Someone call the wah-bulance

This morning, I woke up with a mission. Beat the heat. It’s going to be HOT around here for the next few days, so outdoor activity will have to be scheduled accordingly.

When my body clock woke me up at 6:30 am, I jumped (okay, stumbled, stepped on a random object, and tripped) out of bed, threw on my running clothes and immediately fuelled up.

Iced coffee with almond milk and stevia in an iced beer mug I bought in Jamaica. Noticing the trend yet? :P

Then I strapped on all my gadgets and was off for my planned five kilometres. Not gonna lie, I was (am) sore as hell from weight lifting yesterday. Pounding out a fast 5k so soon after may not have been in my best interest.

Kinda nice to see that 8 in the pace, even if just barely! I think I started out at maybe a 10:00 and got increasingly faster towards the end. I was surprised by how easy it was to squeeze out a faster speed for those last 2 km. Running really is mental. The only thing holding me back was me thinking that going faster would be too hard. Well, it was hard (when is running ever easy?), but it was bearable and most importantly – fun!

By the bye, I’ve been measuring my runs with the Nike + iPod foot pod and plug-in I bought a while back. I had some difficulties getting it calibrated at first, but now it works great! No complaints thus far :)

I’ve been a hungry beast all day. I don’t know what is up with my body. Getting sick maybe? I’ve been more hungry than usual and I find my body is taking longer to recover between workouts. I don’t like it.

Some other eats from the day included a peach + AB break while preparing my apartment to be shown.

I won’t bother posting the ingredients. Just picture what’s in a KitKat with a bunch whey, soy and egg white protein. 

It was melty… did I mention it’s HOT here?

It was actually pretty good, for a protein KitKat. The peanut butter was creamy, and the chocolate coating was decent. Not the greatest snack idea on a day when I’m starving though. Wafers = not filling!

Also had a little fat + fibre in hopes of satisfying my belly.

Wasa fibre rye with PB, lexia raisins and cinnamon. Made the hunger situation better, but not cured.

Spent the afternoon out and about. Picked up some new chain lube for my bike and a sweet new running bra from the Running Room.

I contemplated doing actual clothes shopping, but the idea of spending my money on workout gear appealed to me more! I can’t wait to try out this bra. It’s got a built-in heart rate sensors.

Apparently you just clip the transmitter on in the front. I’m sceptical it will actually work. Regardless, it’s still a really nice bra without it.

I also stopped by an Asian grocery that I discovered hidden in our city’s industrial park on my last bike ride. It was huge!!! I was hoping to find some of the coveted kabocha squash, but they don’t carry fresh produce. I did however leave with a few goodies.

Black sesame seeds, rice paper and agar-agar. I have ideas for the seeds and rice paper, but I have no clue what to do with the agar-agar! Any ideas??

I had an early supper, because I was hungry again.

Tempeh burger with microwaved sweet potato chips. My apartment is going to be an oven-free zone for the next few days. Seems like our weather only goes in extremes – cold and rainy or scorching hot!

For the record, this is not everything I ate today. There was a breakfast and more snacks in there. I just noticed I talked about being hungry, but looking at the pictures, it doesn’t look like I ate a lot. I did though!

I’m hoping to go for a hill bike ride tomorrow, but if my body doesn’t snap out of whatever is ailing it, I may just skip it. Which sucks, because it’s going to be a rain-free day off for me tomorrow, so it’s perfect for a bike ride! Of course, after tomorrow, it’s going to rain until Sunday, ugh ugh.

Yes, I know, I can hear the wah-bulance from here :P

In case you can’t tell, I’m having a “blah” day. Hopefully tomorrow is better! For the time being, I’m going to go lay in bed, nurse my current tummy ache, and watch Fast Food Nation. I just downloaded legally purchased it and am excited to watch it! I read the book in high school, but I can hardly remember it now. Much of high school is a haze for me :P

How about I end this lame post with a couple more random Q’s. What is one movie you really want to see but haven’t yet? What is one movie you think everyone should see?

Okay, this is totally self-serving, because I think y’all probably have great movie recommendations for me!

A-ing a few Q’s

Hello folks!! First, I want to say y’all made me feel better about my messiness :) Unfortunately, you tidy people have not inspired me. I still have tons of cleaning to do and I’m putting it off till the morning! The person is coming at 3pm to look at my apartment. So hopefully I can squeeze in a run, a quick trip to work, and removing the contents of my closet from my floor before then.

I’ve gotten a few good Q’s in the comments lately that I figured I should probably just answer in a post. I always try to be as brief as possible (I swear!) in my posts as not to drone on too much. As a result, I also have a tendency to leave out a few key things from time to time!

Both Lori and Janetha asked about when I’m moving . My lease at my current place is up Aug. 31, and the one at my new place starts Sept. 1. So some time around there! It all depends on when the current tenant in the new place moves out. I’m thinking one of those last days in August.

I’ve lived in my current apartment just over two years now with the awesomest roommie ever. We’ve been besties since the age of 6, so it’s really been like living with family. We both graduated from university this spring and are doing our own thing. She’s moving away for more schooling, and I’m staying put to work at my job. She’s actually been gone since the start of the summer working a summer job in our hometown. So I’m essentially already living by myself. I really like it and can’t wait to be in a spot to call my own!

Sophia asked, “Do you prefer biking to running?” Can I say I like both? :P There are things I both love and dislike about each. Biking is much easier on the muscles and joints. It’s also faster and a lot more fun sometimes. Running however is easier in the sense that it requires less equipment. It’s more simple to throw on my running shoes and head out the door than it is to get all my bike crap together. I also have to carry my bike up and down four flights of stairs, which consequently may be the cause of the chain marks on my legs.

Anywho, as for which is physically harder – running. But biking up a hill or in the wind is way harder than doing either on foot. So both can be equally challenging!

Janetha asked, “Do you miss swimming?” I haven’t swum since my triathlon three weeks ago. At first, I didn’t miss it at all. I was sick of having to adhere to the lap swim schedule, as it’s pretty hard to fit into my own schedule. There’s also only 5 student parking spaces at the pool, which was a GIANT pain in the butt. But now I’m kind of missing it! I’ve been doing such intense activity lately, I kind of miss my low intensity pool sessions.

My free pool use is up when my student ID expires in September, so I’m going to try harder to get in more pool time before that happens. It’s going to be hard though, because I already have myself on a “schedule.”

After finishing the triathlon, I made three goals for myself. Increase my bike mileage to 100k by the end of the season, run a 10k in September and start heavy weight lifting more regularly to regain my lost strength. Right now I’m trying, and almost failing, to get in two bike rides, two runs, and two weight sessions in a week. So that leaves little pool time!

Okay, okay. That was a lot of text. Hope that answers your questions! If there’s something I’m leaving out just let me know! I usually try to answer questions in the comments or through e-mail. But if they’re relevant, I’ll start including them in my posts :)

Now, the real question is, did I really eat a jar of nut butter for breakfast?

I’ve been eating a lot of nut butter lately. My body must be needing the fat or something. At this rate, I should be having another one of these next week. My only beef about the oats-in-a-jar is that it’s really hot to the touch!

I forgot to make iced coffee last night, so I broke out into a sweat drinking a hot coffee after this. So much for skipping a morning workout :P

I tried out another braeburn apple while hanging out in the news cruiser.

This one was much better! Perfect amount of crunch and sweetness. I really like round apples for some reason. The core was also quite soft, I actually ate some of it!

I was running suuuuuper late this morning and had 6 minutes to pack a lunch. Hence, my half-assed smoked salmon wrap.

Just some sliced cucumber and laughing cow in there. It was missing my usual plethora of veggies. Luckily, I packed some on the side.

I had a Luna bar in the afternoon, but still had half a PB & honey sandwich before leaving work and heading to the gym.

It was pretty dinky, but helped keep my tummy from wanting dinner while I worked out.

The gym was the busiest I’ve seen it all summer. The weight room was full of basketball players who think they’re mega tuff. Made me kind of miss the goofy hockey players that are usually there…

Warm-up:
15 minutes on rowing machine

A1 – Front squat/push press:
3 sets @ 35 lbs x 8

B1 – Static lunge w/ rear foot elevated:
3 sets @ 10 lbs ea x 8 ea

B2 – Incline push-up:
3 sets @ 30 degrees x 8

C1 – Plank:
3 sets @ 60 sec

C2 – Prone cobra:
3 sets @ 90 sec

D1 – Side plank:
3 sets @ 30 sec ea

HIIT:
15 minutes on elliptical. 1 minute sprints on level 8, 2 minutes recovery on level 3.

Phew!! Not going to bother posting my heart rate or calorie burn for this session, as I’m trying to not get hung up on the calorie burns for my lifting sessions. The heart rate is good to know for resting in between sets, and knowing when I need to push myself harder during HIIT, but I don’t want it influencing what I do too much! Who cares if it was 115 doing planks? My whole body was shaking!

Had a protein cocktail when I came home.

Ever notice that my shakes are always in booze glasses? They’re the only big ones I have! This is a PVL peach whey cooler in a hurricane glass.

Supper was a repeat from yesterday. I wasn’t even going to photograph it, but I’m pretty sure it gets the award for least photogenic.

Burrito stuffing: 1/2 cup Eden Organic Caribbean rice & beans, 1 scrambled egg, onions, mushrooms, 1 laughing cow cheese wedge.

It at least looked a little nicer on the plate.

Trust me, it was delicious!! As far as food goes, the ugliest is always the tastiest ;)

Okee, I’m completely wiped again. I’m on another “weekend,” but I want to be up early to go for a quick 3 mile run, run some work errands and clean my cluttered apartment!!

Sticking with yesterday’s cleaning theme: What’s your favourite room to clean? Least favourite?

Surprisingly, my favourite is the bathroom. Least favourite is my bedroom. I loathe putting things on hangers :P

Tour de Fredericton – Partie Deux

Thank you sooooo much for all the positive feedback on yesterday’s post! I don’t know why I was so nervous about posting that picture and talking about it. I guess I didn’t want to look like I was “showcasing” my weight loss in a “look at me” kind of way. But I have the awesomest readers ever, and you all understood the meaning behind the rambles :)

For the record, my blogging uniform isn’t as nice.

I think I deserve to be lounging around in an oversized tee after my 4:30 am wake-up and crazy long bike ride today. Wanna hear about it?

Peanut butter PowerBar. Kinda like a bar-shaped cookie! One of the best things about these bars is that the first ingredient is “whole oats.” Can’t go wrong with that, especially in a “protein bar.”

I was excited as this was my first braeburn experience. But I think I got a bad one, because there were some brown mushy spots inside even though it looked bruise-free. Good thing I’ve got more!

I then rushed home to watch the last 10k of the Tour de France. It was so exciting!! Cavendish (on his Scottie) whipped out in the last 1k and took his sixth stage. He may have lost the green jersey, but it was still pretty sweet :)

Then there was a little food porn to get me ready for my bike ride.

Cinnamon raisin bagel, 1/2 a smooshed banana, 1 tbsp almond butter. Sweet jebus, this was good.

I was thisclose to putting off my long bike ride for this week. But in the end, I liked the idea of spending my afternoon on a “leisurely” bike ride :)

Duration: 2 hour and 24 minutes
Distance: 55 km (34 miles)
Avg Speed: 23 km/hr (14 mph)
Max Speed: 40 km/hr (25 mph)

The first 30 minutes seemed to drag on, but I eventually got into a groove. I ate four dates with PB at the 90-minute mark. It was perfect! My energy was starting to wane a little, but it was just enough to carry me through that last hour. I just wish I didn’t have to pee after the first 20k :( By the end of the ride I didn’t want to get off!! However, my crotch, neck, wrists and bladder would not have been impressed with that.

Next week – 60 km!!

I’m putting my morning workout off tomorrow until after work so my body has a proper 24 hours to recover from the bike ride. While it wasn’t overly taxing, it was still a significant amount of activity.

I had lots of time to think of what I was going to make for my recovery shake.

  • 2 scoops Vega Smoothie Infusion
  • 1 cup unsweetened vanilla almond breeze
  • 6 ice cubes
  • 1/2 a banana
  • 1/2 tbsp almond butter
  • 2 scoops plain yogurt
  • handful frozen papaya chunks

The papaya chunks were added after I tried it and felt the texture was off. They make it so much smoooother!

After stretching, rolling and showering, I got started on another awesome homemade burrito.

This burrito contained 1/2 cup Eden Organic Caribbean rice & beans, 1 scrambled egg, onions, mushrooms and a laughing cow cheese wedge (cause they make everything taste better).

Don’t worry, I also had my “congratulatory piece of chocolate” for my bike ride ;)

Eeek! My landlord just stopped by and said they’re showing my apartment on Tuesday!!! I’m going to have to whip this place into shape! Oh my gosh, I don’t know if that’s possible. There are some closets that need some serious cleaning, and a floor that hasn’t been vacuumed in weeks because my vacuum cleaner is broken (a certain boyfriend told me not to fix it myself because he can do it, I have yet to see these “skillz”)

Random Question: Are you a tidy person??

This may or may not be obvious, but I’m really messy. I have this tendency to not notice when things are lying around or in the way…
