand out candy to trick-or-treaters, doesn’t mean I can’t hand it out to myself.

100_9439

  • Goals are meant to be accomplished, no matter how lofty they may seem.
  • When my body speaks, I should to listen
  • Simply Bars have awesome nutritionals

100_9442

  • But the cocoa cacao with raspberry flavour just doesn’t do it for me.

100_9441

  • Nothing in my kitchen is off-limits. Sometimes, I just need to get my hands dirty and try out new dishes.
  • I really, really enjoy exercise classes
  • Candy corn is not at all the jujube candy I expected, but a sweet, creamy, addictive treat.

100_9447

  • I need to listen to my gut more often
  • Some days a little bit of living room yoga is enough
  • When I can’t be what I want to be doing, I can at least lose myself in one of my favourite books

100_9453

Happy Halloween everyone!!!!
