Maid for hire

Anyone out there have green thumbs?

100_7533

I have a ledge that runs around my apartment, and I thought this window spot would be perfect for plants! Except, I kill everything. Seriously, I killed a cactus last year. Anyways, this is an aloe vera and some funky cactus that I have no idea how to take care of. How often do I water them? I’d like to put some herbs here too…

Moving on to the more important things at hand. I had a chocolate macaroon breakfast cookie when I got to work.

100_7492

I normally don’t photograph it, but my breakfast cookie ritual always includes a hot coffee (I drink it black).

100_7502

Coffee is needed when you’re at the office at 5 am!!

100_7498

It just warms my sleep-deprived soul :)

It was a sloooow long-weekend news day. I came prepared though.

100_7514

Reading material and a liverwurst sandwich with onion and mushrooms. So good!

There was also some bar snackage, a peanut caramel crisp Myoplex Lite.

100_7504 100_7506

I like the peanuts on top! I find chocolate chips always fall off and melt on my clothing without my knowing. It’s no cinnamon flavour, but it was still pretty darn good ;)

I snacked and decompressed a little once I got home.

I got a particularly runny jar of PB, perfect for drizzling. That thing on the left is a wasa cracker with raspberry jam and PB.

Once digested I hit up the gym for a little cardio/weights. The people at my new gym are so different than those at my old campus gym. At the university gym, it was mostly people who play on sports teams, girls working off the previous night’s vodka coolers, skinny guys trying to bulk up for said girls, and professors. New gym is almost all fit people. The girls are super hardcore, and the guys are all beefed up. The people who go to the classes are more “normal” I suppose. But it’s definitely a different vibe, not as laid back, but it should at least be motivating :)

I made another fabulous dinner tonight!

My own version of a lentil bulgur salad.

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup dry lentils
  • 1 cup dry bulgur
  • 1/2 pint cherry tomatoes
  • 1 tomato, chopped
  • 1/2 onion, chopped
  • 1/2 green pepper, choped
  • 1 garlic clove, minced
  • 1/4 cup feta cheese
  • 1/4 cup fresh basil
  • 2 tbsp lemon juice
  • 1 tsp olive oil

I cooked the lentils and bulgur together, let it chill in the fridge for a while, then stirred in the rest of the ingredients.

I ate 1 1/2 cups of it on top of some massaged kale.

And homemade pita chips on the side with baba ghanoush. Pita chips are so easy to make. I just cut up a pita, sprayed some olive oil on it with a little barbecue seasoning at baked at 350 F for maybe 5 minutes.

And dessert!

After hearing Jenna rave about this chocolate for so long, I had to try it! It did not disappoint…

100_7547

I love how I was complaining about salty food yesterday, then bought salty chocolate today :P There is only one time when salty is acceptable – when it’s paired with sweet!! :D

Unfortunately, putting two plants on the ledge has been the only work I’ve done on my apartment today. I’ll probably get a little done before bed, but today has not been as productive as yesterday. In order to keep on top of my household duties, I’ve designated cleaning days on my Google Calendar.

100_7513

For example, Sundays will be a laundry day paired with cleaning my closet. Then Mondays will be my vacuum day, etc. This way I can’t procrastinate and it’ll get done! Hopefully it will save me time in the long run as well. My strategy before has always been to let everything get messy then spend my days off cleaning it :P

Question of the day: How to you schedule household chores? (if at all) Feel free to chime in on the plant question too :)

Okee, I’m off to do that closet ;) One more morning shift tomorrow then it’s my “weekend,” yay!! Enjoy your labour day!

  1. I’m a plant killer too! I just forget to water them. Have you ever had a bamboo plant? Those are pretty hard to kill (at least if I remember correctly).

Major props for drinking your coffee black! I want to get to that stage one of these days – I’m tired of spending money on Stevia! Your new gym’s atmosphere sounds up my alley! I hated when I’d go to the gym and girls would be talking while running/biking – they’re not working hard enough ;)

    • K – It helps if you buy high quality coffee! :P I usually have to add milk or sweetener to cheaper coffees because they’re too bitter for me. But a good medium-dark roast brewed well is sweet enough on its own :)

  2. Brown thumb here too! I can’t keep any plants alive to save my life. I either over water or under water, with the result always being the same – dead.

I love your cleaning planner. Even if you never do it all, it’s always so nice to see it all organized and neat!

  3. My husband has the green thumb in our household, so I can’t offer suggestions there. Although I did have an awesome herb garden a few years ago. I keep planning to start another.

As for a cleaning schedule… I just put it off until the weekend and then try to force myself to do it when I’m not too exhausted. I haven’t managed to get around to any this weekend yet… good thing there’s still tomorrow!

I keep saying that I want to allocate one day a week for a chore so that it doesn’t accumulate… but I keep procrastinating. I’m terrible with housework. Quite odd, since I used to be the opposite!

  4. I need to find that Lindt – I love sweet and salty! Funny, that picture of you and your coffee is just how I feel about it :D

Aloe plants and your other one are succulents. They key with them is to not over water. I would suggest a bigger pot for the aloe. Use a sandy soil to help with drainage, and let the plants dry out between watering. You can tell if you over water succulents because the leaves become soft and mushy. They are desert plants, after all! These also need lots of sun. You can fertilize a few times a year with plant spikes if you want. Makes them nice and green. Hope that helps!

Oh, and for organizing chores – I like flylady, net She has things organized to clean different areas of the house during different weeks of the month.

  5. I’m also terrified of plants! Haha, well, I’m terrified of taking care of plants. My mom is such a gardener and wants to get me all these plants for my apartment. Right now I have a little bamboo thing and a cacti arrangement–and I’m always scared they’re gonna die on me. Lori sounds like she knows what she’s talking about, though!

Your dinner looks amazing! And how do you make your events different colors in google calendar? It looks so cool! Mine are just one color :/

    • Hey Anne! Click on “create” under the “my calendars” tab on the left hand side. I have calendars for each activity (like workouts, work, etc) and you can choose their colours from there.

  6. dude, i cant keep plants alive either. haha. what, no workout detail today?! i always love those, you give me ideas :D i agree about the peanut bar, it is no cinnamon but still good. my least fave is the choc choc chip one. i wonder how you will like it. i am digging that bulgur creation. never made bulgur… may have to experiment. i am about as good as cleaning house as i am at keeping plants alive! fail. xo

  7. You say “labour” my way…that makes me happy.
I do not have any sophisticated cleaning program such as scheduling…I just vaguely try to stay on top of it!

Mmmm coffee. So good and so necessary for early work mornings! And salty chocolate? Sounds phenom.

  8. I am terrible with plants :(

I don’t have a schedule for cleaning- since moving, I’ve been cleaning pretty much daily. Am sure the novelty will wear off :P

My day doesn’t start without coffee!

  9. I save the bigger chores liked bathroom cleaning for my days off work. But, I multi-task with other things. I vacuem while Snuffy is eating dinner in her high chair or she gets out her toy vacuem and “helps”, I do laundry every night, I unload and reload the dishwasher while I cook, I am actually teaching Snuffy to dust with a swiffer, she thinks it’s fun and once she gets the hang of it, I won’t have to do it anymore!

  10. Wish I could help you out with the plants but I can’t keep anything alive either :(
I feel the same wa about coffee! I have recently switched to black after ditching Splenda. It’s been a few weeks and I am FINALLY getting used to it. I still prefer it pimped out with Splenda and CoffeeMate, though ;)

  11. Oh goodness..I really wish I could help with the plant thing, but…urm…i’m the same exact way! I kill everything, it’s awful! haha

Salted chocolate? That sounds wonderful! I always top my dark chocolate with salted peanut butter, because I love the sweet/salty combo. I had no idea that you could buy dark chocolate pre-salted. Mmm… :D

Oh, and thanks for letting me know about cashew butter and dates. I’ve yet to try cashew butter, but it sounds wonderful, so I think that will be my next monetary “splurge” when I go to trader joes. :D Thanks!

  12. April (Foods of April)

    Whoa that salad looks delicious!

And I must say that cracker looks beautiful with that peanut butter drizzled all over it.. mmm!

  13. That breakfast cookie looks tasty! :)

I don’t organize household shores. I’ll be honest, I’m not the best housekeeper. I usually do a once a week overhaul, everything at once, and then fight with my husband the rest of the week over who is doing dishes/vacuuming. LOL

  14. i NEED to find that chocolate…in fact, i just got back from Target where i scoured the racks for it, haha!

i love the looks of that bulgar salad me lady. unfortunately, i can’t help you on the green thumb thang. i gots nothing!

  15. So impressed with your cleaning schedule- I don’t do that, but i should. Do you REALLY clean your closet every week? I clean mine once or twice a year when half of it goes to GoodWill! And as luck would have it, in full irony, TODAY is that day. Can you tell that I’m procrastinating?

Oh, and the cactus/aloe? I, too have a black thumb. I killed a bunch of cacti about a month ago, but Lowes took them back- yay! :-D

Thanks for visiting my blog today!

  16. Christina Guthrie

I am finally going to try the lentil blugar salad tonight. Let you know what I think!!
