Fatty February Update!

I had a blast reading through everyone’s favourite alcoholic drinks! Glad to hear I’m not the only rye/whiskey girl. Many of you probably know that I’m not a huge drinker anymore. In fact, I consume alcohol maybe only once a month now? If even! I wrote about it in this post. I lost my taste and desire for it, but at the same time, I still need a big night out on the rare occasion :)

Monday was a pretty typical day for me. I was quite proud of myself for dragging my butt to the Monday morning spin class despite my whacky weekend. I pulled myself to the gym again today for some treadmill work and a full-body workout. Nothing suuuuper intense, but a solid sweat sesh nonetheless.

I feel like I should add that I’m still in the beginner stages of the pistol squat! Someday my leg will stick out perfectly in front of me and I’ll get my bum to the floor. But right now my foot just sort of dangles as I try to get my thigh parallel to the ground. It’s tough! I’ve got old-lady hips too, so my threshold for lower-body weightlifting is pretty darn low. My hips were popping and hurting by the time I got to the leg raises.

Today’s desk-breakfast was more cold goo.

Grape nuts and yogurt
Not overnight oats but Grape Nuts! I randomly picked up a box of Grape Nuts cereal because I’d never tried it before. I mixed it with yogurt, almond butter and blueberries. It made my breakfast almost cake-like in texture. I hear the cereal is good heated up, I’ll try that next :)

Morning snack was one of my new favourites, inspired by my mom!

Armstrong cheese
While my mom was visiting, she kept eating deli meat wrapped around cheese. Turns out it’s an awesome high-protein, high-fat snack. Today’s was smoked tofurkey slices around Armstrong herb & cheddar cheese.

Lunch was leftovers!

This is what I also had for supper on Monday. It was crazy good for being so crazy simple and made-up on the spot.

  • ground turkey
  • 1 can Heinz chili-spiced kidney beans
  • onions
  • mushrooms
  • sweet peppers
  • minced jalepeno
  • minced garlic
  • 2 tbsp garlic tomato paste
  • fresh green beans

I was so excited about my leftovers today, I forgot to pack an afternoon snack. I had to venture down to the university’s cafeteria where there were unusually slim pickings.

So God chocolate soy milk

They didn’t even have granola bars!! The chocolate soy milk was pretty good though, I haven’t had it in a while.

I’m also doing well on “operation-become-an-office-tea-drinker.”

Lipton chamomile tea

Today’s chamomile was also brought to me by the cafeteria. Not sure how I feel about these Lipton teas they offer. They never actually taste like what’s on the label.

I needed to clean the kitchen when I got home, which means a roasted dinner. Throw everything in the oven then clean while it cooks!

white turnip
I had tons of root veggies in my fridge to use up – white turnip and parsnip. I used to hate turnip growing up, but I loved it tonight!

And some pepper squash.

Spread with some real buttah ;)

And a giant chicken breast stuffed with Olive & Feta Hummus.

stuffed chicken

To stuff my chicken, I just slit it down the side and sandwich the good stuff in there :) Hummus and laughing cow are probably my favourite stuffings.

Evening snack was another one of my new favourites – protein cookie dough.

IMG_3921
Mixed up 30g chocolate whey protein powder and vanilla almond milk until it was a nice thick goo. Then I stirred in 2 tsp peanut butter, mini chocolate chips and sprinkles. Love this. It seems teeny tiny, but I assure you it’s filling – and that means a lot coming from me!

While licking on my protein batter, I finally cracked open this beast:

Oof. It’s been a while! I kinda stopped studying after my course was delayed by three months. Alas, the course date is fast approaching again (mid-March!) and I still have a lot to get through. Tonight, I learned all about muscular concepts. Lots of info.

Fatty February Update!

Seeing as its past the mid-month mark now, I want to do a quick Fatty February update! I was doing reallyreally well before my Halifax trip. Adding olive oil to things, eating fatty fish and having lots of nut butter. But it obviously all went out the window for a few days there :P Right now, I’m just trying to get back on track with it! These past couple days I’ve been relying on nut butter waaay too much – about 3-4 tbsp a day as my main fat sources. I haven’t tracked my food intake, but I know it’s not enough, and not a balanced way to get it. Making sure I get a wide variety of healthy fats is definitely going to be a continued effort on my part. I’m workin’ on it!

As for any noticeable difference – my belly pudge shrank. Seriously. I half-credit it to my cutting out carb-heavy snacks at night (been doing mostly protein snacks before bed). But I think upping my fat has balanced my macronutrients out to a ratio that is much kinder to my belly bloat.

I weighed myself this morning, and even after the mass consumption of high-calorie sugar foods this weekend, I’m back at my pre-Christmas “happy weight.” Again, I can’t fully credit this to upping my fats, but I think consciously choosing fattier foods has just led to a more balanced diet on my part. One that has helped me maintain my weight better.

So far so good! No noticeable difference with my skin and hair, but I swear my nails are growing faster.

Question of the Day: Fatty February-ers – how are you doing? Any noticeable changes? Any fatty foods you’re loving?

Girl’s Weekend

Hiiiii!!!!! Remember me?? I missed you guys!! A big thanks to Allison and Michelle to holding down fort while I was away. My bloggie break over the weekend was fab, but I’m definitely ready to start up again. My coworkers aren’t as into my food and workout rambles :P

Today will be a fun lil’ recap of my weekend away. I feel like I should prelude this by saying that I went all out this weekend. Sometimes a girl just needs to throw all her healthy living ambitions out the window and party like it’s 1999. So that’s what I did :D

I was lucky that a friend from work joined me for the 4.5 hour drive to Halifax. What would have been a very boring drive was a fun one! We chatted the whole time and listened to some good tunes. We arrived right before suppertime and I had a glorious reunion with bestie Erika.

Check out the view from where I was staying:

IMG_3848
Right next to the Halifax Commons! I would like to note that Nova Scotia has significantly less snow than New Brunswick. What’s the deal.

I also made friends with Erika’s cat, Griffin.

IMG_3838

Well, kinda. If biting my ankles is how he shows love.

Friday night was supposed to be our laid-back night. We made plans to meet up with a friend who was celebrating her birthday at a swanky bar. We stocked up Erika’s fridge appropriately. Beer and water is all you need, right?

IMG_3828

Alexander Keith’s beer, very Halifax appropriate I might add.

We also picked up a Dairy Queen ice cream cake to celebrate our belated birthdays together. I don’t even like ice cream that much!

IMG_3833
But I can’t turn down the cookies & fudge interior, and I love that gel icing.

The bestie and I got all dressed up for our night on the town!

IMG_3836

Don’t be fooled by the wine glass – it’s actually rye and water with extra ice. Just like my Papa drank. It’s the only alcohol I still enjoy drinking!

We did end up at the Taboo nightclub, which is a very classy joint. But I guess we had more party in us than we thought, because we ditched it for The Dome which is anything but classy!! It was there that we danced our booties off till the wee hours. Many more rye and waters were had, followed by a giant slice of pizza at 3am. Upon arriving back to Erika’s place we attacked the ice cream cake with spoons! Ooohh it was sooo baaad, but ohsogood.

We didn’t get to bed till 5am and needless to say, were dead the next day. We watched New Moon on the internet in bed, until we finally got up at 2pm to do the Booty Camp Fitness DVD. It was basically 30 minutes of squats and lunges, but hurt so good after such an indulgent night! We also hit up Pete’s Frootique for fresh fruit smoothies and Lululemon. I splurged on a $100 pair of black groove pants. I’ve tried them on three different occasions and finally took the plunge! Mostly because I keep buying cheap-o yoga pants that suck balls. I got fed up and wanted some quality goods that fit me well.

Saturday night ended up being an evening in since we were wrecked from Friday night’s shenanigans. It turned out to be awesome though because Erika found a working Nintendo in the garbage!!

IMG_3850

Nintendo as in NES, the original. Lots of Mario playing followed.

And, ugh, more ice cream cake.

IMG_3853

I’ve officially eaten enough ice cream cake to last me the next five birthdays.

Sunday morning, Erika and I got up and went to her apartment complex’s gym for a quick 30-minute cardio sesh. I sweat out more birthday cake. It felt good.

Then it was time for my Halifax blogger meet-up!!!

IMG_3867

Left to right: me, Angie, Katie, Renee, Jaime, Lynn and Melanie. Can I just say I love blogger meet-ups? It is so neat to meet up with people you’ve never met, and yet already have so much in common with! We blabbed for a long while before I even opened the menu!

IMG_3859
We chose The Wooden Monkey restaurant which features lots of organic, locally-grown ingredients.

IMG_3858
I went for the Lentil Burger: lentils, carrots, miso, garlic, onions, daikon, seeds and oats, lettuce, tomato on a fat-free 5-organic grain pita with a sweet honey mustard.

IMG_3860

Did you say pita? Yesplease!

IMG_3864
And an apple salad for the side. I do believe it was greens, green apple, walnuts, goat cheese and some vinaigrette for the dressing. The salad was awesome, as was the burger. My only complaint is that it was way too heavy on the mustard.

Thanks to all the Halifax ladies for coming out for a Valentine’s Day meet-up!! It was sososo nice to put faces and voices to the blogs I read, and get to know some non-bloggers alike. Also really fun to hang out with Maritime foodies!

I picked up my work buddy for the drive home, which also went by smoothly. We of course had to make a pit stop in Oxford, Nova Scotia – Canada’s blueberry capital.

IMG_3868

I don’t know why, but I am fascinated by giant monuments.

Upon arriving home, I decided to finish my sugar-filled weekend with a bang – more sugar!

IMG_3871

Jaime gave us all sugar cookies at lunch.

IMG_3874
I had a small piece of the red one, then went back for another piece, then devoured the whole thing! Jaime, it was delicious!!

But I’m officially on a sugar detox.

Until I eat that pink cookie ;)

Hope you all had a fabulous weekend full of lovely Valentine’s things, or Olympics watching, or just plain relaxing :)

Question of the Day: What’s your favourite alcoholic drink? Mine will always be rye!

‘F’ is for Balance

Hi! Susan here! Just had to pop in and tell you that today’s guest poster, Michelle is doing a “Self Love” month over on her blog, Eating Journey. Be sure to check it out to hear some of our favourite blogger’s thoughts on loving themselves :)

Okay…aaaand guest post commence.

—————————————————————————————————-

Thank you so much to Susan for letting me post on her blog. I remember finding her from Lara @ Thinspired and falling head over heels :)

How does a re-forming dieter/farm girl/American in Oz find balance?

One: Family

null

My family is my rock. They keep the sky from falling when it feels like it’s going to. They keep perspective on where I am going in life, where I am headed and who I am becoming.

I call my sister, mom, dad at least once a week. That’s sprinkled with Facebook and random text messages.

I know that some people may struggle to have their family in their lives in that way..but I look at family loosely and whatever makes that for you is what is most important.

Two: Fitness

I have recently wrote about ‘Getting Fit, Not Thin!’ and I know that fitness has been an evolving journey for me. I have ran a race.

null

I have completed a triathlon.

null

What fitness for many people is, is a punishment for over-eating. I am learning how to balance that out. I am focusing on fitness in my life as an added bonus to the healthy lifestyle choices that I make. Especially looking at fitness not as something I do because I am riddled with guilt, rather because it makes me feel amazing.

Three: Faith

null

I recognize that talking about ‘Faith’ is a scary thing in the blog world…well for the world in general. I am not going to go into a lecture of what you should and shouldn’t believe.

I am a Christian, however when I say Faith, it may encapsulate a particular religion per say, but even then you have to recognize that you are worthy of the love from what you believe in.

Faith is something that underpins many things in my quest to be balanced. It is my rock, it gives me the insight into knowing that I don’t have to be perfect.

More importantly is that Faith (in whatever form) has enabled me to grow and prosper in the Faith I have in MYSELF!

Four: FUN

null

Many times I can remember locking myself away at home because I had over-eaten, blew all my points for that day, or needed to workout.

If you’re not having FUN in life..then you’re not ‘sucking the marrow out of life’.

Let your hair down, smile at complete strangers, pretend that you’re the back-up girl to Jillian Michaels in the 30 Day Shred (ever smiled will working out..it works), sing with your I-Pod in.

LIVE!

null

I am not an expert..dear God…I am not. However, it’s all how you approach life. What you talk about, How you treat yourself and who you surround yourself with that enable you to find balance.

Do you have an ‘F’ word that keeps you balanced?

Any other letters?
