Flashback Friday

Happy Flashback Friday!! I’m taking part in Janetha’s little thang this week where every Friday you show some old pics for giggles. My pictures aren’t that old, but still fun to look back on!

You can’t really tell, but they’re a nice deep blue colour. My hair is still wet from the shower here. Blow dryer = frizzy disaster.

 

Even though I went to bed late last night, I was still up at 6:30 this morning. Ugh! Went for a small-ish breakfast to prep for my long run.

I spent too long fooling around on the internet though, and when I was ready to go a couple hours later, I was hungry again. So I had a few prunes.

Then I was off!! Seeing as I was sleep deprived and still had more physical activity in store for today, I took it easy. Except, I still ended up going pretty fast!

It was pretty cool out this morning, very fall-like. My heart rate was lower than usual, not sure if it’s related to the temp. But I felt really relaxed the whole time and not like I was huffing and puffing like some of my more recent runs. I did intervals again of 9 minutes running followed by 1 minute walking. Oh, and yes, this is a new distance record for me… again ;)

Came home and rolled the eff out of my calves because they’ve been screaming at me lately (no idea why, my body is an enigma). Then made a lovely smoothie.

Chickpea pizza!

  • 1 pita pocket
  • 1/8 cup cottage cheese
  • spinach
  • 1/2 cup chickpeas (maybe more)
  • garlic, dried oregano, ground cumin, pepper
  • mozzarella

This was majorly YUM. Pretty sure you can put anything on pita bread, melt cheese on it, and it will be awesome :P

After lunch, I called my landlady to check if buddy was going to be out of my new place by tomorrow, when my mover’s come. She said she still didn’t know. So I got his number from her and just called him myself.

Turns out he’s in Nova Scotia this weekend, and won’t be back until late Sunday. Problem is, I can’t re-book the movers for Sunday. And I have to be out of my current apartment Sunday at midnight.

My new landlord says we can store my stuff in the empty apartment next door until buddy moves out. But it’s looking like he won’t be out of there until Monday.

So, I have movers taking my crap Saturday, moving it to this apartment next door until Monday, at which point I have to move it all into my new place when buddy finally vacates.

I called my mother, hysterical, because I had no one to help me move my big items on Monday, nor do I have a place to stay Sunday night. Thankfully, my mommy was able to help me sort things out. She will pay for a hotel room Sunday night. Saturday night, I will just have to sleep on the floor of my current apartment, which will be completely empty by then. Then, she and my sister are coming to visit on Monday to help me do the final move, and Chris will be back from work that same night.

Holy crap. Kudos to you if you could keep up with all of that. Honestly, I think what frustrates me the most about this whole situation is that my new landlady just does not get it. English isn’t her first language, so maybe something is getting lost in translation, but she doesn’t really think it’s a big deal. I also have to work at 5 am both Saturday and Sunday, so I am going to be seriously sleep deprived going through all of this. As if I want to sleep on the floor of my empty apartment, only to get up at 4 in the morning to work. So, so not cool.

Anyways, that’s my rant. I’m puffy eyed again. But at least I never lose my appetite…

Another strange combo. Soft fried eggs on toast with 1/4 of a butternut squash dressed in Earth Balance spread, brown sugar and cinnamon. Surprisingly, the sweet squash went really well with the toast!

 

That’s all for today, I still have toooons to do to get ready for the movers. I’m praying work is slow tomorrow, and that I at least get some sleep tonight. Three more days…

Question of the day: What are some of the strangest food combos you’ve ever had??

I still think candied sweet potatoes are super weird. Marshmallows belong in my cocoa, not my vegetables! :P

Found a new second home!

Hiii! Well, I am feeling much better today. After nine straight days of work, I finally had a whole day off to get my act together. I’ve been very productive so far!

  • Picked up my new glasses and got my contacts checked and okay-ed
  • Took a tour of a gym and signed up!!
  • Set up my utilities and a new credit card
  • Ordered a new adapter for my computer
  • PACKED. A lot. Got a good chunk of my bedroom done.

What’s left:

  • Find out if I can actually move in on Saturday!
  • Pack up the kitchen and living room

I’m happy with that for now :) I’m most excited for my new gym!!! I signed up with GoodLife Fitness, which is a Canadian chain. There are two locations in my city – a large co-ed one, and a smaller women’s-only one. I went to the co-ed one. The real selling points for me were 1) no sign-up or time limits on cardio equipment, 2) opens early in the morning, 3) a variety of group fitness classes held throughout the day, 4) a feeling of community. A woman dropped off a box of fudge for everyone while I was there, love it!

Most of the classes are Les Mills programs.They’re pre-choreographed classes used across the globe. Being a music snob, this worries me a little, but I’m also excited to try something that’s been so successful! You better believe I’ll be aaalll over those morning RPM (spin) and evening Bodyflow (yoga) classes. The schedule is different at the women’s only location, so I’ll have that to choose from too!

I signed up for a year membership, and they’ll take $23 out of my account bi-weekly. This is a new expense for me, because my campus gym was free. I got to thinking about it, and I spend around $10 a week on packaged bars. If I cut that expense out, then it will pay for my gym membership. So expect to see some homemade bar concoctions soon. Feel free to share your recipes!

Well, I’m off to finish packing up my bedroom. Since my cable’s been cut off, I’ve been listening to old Jillian Michaels podcasts. A little dated, but I’m still learning lots! She mentioned the cold water boosting your metabolism thing too.

While I traded in exercise for packing today, I’m reeeeally looking forward to my long run tomorrow. It will be the first time since I started running again that I won’t have to rush off to work after. I won’t even have to set an alarm! That my friends, is luxury :)

Cardio therapy

Thank you, thank you, thank you for your kind words on my last post!!! I almost didn’t post last night because I didn’t want to be a Debbie Downer. I want this to be a fun, sometimes informative blog, but I also want it to be real. Everyone breaks down sometimes, and I think it’s perfectly okay to do so!

Jenna put it really well, “most of the time when I do [cry], it’s out of frustration not sadness.”

Totally. There’s been a lot of frustration happening ‘round these parts!

But, I’m a firm believer that life is what you make of it. We’re all in charge of our own happiness. So today, I woke up with the goal of making it a better day.

And what’s a better way to start an awesome day than to skip on over to the gym?

That’s a total lie. I stumbled, puffy-eyed, sleep-deprived, and for some reason, really hungry. But once I got into it, I really got into it :)

This was basically a workout for someone with ADD :P I loved mixing up the strength and cardio instead of just splitting it into two parts. Good times at the campus gym. I’ll miss that place…

Hello gorgeous! Two waffles with almond butter, yogurt, a sliced peach and cinnamon. Eaten on a paper plate because my real ones are in a box. Also eaten in bed because my table is gone.

I also want to mention that I tried making my daily iced coffee with cold water overnight. Usually, I brew iced coffee in the french press by pouring boiling water over the grinds, steeping for 4-5 minutes, pressing, then leaving it in the fridge overnight. But after reading Kath’s post where she used cold water, I wanted to give it a try, figuring it would save me the step of boiling water. It was a no-go. I let the cold water steep with the grinds in the fridge for 8 hours and it was much weaker. Some things I read said to soak it for at least 12 hours. But I like my coffee strong!!

I cut myself off from buying groceries this week so I wouldn’t be moving a bunch of food. I did however stock up on a few bars to replace the usual fruit I bring to work. Bad, I know. But they’re easier to pack than fresh fruit,

I should know better than to buy products called Slim Down, but this one intrigued me (and was on sale). It has 13g of protein for 180 calories. Unfortunately, I didn’t get a picture of the bar itself, because I ate it while walking somewhere (no time for a sit down snack, busy work day!). First off, I didn’t read the ingredients carefully enough in the store, and didn’t realize it had high fructose corn syrup. Secondly, the taste was “meh.” Kinda chalky. I still have this bar in another flavour to eat, but I otherwise won’t be buying them again.

 

I was staaaarving when I walked in the door at 4:30 pm and decided to just go ahead and make something to eat. Given the grocery and dishes situation, it was still pretty decent!

Soup! I forgot that I still had a few containers of this stuff in my cupboard.

I added a can of tuna and a couple spoonfuls of garbanzos to “beef” it up a bit. Not too shabby. Couldn’t even distinguish between the chicken and tuna!

Dessert was the last of my protein popsicles.

There will be more experimenting with this when I’m in my new place. Just think of the possibilities!

 

So I wouldn’t say I’m 100% a-okay yet. But I’m definitely 50% better than yesterday. After working nine days straight, I have these next two days completely off to prepare for moving this weekend (which I still have to work). Having some spare hours to myself should help a lot.

So today’s question is, what did you do for yourself today that made you happy? My gym session was definitely my highlight. I really realized how much I rely on exercise now to release my stress and anxiety. Much better than the full-blown panic attacks I used to have.

Oh, and I woke up this morning to discover my cable’s been shut off! Not cool! How am I going to watch the Real World tonight!? :P
