Boxer Day

Happy Boxing Day!!! For you American folk, boxing day is holiday here in Canada and many other parts of the world. Click on the link above to learn what it means, then come back and tell me, cause I still can’t figure it out! A day of recovery after Christmas dinner perhaps? :P

I slept for a glorious 8.5 hours last night – a rarity for me! A food coma for sure. I prepared a usual-sized breakfast for myself, ate part of it, and felt stuffed to the gills.

Smoked meat, swiss cheese, homemade relish, mustard on rye bread and some grapes that went uneaten. I had to wait a solid two hours after this before I could even think about going to the gym! So not like me!

Sister Sara wanted to join me for the workout. She’s a member of the YMCA, and my mom had a handy-dandy pass for me.

Did you know there’s special VIP change rooms at the YMCA? I didn’t!! It had a whirpool! Anyways, my sis said she wanted to do some upper body weights, so that’s what we did!

Warm-up:
20 minutes on the elliptical w/ 10 min high intensity intervals

A1 – One-arm dumbbell snatch:
3 sets @ 20 lbs x 8

B1 – Romanian deadlift to bent-over row:
3 sets @ 55 lbs x 8

B2 – Dumbbell fly:
3 sets @ 15 lbs x 8

C1 – Assisted pull-ups:
3 sets @ 70 lbs x 8

C2 – Cable tricep pulldown:
3 sets @ 30 lbs x 8

Plank: 90 sec
Side plank: 30 sec each side
Swiss ball roll out: 12 reps
Prone jackknifes: 12 reps

HIIT:
15 minutes in treadmill, 2 min recovery, 1 minute sprints

T’was an awesome workout! I typically work out alone, so it was nice having a buddy :)

My hunger returned with a vengeance after the workout. Thankfully, there was leftover lasagna to be had.

Then it was off to my dad’s place!

IMG_1890

They just got a new puppy – a boxer/bull mastiff mix. I was a little apprehensive, especially when we were greeted by this GIANT kennel in the entrance!

IMG_1882

But the puppy is harmless. Ohmygoodness, the most docile and shy dog I’ve ever met. No beastly doggie to be found.

It was a wonderful afternoon hanging out with my dad and step-family #2. We noshed on many sweets, fruit, and maple smoked salmon.

And showed off all the gadgets we got for Christmas.

The cat meanwhile, snoozed behind the tree. Typical :P Oh, you guys may apreciate this: their cat’s names are Peanut Butter and Cashew ;)

Then it was back to my mom’s place for even more food!

IMG_1919
Leftovers. Reheated Sweet Potato, Goat Cheese & Parmesan Galette, Brussel Sprouts, Bacon & Figs, Carrots & Turnip and then whole grain baguette that I ate with laughing cow cheese, turkey and Chunky Apple Cranberry Sauce. Um yeah. It was good.

Eaten with my two boys by my side…

IMG_1925

Bah! I miss having pets around!

Then I cuddled up with the fam and watched movie about, you guessed it, food!

IMG_1927

I liked it, it was cute :) I also randomly want to debone a duck now.

I gotta say, today I really noticed the difference exercise has on my appetite. I didn’t workout yesterday and basically ate a big breakfast and big supper and was completely satisfied the whole day (when I usually eat 5-6 times a day). When I woke up this morning, I couldn’t stomach my usual sized breakfast. After 90 minutes at the gym, it’s as if those big meals never happened. I got hangry!! And have been all day! Exercise also gets rid of that lingering grossness I have after big meals sometimes. Funny how that works. Another +1 for a solid sweat sesh in the morning! ;)

Question of the Day: What’s the number one reason why you workout? I’m addicted to endorphins. Some of it is vanity for me, but nothing beats the way I feel both during and after. It’s incomparable to anything else!

  1. Peanut butter and cashew! I love it! I just love pets, period.

The Y I used to go to had a separate changing area with a steam shower that you could upgrade to for an extra $10 a month. I was too cheap for that LOL! I do miss the Y a little, though.

I exercise because I love how I feel afterwards. I’m a bit addicted to it. Also because I can eat more, to be honest.

  2. That movie was great!!

  3. I have always looked at working out as something I HAVE to do if I want to lose weight. I am trying to shake that mentality.

  4. great workout!! i need to watch that movie..your dog is SOO cute! :)

  5. So many cute pets in this post- I must stop squealing now. yes I squeal at cute animals on the screen!

Exercise- used to be a “must do” and now usually it’s a pleasure/endorphin rush/feeling of accomplishment, as well as knowing that I really can’t maintain a significant weight loss without it! :-)

    Happy Boxing Day!

    D

  6. I workout because it makes me FEEL GOOD. I don’t workout so I can eat more.

Also, my family AND my husband’s family has those same white plates with green/white flowers! :)

  7. Great question! The #1 reason I work out is for mental health/sanity. If i don’t work out I get depressed, it’s harder to sleep, etc. I work out to maintain my weight loss and for overall health, but mostly because it’s the best stress-reliever, anti-anxiety and anti-depression medicine I know!

Happy Boxing Day! I wish we had it in the Sates…it’s just fun to say! Makes me want to punch something :-)

  8. Looks like a fabulous christmas was had, all that glorious food and fun!

The main reason I exercise is the way it makes me feel, I love it plus the side effects are a bonus! x

  9. All your food looks delicious.

I am going to watch Julie and Julia this week so I’m glad you liked it :)

I usually work out alone too but I have really been getting into having a buddy lately. It’s just a little bit more fun!

  10. Great post, and love the lasagna pics (still looks amazing!)!
And what great family holiday pics! And two houses to go to, wow, busy girl! 8.5 hrs of sleep, niiiiice!

#1 reason i work out would be that i crave it which is intertwined w/ addcited to the endorphins Id imagine and that it keeps me healthy, young, and fresh. Use it or lose it is my mentality!

    xoxo

  11. Ohhhh I always thought “boxing” referred to the sport hah. It’s weird- exercise has the exact opposite effect on my appetite. On days I run, I can eat 3 meals and be satisfied. But on rest days, I’m a hangry beast.
I think someone would be lying if they said that vanity has absolutely nothing to do with why they exercise. I mainly run because I love the endorphins. It also does wonders for my immune system. I can’t remember the last time I was sick.

  12. I do not understand Boxing Day at all. In the UK it’s when all the sales start- utter madness. Strangely, in Scotland all the stores are open, but in England, a lot of things are closed (Christmas Day, EVERTHING is closed). Such cute names for the cats!!!!! Odd about hunger- I completely lose my appetite the days I work out and am way hungrier on rest days. I read not long ago on a blog that rest days are when your muscles repair/build so appetite is often higher.

#1 reason I workout…stress relief! Also partly a boredom thing to be honest. My 6-8 mile walks kill a lot of time!

  13. My brother and his gf live in London and have told me all about Boxing day but i didn’t realize it was celebrated in Canada too. That looks like an awesome workout- thanks for posting those in such detail!

I workout for several reasons- it makes me feel good and clean, and I feel like my body is active and alive on days when I workout. Also, I can definitely eat more, my self esteem is higher and I just feel like I am doing a good thing for myself.

I guess that is a lot of reasons :)

  14. I exercise for a lot of reasons.. vanity, endorphins, I always feel “clean” afterwards, it’s fun, and it’s a great stress relief!

It seems like I’m way hungrier on my rest days! Or I’ll be full and then bam! My hunger is in full force! It’s so strange!

  15. The number one reason I workout, if I am to be 100% honest …….. is FEAR! I know there is not a chance in heck that I can maintain my recent weight loss if I don’t! And there is no way I EVER want to go back to living in the body I was living in before. Another less dramatic reason is, I’ve actually gotten to the point where I enjoy it and it has become a habit. :)

    • I totally agree! There is no way I could have maintained my weight loss without it either. Not just because of the calories burned, but exercising just sets me up to make better choices for the rest of the day :)

  16. I love the way exercise makes me feel mentally and physically.
I also notice that it makes me way hungry and actually when I am trying to lose weight I find I do much better with less intense/less exercise. Weight loss really is 99% about what you eat and I just can’t be in enough of a deficit due to hunger when I workout a lot. But I agree it is very necessary for maintenance.

  17. I think boxing day being a day to recover makes perfect sense. We should do that in the US too, though.

I’ve not been good about exercising regularly the past couple of months, and I have noticed that regardless of what I eat, I’m not losing a pound. That’s definite motivation to get back to exercise.

  18. i work out for my mental sanity. for real, i just don’t feel quite right when i don’t. which is why after a week of not working out, i started small with yoga today :) off to maybe spin tomorrow?

yay for christmas fun with family! looks like you had a good time, and i hope you are enjoying the rest of your vacay. happy boxing day!

  19. looks like a lot of fun, and great food! i work out to help fight off depression and keep my cholesterol in check.

  20. julie and julia for the FOOD annndddd BLOGGING!

    Still loving your picturess..

And number 1 reason I workout? To rev my metabolism! And the way it makes me feel. But I think it goes hand in hand.

  21. AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH! BOXER! that dog just made me die and go to heaven!! you know i am dog obsessed. maple smoked salmon sounds incredible. love the kitty names :) and the reason i workout? the “natural high” i feel afterward. seriously. i love the results.
