Same City, New Life

I’m back in Toronto!

My four day getaway to visit my sister in Ottawa turned into nearly 20 days involving a hospital stay, surgery, and manymany episodes of How I Met Your Mother.

I LOVE that show.

Anyways, I’m back in the big city now. Feels weird returning to this space after so much has changed. No jobs to go to. A shattered arm. Realizing all my belongings need to be packed up sooner rather than later.

My 4.5 hour train ride back went well. I had to take a crowded bus by myself which was stressful with two bags + one arm. I didn’t even bother with public transportation when I got in (which I love to hate) and immediately hopped in a cab to my apartment.

I did well finding my way around my sister’s one bedroom apartment while in Ottawa. Now I’m trying to adjust to being in my own apartment with my new situation. It’s weird. Really weird.

It is however nice to be with my roommies again. I missed them!

IMG_5870

Roommie Megan even saved me a couple of her Valentine’s Day brownies in the freezer. I forgot about them! I was as high as a kite on pain meds on Valentine’s Day. So they were a pleasant surprise ;) I believe she got the recipe here.

The roommie reunion continued last night, eating burritos and watching Exit Through The Gift Shop. Awesome film. Even better burrito.

From Chino Locos on Queen & Greenwood. Sort of like Mexican burritos, but with an Asian flare. I got the fish burrito with white baha fish, chow mein noodles, black beans, edamame, onions, peppers, tomatoes, sour cream, cheese, cilantro and chipotle sauce. The noodles were a million times better than rice in terms of texture and flavour. I got the mild and it was still pretty spicy. Good amount of fish too. Definitely the best burrito I’ve ever had!

It’s also weird being in Toronto and not having a gazillion jobs to go to. I’m used to rushing around all over the place. I don’t think I’ve gone more than a day without leaving my neighbourhood since moving here.

So I’ve been celebrating with unemployment pancakes. Pancakes become unemployment pancakes with the act of eating them for lunch. Preferably while wearing flannel pants and watching videos on YouTube.

Another thing I missed about Toronto was my wardrobe! I was in Ottawa for almost three weeks with only a weekend’s worth of clothing. A lot of which I couldn’t wear with the full arm cast.

IMG_5876

I’ve been reunited with this loose sweater my Aunt Heather gave me (hi!) that drapes perfectly over my cast. As well as my large collection of comfortable easy-to-pull-on workout attire. And yes, I wear leggings as pants. Deal with it.

I’m in Toronto until next Thursday when I travel to Ottawa to meet with my surgeon again. He’s not keen on transferring me to a Toronto doctor, nor am I keen on dealing with a surgeon who isn’t familiar with my specific case. Until then, I plan on crossing a few more items off my Toronto bucket list, relaxing in my own bed, and hanging out with my Toronto friends for the last time.

Yup. Just totally feels weird.

Late Nights in the Tee Dot

Welcome to the weekend!!

I’ve been a little MIA again, but with good reason :)

After last blogging on Thursday, I went out with my friends, proceeded to drink more than intended, and didn’t get home until 3am.

What should have been a shitty morning on Friday (thanks to my weak minded-ness when it comes to cheap draft beer) was quite the opposite.

I got a job offer!! At a gym :D

I have yet to accept as I still have a couple more interviews. But I’m pretty frickin’ happy that after only a week of being in this city, I potentially have a job :)

I’d had high hopes of making it to a spin class Friday morning. Hopes that were dashed somewhere around 1am Thursday night. Instead I got to celebrate my job offer with a new blogger friend!!

Morgan, from Life After Bagels is another Toronto-area blogger, but she can’t make it to the big meet-up I planned for this Sunday. A lunch date was clearly in order and she picked out a fabulous place called Utopia.

IMG_9418

Utopia is right next to Little Italy. I hadn’t been to that part of the city yet and it’s such a charming spot!! The restaurant is known for their burritos, so my decision was almost easy.

IMG_9416

They had so many fun burrito combos to choose from! I ended up with a Grilled Tuna Burrito: grilled yellow fin tuna, zucchini, onions, pesto, asiago cheese, lettuce, salsa.

IMG_9415
Delicious combo. The tuna was well cooked and pesto makes anything taste amazing. I had an awesome time chowing down on this while gabbing with Morgan. We started brainstorming about all the fun blogger meet-ups we can do in the future – I can’t wait!!

The burrito kept me full for a while, so when dinner rolled around, I kept it simple.

IMG_9422
I’d only ever found seasoned tempeh “burgers” in New Brunswick, so I was pretty excited when I noticed all the grocery stores here carry the plain regular stuff!

IMG_9426

I sliced it up and put it between toast with almond butter, bbq sauce and lettuce. I know it sounds like a weird combo, but the bbq and almond flavour pair perfectly with the nutty flavour of tempeh.

And here is why I didn’t have time to blog yesterday – immediately after dinner I went to my first ever major league baseball game!

IMG_9438
Toronto is home to Canada’s only MLB team, the Blue Jays. My now deceased Papa was their biggest fan, so I will always have a soft spot for them.

IMG_9434
It was also my first time in the Rogers Centre (aka Skydome). It was a beautiful night to be sitting in there!! We also had a great view of the CN Tower ;)

IMG_9435
Roommies!

IMG_9430

We ended up leaving after the 7th inning, as the Jays were getting completely embarrassed by the Red Sox.

IMG_9431

IMG_9437

*Sigh* at least we’ll always have the ‘92 & ‘93 seasons :P Good news for Kelly though!

IMG_9439

Somewhere around here I learned the term “street meat” and realized that watching baseball really does work up an appetite for hot dogs.

IMG_9440
So many delicious toppings to choose from, so dangerous because they’re going to fall all over the place anyways.

IMG_9443
Let’s see… there was ketchup, mustard, relish, sauerkraut and corn salsa. All on a whole wheat bun of course ;)

I decided early on I wasn’t going to get drunk drink a second night in a row. I had legitimate hopes of going to a morning spin class again.

IMG_9446
Those hopes were once again dashed somewhere around 1am when we went to a fabulous bar called Sin & Redemption with an extensive beer menu. Once I saw the Fruli Strawberry Wheat it was all over.

IMG_9444

Delicious. I had just one and it was worth every sip! I’m a wheat beer gal to begin with, and the sweet strawberry was perfect with it.

I also got to experience the madness of Queen St W at 2am on a Friday night. That in itself is an experience. We met an interesting fellow who gave us 20 bucks for no good reason – these Toronto people are so nice!! :P

And with that, I’m taking my sorry butt to the gym. No spin class today, but maybe some fun on the cardio machines. I will make it to that morning spin class someday. Mark my words.

Blogging About Bloggers

Hello friends! Are a lot of you going back to work on Monday? I’m still at my mom’s place, but I drive back on Monday. Boo. Although, if I stay here, I may run out of pants that button up ;)

Started the day out fabulously with a run at a new women’s only gym in town. I was there waiting when they opened the doors at 8am! After all the HIIT yesterday, I was feeling a long and slow run, so that’s what I did :)

On 1% incline:
0:00-5:00 – 3.5 mph
5:00-10:00 – 5.6 mph
10:00-15:00 – 5.8 mph
15:00-20:00 – 6.0 mph
20:00-25:00 – 5.8 mph
25:00-30:00 – 6.0 mph
30:00-35:00 – 6.2 mph
35:00-40:00 – 6.0 mph
40:00-45:00 – 6.2 mph
45:00-50:00 – 6.4 mph
50:00-55:00 – 6.2 mph
55:00-60:00 – 6.4 mph
60:00-65:00 – 6.6 mph
65:00-70:00 – 3.5 mph

Covered about 10k in this and loved the interval pattern. Except, I was out of the line of fire for the air conditioning and was a downright sweaty mess. Felt like I was running in July again!

Came home and gobbled up dessert breakfast.

IMG_1933

A random packet of organic cinnamon instant oats I found in my mother’s pantry, mixed with yogurt, topped with crumbled whole grain crusted apple pie and PB. This was awesome. Some desserts were just meant to be crumbled atop oats ;)

Then my mom, sister Jane and I actually went to church! It’s been almost ten years since we’ve been to the small Anglican church we basically grew up in. We were feeling very nostalgic being back there today. Now that I will have proper weekends at my new job, I hope to make it to church more often in Fredericton!

Lunch was almost a repeat of Christmas dinner.

IMG_1937

I got lazy and just reheated a few of the dishes. Sweet Potato, Goat Cheese & Parmesan Galette, Brussel Sprouts with Bacon & Figs, turkey (the dark meat!), Chunky Cranberry Apple Sauce and stuffing that I didn’t end up eating.

Chris showed up this afternoon to spend my last night here with me. We spent the afternoon scouring used book stores with Jane. For dinner we hit up my favourite restaurant in Moncton – Calactus! (which you can also read about here, here, here, and here – I eat there a lot!

IMG_1941
It’s a local vegetarian/vegan restaurant full of delicious, natural ingredients.

Except this time, we had special guests – Angela from Oh She Glows!

IMG_1949

And her husband Eric. Both are in town visiting Angela’s Dad for the holidays. We’re from the same hometown and even went to the same high school!! We were in different years though and don’t remember each other. Funny how the two of us would both end up as food bloggers!

Chris got his usual – The Big Marc Burger.

IMG_1943
With a side “caesar” salad and homefries.

I tried a new dish this time – the Burrito.

IMG_1945

Omg. Soooo good. It had black beans, broccoli and other various veggies, smothered in cheese of course ;) The best part was actually the chapati bread they wrapped it in. Loved it!

And let me just say that Angela is a downright sweetheart! Just as lovely, smart and gorgeous as she comes across on her blog! Her and Eric were awesome to hang out with. I’m such a dork, I love being able to talk about food, exercise and blogging with other people who get it!

IMG_1950

Angela also gave me two new Glo Bars to try, which I obviously can’t wait to dig into ;)

Chris and I skipped on dessert as my mother was assembling a trifle just as we were leaving. I was excited to come home and try it!

IMG_1955

My mother’s too funny. She apologized for not putting whipped cream on top because she thought it’d be ugly for the blog. Whipped cream + custard + cake + strawberries is delicious no matter how you serve it.

IMG_1961

Best way to end the day is the same way you started it – with dessert!!

I think it may turn into a low-key evening around these parts. Chris and I are hitting up a spin class together in the a.m, and heading back to Fredericton at some point before dark. Really wish I could just stay here forever, but I can’t afford the new wardrobe :P I’ve savoured every piece of food I’ve eaten these past few days, but it’s time to go back to the real world and do some damage control! Time to introduce green vegetables back into my life ;)

Question of the Day: What food do you always crave after a few days out of your regular eating routine? When I come home from vacation, I’m always most excited for oatmeal, apples, pitas and salad. Standard eats that just always make me feel goood.
